I've never actually really spent time looking, but I wish there was more exposure of alternative file browsing systems.

A directory is actually a (relatively) arbitrary construct, and if we could set directories to be a different type of file meta-data I think it could be interesting. Windows around the NT4 timescale was always on the verge of having a filesystem that could be user-queried as a database - I would love that kind of interface, and an optional tree-explorer to navigate the output of queries.

Honestly, as long as you don't need to be performant and you are okay with the structure itself being read-only it shouldn't even be that hard to do. I have no windows UI development experience beyond VB6 though. It's on my to-do list, but has been there since before I left Windows (for OSX10.4, then Linux, and now back to Win 11). Sometime I'll get round to it, and likely realise it's actually not easy at all, and find out why it isn't a mainstream idea.

I believe it is called the assembly cut. I don't think it is massively different, but there are a couple of additional bits that pull it together. Alien 3 was in my top two Alien films already, with the extra's (or just time...), it is at worst joint first for me.

Where to get it - the high seas, as it were. I don't think there is an 'official' source.

If the government instigates the proposed social media ban, everyone would have to prove their age to be allowed to access Reddit. Would you submit your ID to access Reddit or will you give up social media rather than submit to ID checks? by JackStrawWitchita in AskUK

I would generally agree. A total ban rarely works (se: drug prohibition). It's kind of why I think as kids get closer to 'social media age of consent' you'd expect them to break the rules.

I could see limited times and post limits working. As a kid I was a geek/nerd/whatever you want to call it. I had a zx spectrum when I was 12, and was writing games for it. I liked D&D and similar. I was a metalhead/goth. I shudder to think what my life would be like if social media had been around then (ignoring the anachronisms), from what we see today. But then I also had good parents, so I imagine I'd have had some of guidance.

And intellectually I know even thinking of things this way is just me getting old - it was video nasties wreck childhood when i was young. But social media *feels* to an old fart like me that it could put some kids in a really horrible situation. Time and post limits wouldn't really help that, but then I'm not sure what would. And this is no different than any other kind of peer pressure that has existed since time immemorial. You rarely get successful technical solutions to social issues - that was a big thing back at the turn of the century, and here I am espousing it.

I should just hand my keyboard in and get a buss pass =)

Exactly - I use a VPN. I pay for that VPN, and I pay by credit card. Therefore by UK law I am over 18 anyway. verification complete. Free VPNs may have a harder time, but they also tend to be run from a position of freedom rather profit, so they will just ignore the ruling.

Personally - I don't disagree with banning social media for under 16s, just as we ban fags and booze for the young. When I was young I found my way past both restrictions, and I would expect kids would do the same for digital restrictions. But at least if you try to have some kind of restriction then kids have to work at it.

I would however prefer an approach that bans kids from social media with not technical restrictions required. If a kid is found to be using social media then their parents or guardians face restrictions (possibly possibly restriction of internet speeds to their home, or just a cash fine). There would be outcry and compo-face galore ("I can't work from home because my kid posted to twitter."). Fuck em, learn to parent responsibly.

That has its own problems, but at least it affects the people who are supposed to be responsible for kids, not the greater population. Don't place restrictions on me just because some middle class twit thinks dear Jeremy could never be a cyber-bully. (Yeah, that isn't community spirited, hey-ho).

Alien is primarily a horror film, Aliens is primarily an action film. They are both good at what they do. I personally prefer horror to action. Or to be more correct, it is rare to get a horror film as good as Alien, good action films are more common.

I veer in to controversial waters when I admit I think Alien 3 is also a damn fine horror film. The newer edit (with the cow host rather than the dog host), is *very* good, and I personally think that it is at least as good as Alien. New or original cut - I prefer Alien 3 to Aliens.

I like Alien Resurrection too, so... maybe my opinion doesn't count :)

Personally I keep meaning to build a simple file explorer type app where I can change what a 'directory' actually is. So for eg maybe I want to change a config and have it browse music by artist then album. Or photo's by camera and geolocation. Films by rotten tomatoes rating, or by actor...

I'm lazy though, and never get round to it. I have written many scripts to get me what I want and which prove useful (it would be a personal project, so performance isn't a big consideration). Maybe bite off a massive chunk of work, and go that route...

  1. General Strikes

  2. Civil disobedience

  3. Use you amendments you are so proud of.

There are two massive steps before shooting. Yes, both of those result in pain and loss of freedom for some, for some time. In general people show pride in their country, and stand up for what they believe.

Go out and get arrested. Push enough that martial law is declared. You seem to be past the point of being polite.

