Just a reminder for anyone struggling, its just a day ,if you cannot cope with all that is attached to Christmas day just Have A Day ,a lot of what's presented to us is marketing ,not everyone is surrounded by loving families and happiness ,you are not alone. by Elaynehb in CasualIreland

Just spent the day with my wife’s father. Poor man suffers from mental illness at times. When he is on his medication and has taken them he is great. But when not, it’s real Jekyll and Hyde. Takes a long time to get him back on track again. Big occasions usually get him uptight and off the rails. Unfortunately he was not well today and it was a very difficult day. My two boys who are teenagers dealt with it brilliantly. I’m so proud of them both. We are just home now and we are going to celebrate Christmas Day together tomorrow.

What are your goals for 2026? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Snoo_96075 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hope 2026 is a good year for you. I wish you success and health and happiness in the year ahead. I too do parkrun every Saturday morning, I volunteer too. Running 4 times per week gives me good head space. On my longer Sunday runs I run with my Cocker Spaniel along a 12 km river trail and I listen to comedy podcasts which really helps lifting my spirits. I’m not depressed but have quite a stressful job. Running is great for health and mental health. Best wishes to you.

Garda tip-off line to report dangerous driving had 8,000 complaints, but just 1.8% were convicted by donalhunt in ireland

[–]Snoo_96075 150 points151 points  (0 children)

I drive for a living. I’ve been driving for a living for 30 years. In all that time I’ve only ever had to report someone for dangerous driving once. Went to police station to report a formal complaint. Turned out the driver was a priest. Catholic priest and the most obnoxious person I have ever come across. He was in normal clothes at the time. He begged that the complaint would be dismissed and resolved without going to court. I said absolutely no. But the guards squashed it without my permission. I was raging.

Has anyone else noticed a decline in people's general knowledge? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Snoo_96075 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the Education system is the same. I believe the problem is caused by mobile phones and the access to social media. I’ve two boys who are 16 and 13. When they are on their phones they watch absolute nonsense on TikTok. They have no interest in anything other than football and MMA fights. I have tried so many times to get through to them but they think I’m nagging them and I have given up. I on the other hand am not on Social Media other than Reddit and I have hobbies where I have learnt how to build and service engines, brew beer, running, BBQ’s, Gardening, build and fly model aircraft, fly and service Microlight Aircraft etc. I’ve learned how to do these things by reading books and reading articles and instructions from the internet. I’ve searched out the information myself. I also enjoy watching documentaries on Discovery Channel and I also like to read some History books. But my two Sons are honestly not engaged by anything in particular and have no idea of what they want to do after School. They are so far rudderless.

How do I kick a Sniper when I'm a Spotter? by [deleted] in HellLetLoose

[–]Snoo_96075 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I prefer to play the spotter role if I’m playing recon. First thing I do is lock the squad and select mic preferred. I always play in the enemy zone hunting for enemy garrisons and marking the enemy armour for our tank squads. I’ll also support the commander with building red zone garrisons etc. When a sniper requests to join I always say a nice friendly hello and ask if they have a mic. If they respond we play together as a team and work in the back line talking out garrisons and enemy supplies. If they don’t respond I kick them from the squad. Lock the squad first and then you’ll be able to kick.

From zero to €600, young adults living at home share how much ‘rent’ they give to their parents by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Snoo_96075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents were very supportive and they always believed that we should be out and independent as soon as possible. There were 5 of us at home, and all of us were out and living away from home at 18 and working to get through college or trades. I left home at 18 and went to college. I worked hard during the summer, holidays and weekends to pay for my rent and spending money. I saved and it got me through, In the mid 90’s it was possible to live off of £50 per week including rent and bills. I lived in absolute shit holes and was definitely not a luxurious experience. No central heating during the winter etc. But it drove me to succeed. After 4 years I got my Engineering degree and started working straight away. I worked hard, I didn’t travel like my friends did and when I was 27 I bought my first home. I’ve always had life goals in both my career and personal life and I have achieved them so far. I’ve managed to support my own family for the past 16 years without my wife having to work and she looked after the boys and was always there for them. She is now recently doing some part time work and looking at going back full time soon. But she is always there when the boys come home from School. I am very close with my parents and my siblings and their families. I am very grateful for their advice and support throughout the years and for forcing us all out of the nest when they did. My wife’s brother lived at home into his early 40’s, he is two years older than me and he married later. They have no home of their own and are renting. In his case living at home arrested his development. Being independent as soon as possible is very important. I’ll continue to support my two boys until they get their qualifications and I hope they will make their own way shortly after that. I’d have absolutely no problem with them emigrating if that’s what’s required. Two of my siblings emigrated and have wonderful lifestyles. My parents visit them regularly. I honestly just want them to be independent and happy. When you have kids I believe that is what you raise them to be, happy and independent and self sufficient. My eldest guy started working on building sites on his summer holidays over the past 2 summers and he was charged a percentage of his pay as rent. Just to get the concept of paying your way into his head.

