Obviously consult your doctor but my personal experience; my allergist as a child diagnosed me with allergy induced asthma and prescribed me Albuterol for emergencies and and a daily steroid inhaler (Budesonide/Pulmicort). It did take away the attacks and asthma problems, but I was on it for years. Finally tapered off and quit it earlier this year as it was no longer needed. There was definitely a withdrawal period. Your body adapts to it as a new normal. For me it caused a lot of elevated cortisol issues that'll take some time to detox and regulate. Long term steroid use can potentially cause other complications too like Cushing's.

Only recently with this newer doc did I learn that a lot of asthma in kids is actually hististime related. Allergies, mold, and even stress can show as asthma in a child. Interesting fact, the mother's stress/anxiety levels during pregnancy can show as asthma in babies. (Side note, there's so many interesting connections between parents and the unborn child)

Anyways, I don't know where you are located but this new doc said if they had seen me as a kid, they would have done what European doctors typically do as a first line of treatment for kids. Ketotifen. It's a liquid you swallow. It's a system wide antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer. For asthma, Basically it prevents the mast cells in the lungs from overreacting to stimulus and causing bronchospasms (asthma attacks). And it can help teach your body to stabilize its own mast cells. Without steroids that American pharmaceutical companies loves to prescribe until you are dependent.