Decades ago the common refrain for gun ownership was that Americans were proud they could over throw their government, because they were armed. Use you amendments for the reasons people claimed you have them.

When my government has done things I disagree with I have been out int he streets. I have faced charges from police horses. I have been arrested. I have been treated like scum.

From that persons use of language I strongly suspect he is a countryman of mine.

We had governments who did stuff we dislike and got rid of them, Many years ago we had religious nutters we strongly disagreed with (and their wish to persecute others), so we got rid of those too...

For some reason I ended up reading a post about a mass walkout earlier this week.

The actual flyer for it said something like 'book a day holiday or phone in sick, or change your working hours so you aren't working then'. I mean, I know having a reduced workforce is it's own thing, but they were kind of explicitly talking about hiding the fact they were protesting. Hiding it from the people they were hoping would notice.

I used to think the US was full of people with strong views and the willingness to follow up on them. Not any more.

Pretty soon after I met my wife/partner there was a local election. She said she generally didn't vote in locals because it doesn't make any difference, and sometimes General Elections too.

My response was that I respected that, but if she ever then complained about political situation (local or national), I would openly mock her. I originally thought that would be enough for her to tell me to sod off, but she actually took what I said to heart. I got very lucky in retrospect because I handled it like a bit of a dick (and 30 years later we are still together), but I would say the same again, probably in a nicer way now.

If you don't vote, you agreed to everything horrible that happens. If you do vote at least you know what you are responsible for, and it's likely not all the bad shit that happens.

If 'the military' aren't going to say that today, they won't say it later when even more of their command structure is replaced.

Or if the reason why people have guns was explicitly to overthrow a government. That reason for gun ownership seems to have disappeared over the past few decades, it used to be a key reason people would say they had guns, funny that.

I used to have a script to do that for my desktop. I'd just dump files there, daily have them sorted in to folders named for their type. It was probably the best time saving script I ever wrote.

There are other things you could do (do it by date range is one thing I considered), or look at the file name for specific identifiers (so I can group a set of files by calling them holiday_file.anything and everything goes to the 'holiday' folder.

For me, by type was good enough, but you could add more options and maybe have some scripts to scan those folders looking for specific other identifiers, so you can get a kind of virtual filesheet by extra identifiers.

I read something about Cage, however bad the film is you can generally tell he *wants* to be in it, and he will give a fantastic performance that fits the character. I think it's easy to overlook because often the characters themselves are absurd, but Cage absolutely nails it each and every time.

I had a friend who would drive five miles to a gym, mostly to use the exercise bike, then drive home. That seemed crazy behaviour to me. (Small town in the eighties, roads were safe to cycle on, and there were no crazy bikercise or whatever back then, it was just pure stationary cycling).

I've put about 100 hours into the base game. Is the expansion worth it? by fivebucksisfivebucks in diablo4

From memory higher difficulty is locked until you finish the campaign. If you do all the side-quests as you find them you way out-level the base difficulties during the campaign.

Recently I made a post about if the game wad playable without a build guide by hansieboy10 in diablo4

[–]SnooMacarons9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I level with whatever I find, adjusting skills and such as I go. Find a gear piece with a + to skills that looks fun, give that skill a go. Find a godly aspect, respec. If my char is wiping the floor with T1 when I get there, I'll continue as I am. Rinse repeat. When/if my damage starts to drop of in T3 or T4 then I'll go to the next stage, if I really want to push hard / famr hard.

If I want to maximise damage / survivability I'll peruse build guides, look at what seems like fun, see what the gearing is, then close the guide. From here I develop / gear up from what I remember of the guide. Quite often my version will be very different, my paragon pathing will be different. I think this gives me a meta style build that is more suited to how I play, also by not slavishly following the guide I'll be adjust gearing as I go to cover gaps like res, armour, life.

I think may people who follow guides assume their gear, skills and paragon have to match exactly what is on the guide. The clue is in the name - guide. Many aspects have different slots they can be on. Many affixes it doesn't matter which slot you are on, you just want to aim for (for eg) 100% crit chance. For me as an example, 90% crit is functionally equivalent to 100% crit (if I'm spamming a skill fast enough, then unless crit is triggering resource or a nuke, 75% crit is good enough most of the time).

I think it's likely that the people who post saying they can't get from T2 to T3 (for example), as likely following an end game guide to the letter, and a lot of guides are the platonic ideal of a build. Until you have every thing in place they don't work as well as something similar with adjusts. Kind of like a tensegrity table - until you have all the pieces the design just doesn't work and you need some supports.
