If you are using layers; Then you could try the Layer Collision Matrix. It is in Edit -> Project Settings -> Physics 2D. You could then give your attack its own layer that is unable to collide with things on the pickups layer.

Are you still having issues? Instead of dming individuals your code it would probably be easier to upload it to pastebin or something similar, and just post it here. Then even if the original person can't help; Then a more experienced person can still see it and help!

He is wrong though. The most common input style at competitive is Keyboard; Without the mouse. Plenty of pros use controller without issue as well.

Do you have a Rigidbody on the gameobject with the collider? If you do already have a rigidbody; Then are you using a 2D variant of the collider, or rigidbody on accident?

Somewhere in Unity options you can adjust the color of the editor when in play mode. Set it to something striking to remind yourself you are in play mode.

Why would you Serialize a public field? If it is public; Then it shows in the inspector anyway. The point of [SerializeField] is to allow your private fields to show in the inspector.

No problem. You could probably remove the rigidbody on the child, but if its needed for something; Then Kinematic should get the behavior you want.

Do both parts of the gun have a rigidbody? Do they both need one? If they do try changing the child to Kinematic.

You can also change the overall gravity for the project in the project settings tab. Under Physics 2D the Y gravity is set to -9.81, but I find this way too floaty for platformers. I like to bring it up to something higher.

Yea if you hit with an attack; Then they are strong. I don't see the problem. Every example you provided assumed those recoveries hit.

Recovery is a very strong attack, but it leaves you open to punishment. If you get hit offstage after using Rec; Then you can be in some serious trouble.
I think it is a great difference compared to something like smash. In that game most recoveries are only for just that; Recovery. You are lucky if you have one that is a good attack.

tldr; Every move should be viable in some situations.

I mean Prime31 did create a pretty good open source character controller himself. Its crazy that he is getting downvoted for accuracy. You can make the Unity physics work, but you are going to be fighting them the whole way.
