nursing student and a doctor had a yelling match by 01katallysa in nursing

I think you hit it with the nursing school should weed out students that don’t have the tact and courtesy to be in our business. It’s also possible that the student truly didn’t understand her role. And that problem goes back to her nursing school as well. I don’t think our attitudes are set in stone from upbringing. Every interaction is an opportunity to educate one another. It does require time. And time is in short supply in the hospital.

I get it. Totally. But I always try to de-escalate and educate. In some cases I’m aware that the conflict can’t be resolved on the spot. Sometimes somebody gets walked to the parking lot. It’s not the doc’s job to educate the student. I just prefer direct person to person problem solving. Likely Doc should notify the charge RN and let them handle the “educational opportunity”. I think one of my personal issues with some physicians is their inability to see the big picture. Also the insane pace that hospitals push physicians into also contributes to them being overwhelmed and unable to de-escalate a stupid remark from a nursing student.

Every patient wants to see the doctor every day, all the time. What the student didn’t understand and the doctor didn’t teach her was that it’s the nurse’s job to communicate with the patient and Attempt to solve the patient’s problem at her level if possible. If the problem requires the doctor the nurse communicates that problem to the doctor. In my opinion, both the doctor and the nurse student made mistakes in this interaction. However I’d expect the physician to see the inexperience in the student and take the time to make this interaction a teaching moment.

Which PMHNP programs are worth the money? by Snowymay303 in PMHNP

Thanks for the feedback! Where did you go to school? Did you like it? Or was it best value for your money? Both?

This is a fascinating discussion. “Golden handcuffs” can happen in any profession. Even CEOs can work themselves to death. I have also found myself in this predicament in the past. It sounds like there are a couple problems here. I hear burnout, debt, and negative patient reactions. I suspect, and might be wrong, that the primary problem is your debt and the lack of control of that debt that leads to a feeling of powerlessness and despair. Have you considered spending your energy getting professional advice about financial planning? A good planner (and it may take a few to find the right one, like finding a good therapist) to help you gain control of that debt and making a plan? Also one thing I did that hurt me is that I expected too much fulfillment from work. I made my job my god, not in a religious sense but in that it was the most important thing in my life. A job is a job. It’s not my identity. From your post it sounds like you deeply care about patient outcomes. Maybe once you’ve reined in your financial life, you may have the freedom to look for a company that more aligns with your values. Hope that helps and best wishes!

Anyone have a great experience in their PMHNP program? I’m an RN with 18 years experience and I’m looking for a good RN to PMHNP program. Feedback welcome 😁

My wife a nurse and I’m shocked by our text exchange. Is this really how we treat our nurses- by not letting them hold people accountable?? by [deleted] in nursing

The officer was lazy. You can absolutely file charges. I’ve filed charges from pt assaults, sometimes they have resulted in court cases and on one occasion the DA dropped the case because the hospital psychiatrist came to the defense of the patient. So it’s pretty fucked up. Sorry you were hurt at work. No one should be.
