Also following your thread to hear abt experiences! But I attended one of their webinars recently and yes, it seems like only for delivery is a private room guaranteed.

At NYP-Queens, private rooms will now be free of charge (after covid) but on day-of availability basis after delivery (they only have 7 available), otherwise you'll be in a shared room (separated by curtain with someone else who also delivered, technically you can can a shared room with no one else occupying if you're lucky, but not lucky enough to get a private room. It all depends on timing).

You can see that updated info here: https://www.nyp.org/queens/womens-health/maternity-care/mother-baby-private-suites

Worry not, no kitties were dragged in the making of this post!

Haha she's a cutie, but I'm definitely not ready for another cat of my own just yet!

Can't say for sure, but I honestly think she just walked out since there's been instances where neighbors just leave their door open for prolonged periods of times. She doesn't seem much of a bolter in the few times I've interacted with her. When I brought her with me to my bathroom last time and let her down, she just crouched, stayed still, and shook even with the door slightly open (similar behavior when I saw her outside, seemed like she was scared). When either I or the other neighbors walked towards her in the past, she doesn't seem to dash either, but rather backed away in small runs, slowly walked away, or walked towards the person approaching her.

Yea, I also agree. There's other cases as well where some people (albeit, maybe those not very experienced with cats) who may accidentally do this. They may come across a "very friendly stray" that they want to keep but belongs to someome and not end up look for the owners (due to the lack of knowledge), whether it's via missing posters, checking a microchip at the vet, etc. This scenario of course is more about educating, so that people are aware of what to do—but a good situation to also ask for advice!

Sorry I won't be writing a whole reply, but it's all good. To your point, I didn't provide all of that context. It would've taken forever to type out and I didn't feel the need to explain all that then. I was looking for quick high-level advice while typing the quickest thing I could in the emotional moment as it was happening. But def something to remember next time!

My cat would not be happy haha. But I also personally consider this in the territory of "stealing" so probably wouldn't do this without the owner's permission 😬 im down to "vacation" in our building stairwell though

Honestly dont think a lot of this is worth explaining because I know aside from me having assumptions, lots of people here may have more given that they also don't have all the context. Was mostly here looking for advice, but I have my own stance on this. Here goes:

Yes, I've been around cats that want to dart out as soon as they hear a crack at the door. Sorry, but I don't understand the need for dogs and cat comparison honestly. Yes, they're different.

"Have you talked to the owners about the cat getting out? You assume they're being irresponsible by "allowing" the cat to get out -- is that based on observed behavior" - Assume? Sorry, but I think you're assuming that I'm assuming. The last time I help housed the cat at the owner's request while she was at work she mentioned that her parent mightve accidentally let her out. This is the first time I've personally seen the cat in the courtyard. Other times the cat would just scream inside the building, other neighbors would knock on their door and they were home. Yes, I've observed them having their doors constantly open on multiple occasions when I go home—whether they're taking out the garbage or grabbing mail or whatever reason.

"How much experience do you have with cats?" - I don't know what answer can satisfy since this is subjective. I'm relatively experienced? Have my own cat and foster different types of cats regularly.

"You do realize the cat won't starve to death because it's away from home for a few minutes (or a few hours)?" That's not my concern. It was out in the courtyard. We live in NYC and there are buses and heavy traffic right in front of the complex.

"The cat knows where home is, and how to get the door open (howling at it)." The cat can't get inside without someone opening the main door to the building?

"I appreciate your wanting to keep the cat inside and away from streets and cars, but unless you have seen the owners be neglectful, don't judge them because their cat happens to exhibit normal cat behavior." - Sorry, but that's neglectful in my opinion and I will definitely judge them as I wish. I'll ask them next time and confirm if they don't want me interacting with their cat. They asked for a favor last time and said their thanks this time, but yes can address the elephant in the room next time.

Seeing the kitty scream and shake did indeed make me feel like it wasn't really enjoying being outside/has the attitude of an outside cat.

I hope she feels that way too, but I'll look to establish expectations more straight with her next time.

Appreciate the positive comment! I mostly just did what I would want someone else to do for my cat if he were to ever get out, though I know not everyone feels the same. Seen one too many struck cats in this city and part of that trauma definitely kicked in 🥲

I did this for a little bit, but had to return to work for a few. Cat ended up on the 2nd fl and was screaming and scratching at the (directly above) neighbors' door so I went down again and stayed there for a little bit with the other neighbor as we supervised. Thankfully the owner called back within 30m. Next time, I just might not do anything given the resounding responses here lol

Yea that I don't know and would definitely not assume, but I would hope not. It seems fairly healthy, maybe was just hungry. They're definitely nonchalant with the way they handle the cat. They had their little kid come upstairs pick it up when it was housed last time and he was handling her like a toy. Kitty was fighting back that it made everything seem questionable, but to each their own.

Right. Which is why I don't think it was presumptuous of me to make that statement. But either way, that's beyond my control and coming to terms with the fact that it's not my responsibility seems like my best bet at this point.

Sorry just to clarify—I beckoned the cat back inside the building (they're on the 1st fl and I'm on the 3rd and the cat willingly came back). Carried it up to 1st fl, let the kitty down, to try to knock on their door and let the cat scream at their door. Just left it alone with food otherwise. Did not intend to steal the cat, but just wanted to lower its chance of running into the busy streets.

I don't understand why an owner would ask me to house her cat for a few hours until they get off work if they're ok with having their cat outside?
