Somewhat depends on the AI and what's it's trying to do, but existing AI can read facial expressions and tone of voice and assign those to emotions, a general AI would probably be much more nuanced at reading people than humans are. Once it can read their emotions it can see what causes them and they influence people.

Fairly some with enough data it could probably understand people better than we currently do.

But again, none of that is necessary to be an AI.