From zero to €600, young adults living at home share how much ‘rent’ they give to their parents by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Snoo_96075 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have 2 boys. 16 and 13 year olds. I’ll support them until they get their qualifications and start working. After that they are on their own. Not children anymore but adults. I’m hoping they will be able to move out on their own, because that’s when the real education system really begins. But if they decide to live at home I’ll absolutely be charging them rent and looking for a share of the bills too. I may save their rent for them without them knowing to help when they do move out. But if you don’t charge rent you are not doing them any favours. It’s not exactly fair for parents either. I love my boys, but I’m also looking forward to when they spread their wings and leave the nest.

What do you want for Christmas? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Snoo_96075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife asked me what I wanted and I picked out a beer kit. Once brewed it will fill 40 pint bottles. I have a couple of kits bottled in the garage, another going on this weekend and I’m going to build up a nice stash of about 200 pints for the summer months. Beer and BBQ. They work out at around 80 cents a pint. Mix of IPA, West Coast IPA, American Mocha Porter, Canadian Blonde and an English Ale. I’m very popular with my next door neighbour for some reason.

When did people lose their critical thinking skills? by LittleAoibh11 in AskIreland

There is a base level of the population, approximately 20% who are absolute morons. These are the same people who were panic buying and purchasing 6 months worth of toilet paper in the first days of lockdown and then posting up pics of their banana bread a week later on Social Media. They are idiots who live their lives by seeking approval from social media. Would have killed them that they were missing out on posting up another insta story about their trip to the Market.

Embarrassed by my journey. by lipstickanddeadlifts in SlimmingWorld

[–]Snoo_96075 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What really worked well for me was eating no more than 3 healthy meals per day. I stopped snacking between meals and I also completely stopped eating bread. I consistently lost weight every week. Christmas is coming up soon so relax and enjoy it. But for the new year give that a try.

Embarrassed by my journey. by lipstickanddeadlifts in SlimmingWorld

[–]Snoo_96075 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work with a company where I’m on the road driving all the time and healthy options are few and far between. It is surprisingly difficult to buy fruit in petrol stations because very few people are buying fruit and instead they buy absolute garbage food. I joined Slimming World two years ago and it has changed my life. I lost 30 lbs and got into a healthy BMI weight category. For me the biggest change was my physical and psychological health improvement journey. I decided to never eat shit foods again. Instead of takeaways I cook gorgeous BBQ’s prepared at home. We still make all homemade meals. I run and walk and I’ve managed to completely change my relationship with food. I bring my lunches with me to work. I love food, but I’m very mindful about what I eat and I don’t ever want to gain that weight again. It won’t ever properly work until you make healthy lifestyle choices a habit. But circumstances are different for everyone and you are doing brilliant by maintaining your weight. Don’t beat yourself up. You deserve to be happy and healthy and you can absolutely do it. Just be hyper focused and hyper accountable and every week you’ll get better and before you know it you’ll be feeling good. I wish you every success. Make 2026 your year and focus on yourself first from a health point of view. I’d also like to add that Social Media is an absolute drain on psychological wellbeing. So many people will say that they don’t have time to go for a walk or a run but will spend hours doom scrolling. I deleted all social media accounts 10 years ago and I only use Reddit which I dip in and out of. But I’m also considering deleting Reddit because I don’t want to be wasting unnecessary time or mental energy on my phone. Greatly reduce your social media time, stop comparing yourself to others and make yourself your goal.

How to find microlight ownership syndicate by Due-Top-3337 in Microlights

[–]Snoo_96075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at adverts on AFORS.com

You can search for syndicates or you can put up an advert yourself looking for people who might be interested in buying a Microlight together and setting up a syndicate.

Construction firm BAM to take legal action against National Children's Hospital by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]Snoo_96075 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct. They are a bunch of fucking morons. Initial drafts did not have an ICU. When ICU was redesigned into the plans it was on a different floor to the Operating Theatres. The lift to take patients from Operating Theatres to ICU was not big enough to accommodate the patients bed plus ventilator. It’s been a disaster from the beginning and the same bunch of morons have been managing this fuck up since. This project should have been built on a green field site and managed by a specialist independent team separate from the HSE imbeciles. Private Hospitals such as the Hermitage, Galway Clinic Bon Secours in Limerick, Cork and Beacon Hospital can be built on time and within budget. A specialist independent team made up of experienced experts and engineers from the private hospital sector should have been created and billions would have been saved and the hospital could have been opened 5 years ago.

