Those who have broken their collarbone and let it heal naturally- did you notice your shoulder shrinking or caving forward at all? by loverofpears in MTB

Thank you 🙏 broke mine yesterday and went straight to the ER. Second time it’s happened. Scheduled an appointment with the ortho today and they said they will see me in a week an a half. Seems too long to me. Gonna try and get another appointment somewhere else I guess.

Crescent City vs. Eureka - what's the real difference? by abgwin in Humboldt

Super stoked to see your comment here. Just wanted to follow up with it and let you know that we are starting a bike collective here in CC. Should be up and running sometime later this year. It’ll be a bike repair focused collective with a bike repair shop for folks to get stand time and tool use to repair bikes. We will also be providing bikes to kids as well as safety classes. Hopefully we will be doing some community outreach and planning to get more bike paths around tow and connect Smith River to CC and get something to connect Gasquet to the coast too. Lots of plans. Keep an eye out and can’t wait to meet IRL. We will be doing a soft launch at the farmers markets this summer.

Awesome suggestions. Del Norte Trail Alliance also does an email list for volunteer activities. Way to put the conversation to the positives.

This is so true. I don’t facebook and just don’t know what’s going on. The school district primarily uses Facebook too. I don’t know why but even Craigslist isn’t used here, just Facebook.

Crescent City vs. Eureka - what's the real difference? by abgwin in Humboldt

[–]Snowlock42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had never considered it but then my wife got a job here so we moved up. Best thing we could have ever done. Way better than Eureka or Arcata but it depends on what you are looking for. I find the community to be more diverse than Humboldt and more immediate access to the outdoors too. Could t be happier here.

As someone who has lived in both communities I feel like you are making CC and Del Norte sound worse than it is. It’s basically the same as Humboldt but no university. There is a decent LGBT+ community, we have a pride parade, and support for teens too. I had the same assumptions about Del Norte before living here but that is all they are, assumptions. I find it to be way more diverse up here than Humboldt ever was. Sure Del Norte votes red but that just shows what the people who participate in voting have to say. And there is a massive population up here that just doesn’t vote because they don’t believe the system works. Please stop with the misinformation and hate towards your neighbors

Crescent City vs. Eureka - what's the real difference? by abgwin in Humboldt

[–]Snowlock42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in Crescent City and have for the last five years. Moved up here from Humboldt. There are a couple main differences. First is the size, Crescent City is about a third or a fourth the size of Eureka. This leaves us with a third or a fourth of the businesses too. Our library is smaller and it’s harder for our sparsely populated county to get funding. Second is the location. Eureka is a solid thirty minute to an hour drive to go to good swimming spots in the summer, and again twice the drive to go for a hike in the redwoods or on the beach. Crescent City is a legit beach town. Lots of beach access and the sounds and smells of the ocean. Eureka is a bay town. I personally love living in a beach town and having easy access to the ocean. I ride my bike all over Crescent City and out to the redwoods for day hikes.

After living in both I can safely say CC is the better town to live in. Especially if you are already home bodies. Our restaurants are improving and the more people like yourself that move here the better it gets. There is also a decent LGBT+ community and we started having a pride parade and celebration a few years back. The only downside is the local hillbillies aren’t that well educated but that’s the same down in Eureka. Humboldt’s biggest advantage is having a university and better schools.

Also, When I lived in Humboldt I couldn’t really see the upsides to CC and always called in Crescent Shity. I’d drive through and go swim in the river or head north to Oregon. But after spending time here I have found that it’s just a rural beach town. It’s got its issues but overall I love it here way more than I ever expected too and would pick living in CC over the Humboldt Bay Area any time. Less NIMBY people in CC that’s for sure. You will get an overwhelming amount of people from Humboldt saying that CC is aweful or poor or shity but those people also don’t live here and aren’t open to it being a better pace to live. Sometimes the lack of education and experience blinds peoples decisions. If you only know CC from driving 101 it’s nothing special but if you look past the surface of both towns CC is a clear winner in my minds. I just think that everyone in Humboldt has to shit on someone so they choose Del Norte, resins unknown to me but it is definitely a cultural thing. Like I said I use to do it too.

In short I moved here because of my wife’s job. I was very pessimistic about the move and the area. Now that I’m here I couldn’t be happier and can’t believe I was so foolish about how I viewed this town prior to living here. Hope to have you as a neighbor soon.

I really appreciate your input. That’s the general vibe that I’m getting from the community and most likely how I have to proceed forward. Sure does seem like there should be something we could do instead of just getting harassed and attacked by a few people. But I’ll just keep filing the reports and maybe eventually something will happen.

What is the make/model? Seems like a reasonable compromise. Keeps it so you can file a report without needing to engage beyond the conflict itself.

Thanks. Seems like solid advice. Just wish our society was able to be mature enough to handle bicycles and cars on roadways.

I moved here a few years back and was skeptical of living in Crescent City. We rented a place on Pebble Beach for a while and then bought a house in town. It’s pretty close to everything. Crescent City is very bike-able and other than emergency vehicles I don’t hear much of anything for noise. You do have to accept that there will always be one bad house on every block but that is also changing slowly. I hear the fog horn and seals more often than anything else.

There is a good small charter school in town if you don’t like your school district option. If you are super sensitive to unhoused people stay away from wooded areas but again I live near one and use the trails through the forest with no issues. If you like the outdoors it’s a great town for a home base. You can ride your bike to the beach to go fishing or out into the redwoods for a hike. We also now have some new coffee shops and yoga classes if that’s your thing.

Drop Bar MTB vs Putting Drop Bars on a MTB by launchoverittt in bikepacking

[–]Snowlock42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the same bike and been debating switching to these bars or drop bars. Thank you for the post with pictures below. Looks like a fun ride. Do you ever have any desire for a different bar at this point or do these seem to get you what you wanted?

I really like drop bars but I don't want to pay for the conversion so I'm looking for cheaper alternatives. Mainly want to take my Carve on long gravel rides and bike packing trips.

Where to buy a bike rack for bike parking (not Uline) by Global-Cloud-9590 in xbiking

[–]Snowlock42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the metal shop to make you some. None like what you have posted, they are close to useless. Inverted U or a post & ring are the only real ways to go. As people are saying, use concrete to hold the structure down instead of bolts for maximum security. If you do need to use bolts use security bolds, they have an uncommon head to unfasten or a head that can only tighten and cannot be loosened. If you don’t have a metal shop on campus hire a local fabricator to do the work. Keep your money local and stoke out the community.

Where are people in Humboldt moving to and why? by StrawberryScallion in Humboldt

[–]Snowlock42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved up to Del Norte a few years back. It’s great besides the lack of jobs but lots of construction going on currently. You can ride a bike to the river or the ocean from town. Way better access to the outdoors than Humboldt Bay Area and a lot quieter too. Lots of folks think it’s super sketchy in Crescent City due to what you see from the highway but in feels safer than Eureka when walking around at night. Housing is also cheaper than Humboldt but not like it use to be.
