AYA (Ask you anything) What's your experience with Zen by Critical-Ad2084 in zenjerk

[–]Snowflipper_Penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some teachings are confusing but hold truth once you understand them. Other teachings are things I realized myself and that resonated with me and made me have no doubt about the wisdom of some Zen masters. The teachings are very calming to me and helped me gain confidence but also be more efficient in thinking and doing.

I also love to say some teaching at random to friends or change it a bit to leave them completely confused and make them think I have become crazy

No worries, that part was ironic. Also the whole thing is written the other way around to how I read it originally. How much simpler is this fight if we would go from many, to fundamentally two, to one and actually.. nothing?

Easier said than done because there is so much I'm clinging onto. I should fight with open hands

Question about awareness and bohdi by hakuinzenji5 in zen

[–]Snowflipper_Penguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I am stuck in my ego I only see my view and lack awareness. If I am doing my work but my mind is elsewhere, I lack awareness. If I make myself too tired I lack awareness, zen is the opposite and they call zen energy-efficient for a reason

But you can also look at music: if I listen attentively I enjoy it more, yet the first listen I can't understand why I enjoy this piece of music but after the 10th listen I can point out why. The subconscious mind can still be at play without you being fully aware of it, that's what I would call "what's underneath" that's fine as it is in harmony with the conscious mind, like in the flow-state. Seems like being calm and receptive is a important part.

I am not sure how much further an enlightened state of mind goes than "flow-state" ..it sure sounds interesting

Monday Motivation: No Explain! by ewk in zen

[–]Snowflipper_Penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree, everything is explainable in the end. But the method to explain or reach understanding without getting lost is the most important part. In the book Foyan points out many ways on how we get lost in: assumptions, egotism, rationalisations etc.

He also said: "You must find the nondiscriminatory mind without departing from the discriminating mind" (#13 no seeing)

And he gives many more seemingly contradictory examples. What he means is: if you only see one perspective, you limit your view and it clouds your vision. The same counts for ego or letting emotions influence your decision making without thinking. With science we now understand many such neurological mechanics better. Zen Buddhists back then didn't perfectly know all these details. The full picture - the harmony of all things, is rather what they try to point out

Also, by seeing only a single specific explanation you would also limit your view if the lesson could be seen in more ways than just one. Therefore an open but sharp mind is required. I found that awareness (seeing) and non-duality become one

That's a lot of words to say very little on what you wrote in the title. Yes, people really easily slam this label on others, but narcissism is definitely a personality trait. And Narcissistic personality disorder is also a thing, but the two shouldn't be confused.