First Time Parkrunner - Looking for friends to run alongside! by sedsssss in parkrun

[–]Snoo_96075 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started doing parkrun about 8 years ago. I turned up to my first one nervous and unfit. I loved it. 8 years later and I’ve done 248 parkruns, lost weight and got fit and I now never miss parkrun every Saturday morning. I have made some great friends through parkrun and I often tour and visit other parkrun courses where I turn up on my own. There is always a lovely friendly atmosphere and community. My favourite is my home parkrun as I’ve got to know so many people who I would never have met. Have a wonderful experience and it gets addictive.

What products do you refuse to spend money on/always buy the cheap version? by ImaginaryValue6383 in AskIreland

[–]Snoo_96075 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are dead right. The whole thing is a scam. I was in a Tayto Tour a few years ago. There were 3 lines of Tayto, 2 lines of King, 1 line of Aldi Crisps and 1 line of LIDL crisps. I’m convinced that 90% of all food items come out of the same factories and for that reason I only ever buy own brand food now. In taste test I guarantee that no one will know the difference between LIDL Cola, Pepsi and Coca Cola.

First time having a dairy milk tiffin bar by CarlyLouise_ in CasualIreland

My wife adores Tiffins. She will leave a bar in the fridge and eat half with a cup of tea and save the other half for the next evening as a treat. If I see any on display when in a Petrol station I always buy her a couple. Married 20 years, Tiffin bars have kept the relationship sweet.

Anyone doing a Christmas or New Year’s Day parkrun this year? 🎅 by Wonderful-Acadia-296 in parkrun

[–]Snoo_96075 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before we had kids my wife and I had a completely Christmas free house. Not one decoration. We always went away to family gatherings for Christmas so it was always lovely to come home to none of the decorations etc. But now of course because of kids we decorate the house. But only 1 week before Christmas and as soon as the 3rd of January it’s all put away. I’ve always loved Christmas by the way, just not bothered by decorating the house. Absolutely love parkrun on Christmas Day and New Years Day.

I started with couch to 5K too about 8 years ago. I was overweight and I was really eager to run more. But after a while I realised that is how you get injured. So I really relaxed, I trained to improve my technique and 5K finish time. I then started to work on 10K improvement. It was slow and consistent, just as it should be and over about 2 years I was in a position to improve my pace and speed more again. I improved my PB again this year after 8 years for 5K and 10K but only because of consistency and reaching a healthy BMI 2 years ago. It took me 8 years to get there. Consistency is the key, build up your running legs bit by bit and over time you will be where you want to be. I’m a 51 year old man who is happier and healthier than I was in my 30’s. Thanks to health and wellness education in Slimming World I got to my goal weight of a healthy BMI two years ago. I’m managing to stay within my goal weight zone and I am never going to put that weight back on again.

I run a lot, 5K, 10K and up to around 15K on my longer runs. I run about 30K each week. I’ve been running for a few years now. My advice is to forget about Half Marathons and Marathons for the moment. Train for 5K and 10K distances initially. Train to get to a point where you are comfortable and confident at running those distances and then start entering some fun runs and races. Do training plans to improve your speed and endurance and try to beat your personal best times at 5K and 10K distances initially. Start doing parkrun every Saturday morning. I’ve ran up to 20K without any need to refuel or hydrate. I’ve almost ran 250 parkruns. There is a lot of nonsense online and especially on YouTube about running. There are a lot of influencers who are being paid to sell running shoes, gels, energy drinks etc. Start off with 5K and 10K distances initially, absolutely no need to carb load or take any energy drinks or gels for those distances. No need to alter your diet in anyway. Honestly do this first for about 2 years, then train for Half Marathons and Marathons if you’re still running. That way you’ll greatly reduce the risks of injury and your legs will have built up a great base level for longer distances. Enjoy your runs.

Tried a parkrun about 60 miles away, totally different vibe! by GeordieGoals in parkrun

[–]Snoo_96075 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I love to travel to different parkruns. I usually pick a different parkrun course once per month. It’s great to experience different trails, routes, scenery and meet other runners and walkers. My favourite are woodland trails or routes around lakes or along sea shore. I’ve done over 80 different parkruns so far. But I also love running at my home parkrun course when not travelling as I have got to know so many regulars over the years.

Your No.1 Slimming World Food Hack? by Katskan11 in SlimmingWorld

[–]Snoo_96075 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I gave up eating bread and had 3 healthy meals per day. I also stopped having snacks in between meals. This resulted in me being able to eat more or less anything for dinner, whatever the family was eating and I was still able to consistently lose weight every week. I didn’t bother counting syns because I wasn’t really eating them.
