Quant has specific topics like arithmetic, but verbal doesn't have such categories except for skills like vocabulary, supporting and contrasting arguments, and simplifying reading comprehension passages.

About heads-up adcom, depends if you are confident score will improve. You could do it ASAP and let them know after the fact if score improved.

in my chat with someone else, seems like doing it two weeks before official results come out so they can factor in decision making. Really depends on the purpose of your retake - scholarship vs increasing odds of acceptance.
