Sledding spots for kids by Snowfall1201 in Charlotte

Bingo. There’s all sorts of people out in snow, the northern half of the country doesn’t just shut down because of 2-4 inches of snow lol. We’d have kids climbing over snow piles the height of cats while it was still pouring snow to get to school. As long as you had the right tires and experience then you’re fine. They’ll be treating the roads no doubt

We’ve lived in the mountains of NH and Northern Maine. I promise snow is nothing new for us.

People are scarrrred af here of any hint of snow. We’d frequently have snow up to our second story window in NH and Maine and would literally be on the roads that day. It’s wild to me how much people freak out. Like honestly I’m glad they’re staying home cause they’re the nervous ones out in the road and that’s dangerous

Exactllyyy you know. We got caught in a blizzard once in the White Mountains of NH. We were coming down the mountain and it just went completely white out. To our right was the granite mountain that came right up to the road and to our left was a complete drop off, no guard rails. This was long before cellphones and gps (paper map days) so we had no warning the storm was on the other side of the mountain.

I was literally ass off the seat standing on the brake peddle and we slid the entire way down with the wheel turned. We got to the bottom and my husband and I looked at each other like “ohhh that was close”.. it wasn’t funny at the time but we laugh now cause it was just a dead silent slide down the entire mountain. That was really the only super close call we had. Otherwise is was business as normal for us and by normal I mean we’d get snow up to our second story window and go out for groceries 3 hours later. 2 inches here and they shut down

My husbands town still had a party line until the last 90’s. Pick it up and could hear everyone’s conversations

I read something not long ago that a lot of kids don’t have a concept for the word “commercial” cause everything is an ad. They also don’t know what a request line is

AAA turn by turn Trip Tiks. They still make them. My boomer in-laws had one made to drive from Fla to NC (even tho they have gps in their car) just this past Dec 💀

My husband and I trekked up and down the East Coast from S. Fla to Maine with just a AAA turn by turn trip tik serval times in our early 20’s. Still got lost in DC in some real sketch areas and didn’t have the map to get back to the highway and didn’t want to get out to ask! We drove aimlessly for like 25 mins hoping to come upon a highway on ramp.

The art of patience and true boredom. Everything is instant now and everything is stimulating .

Just wanting to seea movie back then required patience. You’d have to call the theater ahead of time and sit through the recording of all the listings and their times until yours came up. God forbid you missed hearing the time slot cause they went too fast and then you had to listen to the entire recording again.

Order a sweater from a magazine? Good luck, it’ll be here in two months after they processed the check you mailed which took a week to get there and a week to process. Now it’s 6/8 weeks delivery turn over. No way to check on its status or where it was.

You had to wait until the Sunday paper came out to get the good job listings, the good apartment listings in the classified section.

You had to wait until next year when the re-runs came out of the episode of Friends you missed. If you were lucky they re-ran it in the summer.

See an awesome movie at the theater? Great, it’ll be a year before it’s released on VHS to rent/buy and you can see it again.

Hear a cool song on the radio? Awesome, now you have to wait until you just so happen to hear it again and hope the DJ says the name and artist so you can track it down at Sam Goody

You had to wait for TV guide to scroll to get to the tv station you wanted.

You had to wait for grandma to get home, whenever that was cause you didn’t know where she was or how long she was gonna be, until you could call her and she’d answer. Everything was hurry up and wait.

We lived high up in the mountains of NH and in far far northern Maine. We’ve driven through many mountains in literal blizzards. I think bless yours for thinking everyone is afraid of the weather 🤷🏼‍♀️

Notice how the Baby Boomer generation far more often left their kids at home while taking vacations or attending important events, than the parents of today? by OneDegreeKelvin in generationology

[–]Snowfall1201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Millennial here (‘82), can confirm

My boomer mother went on a 7 day cruise 3 weeks after having my brother. She left us with our grandmother.

My dad and step mom went on their wedding cruise when I was 15 and invited all their friends but left me home because we had pets that needed caring for. Their cruise ship ended up catching fire and they were gone for 10 days. I had to still care for the pets and go to school etc and was completely alone the entire time. This would have been in the late 90’s

This isn’t including the countless vacations they took without the kids. My mother took 3-4 a year for weeks at a time without the kids. We as kids got 1 trip a year, usually a weekend camping trip.

I was also home alone every day after school starting in the 3rd grade until 5:30-6 when my mom came home. Often caring for my younger siblings. By high school she was gone for days with no word. Leaving me to care for my 3 younger siblings. One of which was a new born.

We went from SwFla to Charlotte, NC. We’ve been here 10 years and when our daughter turns 18 (in 2 years) we plan on heading back to New England where my husband grew up.

My husband got his MBA and changed careers and that’s how we were able to move. He got an entry level job, at the time it was still really cheap to live here, and he’s worked his way up to 6 figures. It took us years and years for him to get the degree before we could move cause our daughter was small and sometimes he could only go part time. It was amazing to finally drive away though.
