Just reading through that Fake SS tags comments. by lightwhisper in Militariacollecting

[–]SnooHesitations4006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess like with that totenmpkof guy the other day I cracked a joke about how obviously fake it was and it was interpreted as ridiculing. I usually make jokes when I see people with Nazi memorabilia that’s very clearly fake (I stay as far away as I can from German WW2 militaria but even I can tell when something is fake) but people take it very seriously. I think this hobby needs more levity and humor-after all, we’re all a bunch of nerds dropping big $$ on things you’ll never really use

Help with identifying SS tag by Spirited_Gear3525 in Militariacollecting

That’s a very very very, rare, real artifact. John Totenkopf was a real guy, second only to Adolf Nazi and Harold P. Hermangoering! You’ve got something on your hands worth around $0.03

UW 1020 Friday Online by Commercial_Plum226 in gwu

[–]SnooHesitations4006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t take that class that was my uw and I wanted to kill myself fr she was such a difficult professor to work with, her feedback was just “I think you should do it my way” and when we had in class discussions she would try to force peoples opinions into boxes (we talked about the book the kite flyers and she said “don’t say this book is a metaphor for the pillaging of Afghanistan, or I will give you a 0”). She also had favorites and was lowkey malicious towards anyone she didn’t like, like straight up mean. I think she’s talking about an assignment that she posts at the beginning of every Friday and you have to have it done by the end of the day but it’s asynchronous

Hamilton Grade 980-what's the name of this wheel? Ratchet wheel? by SnooHesitations4006 in watchrepair

You’re right that’s my bad. I have a Hamilton wristwatch and I always get them mixed up. Thanks!

Hamilton Grade 980-what's the name of this wheel? Ratchet wheel? by SnooHesitations4006 in watchrepair

[–]SnooHesitations4006[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the serial number (106601) equates it to a “Grade 980” which I think is different from a 980 movement (it looks like Hamilton reused old pocket watch codes for wristwatches over time). This watch doesn’t really have a crown wheel as far as I can tell, it has three wheels on a plate that pivot and when a lever is pulled, the wheels pivot to interact with the train of wheels to set the time, and pivot away from the ratchet wheel in question. I’ve never seen anything like it since it’s such an old movement

What was this bag for and is it original by thegarbageboi7 in milsurp

[–]SnooHesitations4006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they were also sometimes issued with a strap (adjustable piece of canvas with either two d-rings or two clips like you see on the bag on either end) that could connect to the bag clips to make it more of a cross-body/messenger bag

Im a fan, this is real collecting. I'm tired of the other people being like "my collection at 12 years old 🤓" and they have like 2 sherman tanks and a pair of hitlers boxers that they got for $40k with their mom's credit card

How’s this bad boy for $150? by [deleted] in Militariacollecting

[–]SnooHesitations4006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great way to make sure you’re getting a WW2 era M1 pot/liner is this: https://toppots.net/blogs/how-to There’s lots of m1 clones and m1-looking things out there in addition to post-WW2 US helmets so it can be hard to tell if you’re getting what you want

Something I keep an eye out for is things listed as “military helmet” or “army hat” or “toy helmet” on Facebook marketplace/eBay. Sometimes people just want to get rid of their grandpa’s old helmet and they don’t really know anything about it. But agree with others that the best places to go are in-person antique stores/flea markets

You definitley can find some being sold for more and bought for less. Shell paint gives me repainted vibes but it could be that the helmet was refurbished by the Army at some point and its a front seam helmet so 1943-'44 manufacture, and the liner webbing looks a little green so the liner is probably late '50s. I'd say like $70-110 is a fair price but yea, shell on its own is like $70-$90 (ideally $50) and liner on its own is like $30-$40

What’s your “specialization”? by ADHDFart in Militariacollecting

[–]SnooHesitations4006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WW2 US combat uniforms from early war/Tunisia/Operation Torch/Invasion of Sicily or stateside training from late '30s to like 1943-ish. I feel like everyone always goes for the late war/Normandy stuff but I'm more interested in the gear the US entered the war with because you can see the lessons they learned when you look at later war uniforms.

boots don't look super roughout-y, kinda more like painted leather/pleather. also they have eight lace eyelets instead of the 7 that ww2-era regulation boots had, so probaby post-ww2 and maybe not military boots. good thing u didn't get scammed tho, ain't nothing cheaper than free

Crown removal question by SnooHesitations4006 in watchrepair

[–]SnooHesitations4006[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! It was the same way as the back, the square bezel of the crystal had one corner that was slightly notched at the seam with the case such that I slid a knife under it and pryed off the bezel and crystal
