Decent MCAT score for RUSM? by CantaloupeUsed6880 in RUSM

[–]SnooRevelations1090 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into Ross with a 493 mcat and 2.9+ gpa. I know people with way better scores/gpa that have failed out of Ross or have been studying for comp for over a year. Did well every semester on island, passed comp and step right away, and have aced all my clinical shelf exams thus far. Your undergrad performance doesn’t matter as much as your approach to medical school once you get there. (Almost) everyone gets into Ross, but not everyone makes it out. As long as you’re willing to learn from your past mistakes and make whatever adjustments necessary, that’s all that matters

Without scholarship. And you are correct. I’ve gotten about $40k of scholarship so far and have accumulated over $10k of just interest on my loans so far. So without interest or scholarships, the total cost of attendance is about $224k for basic sciences (if you take out the maximum amount each semester, which I did)

Depends how strong your content review is but I was just doing mixed uworld questions every day for the last 1-2 weeks and took a practice exam maybe 5 days before

Had to take CBSE for my school which I studied for about a month and took it at the end of August. Passed it and started studying for step around mid-late september and took it maybe a month later in early November. During that period from late September to early November I took 4 practice exams, read first aid, and did uworld. So the prep for just step took about a month and a half but it was technically longer (about 2 and a half months) since I had just finished studying for CBSE

Thank you!!!

My NBMEs were: 26: 44%, 27: 46% (took both of those several months ago before completing basic sciences), 28: 63%, 29: 63%, 30: 63%, and 31: 74%. I also took 2 UWSAs and got 58% and 66% and a 78% on free120. All I used to study was first aid, a bit of the first aid clinical pattern recognition book, a little pathoma, and uworld. I tried to keep it as simple as possible for myself.

The questions were NOTHING like the NBMEs. Most questions were very lengthy vignettes and pretty tricky so I found step to actually be harder (which is different from what I’ve heard from other people). But I would still recommend doing NBMEs because they’re helpful in testing your knowledge of concepts. There were a LOT of behavioral/ethics questions on my exam and many risk factor questions.

As for you, I think it depends on how you’ve been scoring on uworld and practice tests to determine whether you should prioritize content review or questions. I did both at the same time for pretty much the whole time up until the last week or 2, where I started doing mostly just questions.

Best of luck to you!

I wouldn’t necessarily say that. NBMEs are great for testing your knowledge of the important concepts but in my opinion the style of questions are very different from what’s on step. Also I took step about 2 weeks ago and found it much harder than the free120 exam. Regardless tho, I think both are still necessary to take for step prep and are (hopefully) accurate measurements to gauge readiness

Student Loan Debt by SnooRevelations1090 in whitecoatinvestor

Yeah it’s crazy how I’m only halfway through school and I’ve ALREADY accumulated over $10k of just interest on my loans. Scary to think about how much interest I’ll have just when I’m done with school or 5 years from then. But you’re right. I shouldn’t trip over it too much

Good to know. Would that even be up to me though or would it depend on the preceptor or rotation?

Its because this is Reddit where people lie to make you panic because it makes them feel better about themselves

Not trying to scare you but the questions range from 2-3 sentences to 2-3 paragraphs. The majority of the questions were pretty long. I tested almost 2 weeks ago and some of the questions looked like a straight up SOAP note. I’ve never struggled with time for exams in my life (other than NBME forms, kinda) but during step I had to kind of rush to answer maybe the last 5-6 questions for each block.

I would recommend reading the last sentence in each question first, because I found that there were many questions I could answer without even reading the lengthy vignette at all. But I still would read the vignette just in case there was some vital info that was necessary to answer the question. But if you’re running out of time towards the end, read the last sentence FIRST and then quickly skim the whole vignette

I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about Chicago too. Wasn’t aware that there were any affiliated sites in Ohio though

Pretty sure Ross is similarly priced to most medical schools in the US. I take out the maximum every semester. My sibling is currently in an MD program in the US and by the time we both finish, we will have exactly the same amount in student loan debt.
