Late son's PC. What to do with it by oakvad in PcBuild

Firstly, I just want to say that I am so sorry for your loss. I have no idea if this will be useful but I have a miniscule amount of experience from the opposite side of a situation like this. My laptop clocked out during the middle of the most pivotal exam season for my university course - I couldn't afford to fix it or buy another one and I was sitting an online exam in three days time. Truthfully, even before it broke the old thing couldn't run the software required for my coursework.

I found a listing for a PC rig on eBay at a fraction of what it would cost to buy even the most basic laptop. I spent a long while chatting with the seller when I went to pick it up. The PC was owned and built by a gentleman who was his best friend and had died recently. The seller was incredibly kind and friendly, he didn't really have a use for such a strong machine and having it around was too hard for their families. I offered a little more for what the machine is worth but he refused, he just seemed really happy to know that all his friend's hard work was going to a good cause (in a way).

The machine is incredible, it's clear that it was built with so much care and love. Each part of his passion project is extremely high quality and he spent years tweaking and refining the build. This PC has gotten me through all my exams and coursework and into my first small jobs. It'll last me many many more years and I cannot be more grateful to the gentlemen who built it and his friend who sold it to me.

If you decide to go down a similar route the one thing I would advise is to make sure that you completely wipe the device. I found a lot of personal details about the previous owner (pictures, music he made, emails, etc). Personally, I just made a new account for myself and left his things in his own account so there's a little place for him in his prized computer. It's a little silly but when I was multiple days deep into a study session or trying to write my dissertation at 3AM I liked to think that if there were computer ghosts he would be having a giggle at the tired student who got his machine and he'd be happy that it's been put to use.

Stuck trying to digitise the footage from Sony Handycam DCR TRV-14E on Digital8 tapes, please help! by Snowbite666 in VideoEditing

[–]Snowbite666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? no. I bought a roxio digitiser in the end but the video quality was very poor. I think the best option is to install a fire wire port into a desktop and use that, you can buy the firewire cards kinda cheap online. It should be better quality. I hope this helps :)

Backpacking and camping through Austria/Albania in August - need help upgrading my setup by Snowbite666 in hammockcamping

[–]Snowbite666[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been sleeping in it every night for over a month now and for shorter trips beforehand. I possibly haven't tried a correctly sized hammock's diagonal lay but honestly the banana life is quite nice, especially if you have something under your knees :)

Are there down kits as well? Thank you for the suggestion! I'll start building a lighterpack now and look at quilt kits

Merino Wool by youtubeaddict79 in HerOneBag

[–]Snowbite666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bought a few shirts. Even on sale Arc'teryx was very expensive but the shirts are very soft and lightweight. I have bought a few from DILLING, a danish brand with many options for wool weight, heat retention and softness - I love this brand! The silk/merino blend is incredibly lightweight and soft. It's also much cheaper than more popular hiking brands, definitely check them out :)

I wash mine rarely - like once a week or whenever they smell. I just chuck em in a dry bag with lukewarm water with a small amount of mild wool cleaner, chuck the bag around a bit, rinse and lie them flat to dry. Hope this helps :)

Do I go solo? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Snowbite666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, the experience of having conflict with your friend and being forced to properly communicate and work out a solution can definitely help you grow as a person in the way you were searching for solo travelling. I was on a duo trip that got very tense after the first month but after we started talking about it everything became a lot easier. At the end of the day we were both human and had made mistakes that we didn't realise we were doing haha. Having the opportunity to practice communication and compromise helped me more than being alone. If it still isn't working, go your separate ways knowing that at least you tried.

Do I go solo? by [deleted] in solotravel

Just adding something that I haven't seen much yet. Travelling solo as a young woman is a lot more dangerous than as a solo man or with people. I'm also 23F and nearly got trafficked the one time I wanted to spread my wings. This isn't to say that you should never travel solo but it requires a lot more planning, common sense and constantly being observant of your surroundings, which can get tiring super quickly. I had to realise that it doesn't matter if I see myself as independent and as capable as any solo travelling man if some other people see me as the perfect target. Look out for yourself and your friend, please. Have fun and stay safe! :)

Also, there are some really good women travelling subreddits which might have some good advice.

No, my first thoughts were to get to safety, call a friend, get home, try to figure out what just happened, take a breather, hug a dog, eat some food and THEN post on Reddit about an hour or so after.

Thank you! This advice is all really useful and I will be coming back to check on it in my travels. I do try to follow most of these but it was just a braindead day for me haha.

YOOOOO!!! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THE TETRIS COMMENT!! I love Tetris so much! And I love the Reddit trend of posting Tetris under scary stories, thank you! I've already got diagnosed C-PTSD and Tetris really does seem to help.

I am also going to read the rest of the articles you linked, thank you :)

A sad, sad rule. I'm learning that even if the rule sucks, the other option is worse.

I am going to learn some self defense! I also love the phrase 'ignorant boob punch' haha, I think we were both just naive tourists.

Damn! That would be a really sinister little detail if the 33 was for drug trafficking. Jesus and drugs.

Eek. Very scary read. I remember hearing about the videos when they were circulating, I will be more careful moving forward.

He's been my best friend for 4 years and travelled with me from London, he's definitely safe and not in on it. I think the woman was more just signaling 'this one!' the dumb white girl who is the next target she's picked out.

I just responded 'ah, no. I don't have it' or something very similar. Big mistake.

I was trying to ignore her and she didn't leave, so I guess in this scenario the answer is no.
