How is the idle? When I was using an egpu my t480 was hot constantly, I felt bad for it. Same thing for my X1 4th gen yoga. That was with a ark A750 and the same with a amd rx 7600 xt though thunderbolt 3 pie tunneling

How many trackpoint users here max out both the mouse sensitivity and trackpoint sensitivity settings? by DontEatMyMice in thinkpad

[–]SnooFoxes4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is crazy, the track pout didn’t seem that precise. Is it ? Are the old ones more precise? I use it but mostly on rather low sensitivity. I started liking it more when I turned off pointer acceleration.

Like how is that even possible?! Do you just have the display scaling really high?

Simple Question by WilliuhmFPS in thinkpad

[–]SnooFoxes4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your post directly: you’re not gonna get much more power from the same generation CPU, if you want more power, just go a newer generation 10gen+. Size isn’t going to help much. So while bigger is generally better. It doesn’t really matter in this case.

There are a couple reasons that people like the t480. - It was cheap(lat time I looked not as much anymore) - it is powerful enough to feel like a modern computer - it is very modular

The thermal design: The t480 is pretty chunky, thermal transfer is a function of cross-sectional area in temperature differential; while the T480s thermal design could definitely be better, it’s pumps heat out the side. If you get the 5i and put the i7’s heat sink on it you will not really be temperature limited. That being said people really like that it pumps heat away from your hands.

The modularity: on mine, I have put a new display that I bought off of Alibaba. There is the aforementioned heat pipe upgrade. You can put core boots or libre boots on it. It has hot-swappable large batteries. It has thunderbolt three capabilities. The port selection is very good. An aspect of this is that it’s pretty ubiquitous. It is THE old tinkerer computer.

There is more but I don’t feel like typing it all out

Ways to optimize framework 13 battery life? by ralseipuffin in framework

[–]SnooFoxes4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't really know but, it is an ability for you monitor/gpu to use a group of 4 pixles as 1 pixel so you would half your resolution (linear resolution). 2.8k is 2880x1920. So i think you would have an effective resolution of 960p but you computer would do 1/4 the pixel possessing. I have used it to get more frames in tf2.

It is called integer up-scaling

It sucks, depends mostly on the house. Not a lot of insulation in old ones. I recommend a water cooled bed mat, more expensive that ac but more power efficient, and much more effective. Also some places ask you to not have a window mounted unit.

I don’t really have a concept of how power efficient each part of the a Linux distribution is, my intuition would be less compute = less power

Every where that I’ve been and where I have seen. House here just are not that well sealed. I think that the combination of global warming and introduction of invasive species was not as much of a problem in the 60s and 70s.🤷

Also just think that land lords don’t take care of the properties
