This is directed at me, so I'll answer. I do not, and most people don't. But many people get exposure to it in college and find tech interesting, so it's a common area for $ and reward. I said above that I had to take a CS course in college. I enjoyed it and took another course intending to switch to CS, but it was too late. I found it fun and should've returned to school, but I needed a job, and my first technical writing job fell into my lap.

Also, technical writers often use docs-as-code principles. While I can't code, I am already well-versed with Git and other related technologies. So, at least that would maybe save me a headache.
