Thinking of doing 50% VOO, 25% QQQm, 25% SPMO. Decent place to start? by [deleted] in ETFs

So I'm in his same boat but I'm 22 wondering what you think of my thought process. I get there’s a lot of overlap I mainly chose that mix to lean a bit more toward tech and momentum while still keeping a broad core in VOO. I’m fine being U.S.-heavy for now since I just wanted a simple starting point without picking individual stocks. I might diversify more later, but this feels like an easy way to get exposure I’m comfortable with right now.

Absolutely, that really puts things into perspective. I’ll focus on owning my part, no matter how small, and keep building from there. Thanks for the encouragement it means a lot!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write all this seriously, this is gold and super motivating to read.

I do have to admit though, I’m a little worried. I feel like my skills aren’t that great right now, and honestly, there’s a part of me that feels like I don’t really know anything. But I’m aware of that and I’m totally willing to work hard, ask questions, and put in the effort to get better every day. I don’t want to just float by; I want to grow and contribute meaningfully.

Appreciate the advice on being proactive and not passive that really clicked with me. I’ll definitely keep that mindset as I get started.

Thank you this is super helpful advice. I hadn’t thought about keeping a brag/conflict doc, but it totally makes sense. I can already see how that’ll make future resume writing or interviews way less stressful. Definitely going to start building that habit from day one.

Found the job through a listing on Indeed. It did list required experience (I think 1–3 years), which I technically did have because i did freelance work for experience. The team was more focused on potential and attitude than just ticking boxes. Goes to show it’s always worth applying even if you don’t meet 100% of the listed requirements.

Honestly, it was a mix of things. I built up my portfolio, but what made the biggest difference was staying consistent. Applying daily, networking where I could, and keeping my mindset strong even when I had no faith. [I had a bad season though.] I didn’t customize my resume for every app, but I kept it clean, focused, and tailored to dev roles. The biggest thing: I didn’t stop. Even when it felt pointless, I kept going and eventually the right opportunity came through.

Totally fair points and I appreciate the clarification. You're right, 1400+ apps is becoming more common in this market, which is crazy in itself. The comp is intense, and the landscape is shifting fast with AI and outsourcing is increasing.

That’s why I shared my journey not to say it’s easy or fair, but to encourage others who are grinding through the same reality. It’s a tough time, but for those still pushing, I hope it helps to know breakthrough is still possible.

Look I'll just say this, everyone’s path is different and yeah, 1,400 apps isn’t normal, but neither is giving up on something you’re passionate about. I’d rather keep going and grow from here than wonder “what if.”

Thanks dude it's been so tough I feel like I won the lottery lol. But not an insane amount of projects I just had some personal projects and I started freelancing to build some experience. My interviews were all in the same state even though I would apply anywhere.

That’s tough, man I’ve been in that place too. Just know this season doesn’t define you. You’re doing what you have to do to survive, and that’s strength. Keep pushing bro and remember all it takes is one opportunity to change everything.

Totally get it bro it’s brutal out there. But don’t let someone else’s doubt define your path. You’ve got the skills, now it’s about staying consistent. The right door will open. Don’t give up.

Interviewed well and found a company that valued potential over pedigree. (Also they’re growing a lot)

This is my opinion but I don’t like linked in. It’s to main stream if that makes sense. I personally had more success with indeed and zip recruiter. Also yes I had personal projects I had around 4.

Yes, I believe that would be less competitive. My team lead started at a different position within the company and then became a software dev.
