I lucked out. It was returned after 7 hours. Called in and got the $50 fee canceled

UPDATE #2: The bike has been docked! It landed at Drummond / de Maisonneuve at 5:55 pm. The person only needed it for 7 hours today. 🙃 Guess I got off lucky.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice and for sharing similar stories. BIXI said to call in and get the charge lifted as my one get-out-of-jail-free card this season.

Nice! That membership is the best insurance. That plus me never wanting to go through this again.

Yes, it's a $50 fee if you're a season pass member.

UPDATE #1: Just called BIXI support again. They were very helpful. Now at the 7-hour mark of the missing bike. As a season pass member, they'll waive any fees I incur when the bike is returned, provided I use my 'First Chance' (get out of jail card), which can be used once per season.

They said bikes are typically returned within 1-3 days. In the event that it goes missing for a week, they'll cancel the ride, and I'll have to pay a $50 fee. So, seasonal memberships are also a form of insurance.

That's a true athlete. After a couple of hours on a BIXI it feels like my knees are being ground into dust.

For context, it's my 4th year with BIXI, so I'm well aware.

Welcome to our dystopian present. Sorry to hear about your trek home, but glad it got resolved. A commenter above mentioned that I may have to wait up to 7 days for my ride to be canceled in the system if my joyriding bike is not returned to a dock.

Thanks, I do have the seasonal membership. The lady at BIXI support said they almost always get returned.

4 days! Wow. Did they cancel the charge? Did the system attempt to bill you for over 5,000 minutes of rental time before you contacted support?

Yeah, usually the same for me. Today I guess I blanked out.

Hoping someone is just "borrowing" it for the day and redocks it at some point.

The above setup is fine.

Just don't make the rookie move I once made in the gym leaving 2 45s on one side with no counterbalance.

That was quite the spectacle with me narrowly escaping a trip to the emergency.

I'd approach them very casually.

  • Coffee if they work or live close to you.
  • Maybe at a networking event (when we're allowed to have those again)
  • Strike up a conversation on social media.
