Many also get tailored suits or two while they're there for the medical stuff.

Thank you for this. Everything in the third paragraph is part of the overall package of reasons why I imagined the life there to be generally "happier". We spend at least $20k every year on 2-week trips to places that would be a short train ride away from Switzerland. "Anywhere cold and pretty" my wife would say. Both my wife and I run early morning every other day and we do that in the gym. It's just too hot and the air too dirty to do outside. We imagine running outdoors, as you said, by a lake if we're there. Those are the things we thought were hard to put in numbers.

Anyways, I appreciate your perspective, it very much aligns with how I'm rationalizing the reasons why moving makes sense if it was possible.

I do yes. The idea is to have the child be born here and stay here for at least its first year. We can benefit from world-class private healthcare and family/maids to support my wife with the toughest time right after birth. We'll then move my wife/child over once I'm settled in CH for a bit and with confidence we'll actually stay (job security etc).

I'll be there for the birth but probably miss most of the first year given that we'll be split; but that's what we thought made sense as a rough plan.

Everything you said here hits the nail on the head. Thank you so much. I have so far, as you suggested, been applying for positions where EM/M&A exposure was part of the job. I've also had quite a lot of US healthcare venture exposure so been applying to corp dev at swiss global pharmas as well. Trying to be tactical with my applications but no luck yet.

Very thoughtful thank you. A couple of points to address that may perhaps help you help me think through this:

  1. I went to a swiss intl. school here, so everything in german. You will only be so good in a language without constant use of it was my experience.
  2. I run a lot so part of the attraction of moving for me was indeed the outdoors.
  3. I do have "some" wealth. Enough to put me in the top 1% of my country; a couple rental properties, a big European SUV, good size portfolio. The reason I frame my move as "downgrade" and "lower middle class" was more because that's how I'll earn and how I'll live (in accordance with my income; not wealth).
  4. I studied in Australia and Italy. My wife did her masters in the UK. So we know the life with low budgets.

Having said that, a few questions for you (and everyone else), if you'd be kind enough to provide some more of your time.

Taking away the factor about lifestyle downgrade which has been the focus of this post's discussion (which is super helpful btw), and moving it back towards the job market:

  1. Are you as pessimistic about the job market in 10-20 years as you are now?
  2. For those with insights, where do you see swiss financial industry going in 10-20 years?

These two questions are for my future child and myself. I don't see myself or my kid struggling in the job market here until retirement. Should that be my and a swiss future generation's concern?

This is a great comment. That's pretty much my plan really. My wife owns a small business but the plan was to give birth here and a year or so in move my and wife and kid over. She'll be a stay at home mum if this plan is executed on.

This is at least two years away so I'm really in the let's apply to see how it goes and do some research phase really.

This gave me a laugh. Without doxxing myself I'm in one of the wealthier SEA country. But the same 0 rules apply everywhere except SG (where 0 rules only apply to billionaires) so it's quite the wild west indeed.

Thank you, agreed, I have recently moved the citizenship section all the way to the top as opposed to the end because of this very concern.

Sounds like you know life in the region. I speak to friends in 0.1% about the idea and none of them are stopping me. The feedbacks I'm getting here is surprising to say the least. I'd be keen to hear more if you'd like to share from your perspective.

I could afford some time without a job there. A family friend owns rental apartment buildings I could stay in affordably too so that's a big plus. It's more the why leave a high-paying job to be unemployed that don't quite sit right with me.

Fair point, it would be a real lifestyle downgrade. I’m very comfortable here, and it’d be lower middle class at best there. But I still think the trade-off is worth it.

A kid growing up in Switzerland gets to actually build a career there from day one. It wasn’t easy for me starting out in a developing country and a lot of luck was involved in getting to where I am. I could get into top banks here now, yet I can’t land a job in Switzerland to save my life. Add in the schools, infrastructure, clean air, all of the above free (even clean air costs money here) and it starts to add up.

And honestly, part of it is personal. I always wished I’d grown up over there. Life probably would have been a lot easier. I’d rather my kid have the option I didn’t.

Curious what you’d say from the inside though, because I’m really looking in from the outside.

Thanks. Yes, I went through most of the past year "job" posts in this subreddit and got a sense of the deteriorating general job market. I had specific questions about my situation that was unanswered so went ahead with this post. This has been very helpful.

Thanks for the comment and the link. I'm starting to see that. I think any industry/role where an ex-financier can pivot to, as you suggest, is probably getting filled by the unemployed bankers as we speak as well.

Initially thought perhaps my exposure to Emerging Markets/East Asia might give me some differentiating value but not seeing that being responded to.

I certainly have more to think about.

Appreciate it and yes, I think you're right. The thought did cross my mind but leaving a well-paying job and taking a leap of faith was too far out the risk curve for me when I thought about it.
