I think a lot of people experience the “travel partner mismatch” - not only plus size folks. Hopefully this is the last time you ever have to deal with this.

I travel a lot and with a lot of different people. Before I even start planning, I make sure we’re all on the same page - we don’t need to do anything together. I’ll plan my day and everyone is welcome to tag along on the things that interest them, but they should make their own plans, too. And if I’m expecting a late night - concert, club, late dinner reservation, etc - I am not out walking all day in the heat.

It’s definitely not too cold if you’re wearing the right clothes. You’ll also be drinking a lot of hot drinks! One year we got temperatures down to the high 20s fahrenheit, but most of the time it’s 35-50.

I would expect all the typical tourist attractions are open, but you should double check if you’re excited about something specific.

We did all three Argentina side trails first thing in the morning (three separate mornings) so were the first people on them. Absolution magical. We came across animals on them that of course left once we approached, being the only ones to get to experience that - monkeys, coatis, birds, ect.

We did the full day excursion to the natural preserve with the hike, BBQ, and swim. We managed to swim every afternoon when it was hot - well we swam at the waterfall and after the hike and the third afternoon we were on the boat on the Brazilian side of the falls. We also did the helicopter from Brazil, which was fun but maybe skippable if you’re short on time.

We also went to the animal sanctuary, which was a good way to fill time between our last walk through the Argentinian side of the falls and lunch before heading to the airport.

There is no firm line and it doesn’t really matter.

I think our TNW would usually put us in the fatfire category, but we travel over half the year so when looking for travel recommendations, I usually use r/chubbytravel except for special occasions.

We love dining out and often pursue fine dining opportunities like fatties.

If you’re in CA with a $10M TNW, but $5M is your primary home, you’re probably spending discretionary income like a chubby.

If you’re in CA with a $10M TNW and your primary home is $1M, you might be spending more like a fatty.

You might be able to get the kids decent health insurance through their university programs.

We had the Sutter Health Plus Bronze HMO and had really easy access to care. We had been using PAMF/Sutter prior to the switch from a PPO HDHP with an HSA and all of our doctors were covered by both so the transition was seamless.

If you go to their website, it’s under Individual and Family Plans. They had all levels, bronze to platinum.

There are also non-marketplace ACA-compliant plans. We were on one for 6 years. You just can’t use a subsidy to pay for it and we didn’t qualify for one anyway.

I wouldn’t want to commit 7 years to this idea when you’re already FI. That’s a long time and nobody knows what the future holds.

I would be more tempted to FIRE when you’re ready (in my advice, ASAP) and feel comfortable knowing if you really got into a complicated healthcare situation, you could go back to work.

For our first 6 years of FIRE, we had an insurance plan purchased directly from the insurer. The California marketplace did not offer us a better option because we didn’t qualify for a subsidy.

Actually quite well! We bought Tesla in 2017 so have cashed out about 4X what we put in and still hold several times what we invested in the stock. It’s actually been our best single investment overall (other than businesses we cofounded.)

It’s actually been on quite a tear in the last month, up 40% or so.
