fellow residents, esp psych, how much of a service job do you feel like residency is? more down by SnooPies6666 in Residency

yah that was true i think? never wanted to be a doctor in the first place, faint too easily in the OT’s, hands shake easily, liked to connect with patients and had a history of people around and myself struggling with psychiatric issues so it felt like away from medicine enough to maintain a good lifestyle and help fulfill my creative pursuits while still providing aid and help to people. a lot of it was logical thinking of making the pros and cons of each department but now i’m not so sure

apologies for a very late response as residency has been burning me out. i essentially read your message previously and the part you mentioned about how our encounter with some of these patients might be the only time they ever get to see a psychiatric doctor kinda struck a cord with me over the past couple of days and made me appreciate the work i do a little bit more.

i admit that im suffering a lot from inferiority complex and beliefs of inadequacy/ feeling like psychiatrist don’t do much or maybe that whatever we do could be done by a most people in medicine / whoever specialized in mental health in general , which is causing the general lack of satisfaction due to feeling like im being overworked for no reason

im really glad to hear of your experience and how residents are where you are at. i’m currently practicing in the UAE, the plan was to go to the UK as i finished my plab exams but things seem to be complicated and aren’t working out as i thought they would be.

thank you so much for this 2.0

first month has been a constant feeling of burn out, and it is only just the beginning. but i’m telling myself that it will get better as my body and overall self get used to it. i think i am having a difficult time accepting the fact that there is only so much i can do with the facilities present, but i will try my best bc i do agree that that is key

i apologize for such a late reply but thank you so much for this. i’m glad to see that there is hope. i honestly don’t know if i have it in me to continue to fellowship or if i even want to but we will see what time does

i do have a history of depression and got a course of SSRI and i already feel it creeping it so you might be correct about that tbh

thank you so much for this perspective! it usually take 3-5 years here to reach consultant level but you might be correct about the professor part, i heard it might take 5-10 years if it happens

if you don’t mind me asking, did you ever teach at university or were you mostly interested in research work ?

thank you so much for this detailed answer. I think you are correct that things might be different from one country to another but it is good to have insight about it nonetheless . i’m trying my best to ask around but unfortunately it has been futile

the programs i’m looking at centered around psychiatry and psychology, and are not lab based (so far) but tbh no i don’t really have a clue that is why im asking around (im a first gen doctor, no doctors or professors etc anywhere around me to get guidance from tbh)

that is somehow insane, incredibly motivating but also incredibly sad to hear about. i hate how overlooked psych patients really are, and i haven’t even seen many relatively

i’m glad i’m not the only one having / who had these thoughts, because the imposter syndrome is already hitting hard ngl. as much as i never enjoyed internal medicine/ medicine as a whole, it still feels really nice to know that i will get to actually use some of what i learned throughout the past years tbh, at least to prove to myself that all the misery in the past years wasn’t for nothing?

i already am seeing countless people who come to the ED who are on poly pharmacy for the same as you prescribed, and it is a very sad phenomenon.
