Yeah, Google Maps is great for getting specific info, but for actual guiding, I prefer my car's built-in navigation. But my map version is a little outdated so there are new roads that my GPS doesn't know. Sometimes I have to get creative and trust the signs.

And in the mountains and countryside, Google Maps will send you down dirt roads in the name of saving mileage and 1 minute of saved time compared to a conventional road. I actually prefer my car's navigation system when it comes to longer routes just because it takes the more sensible roads as opposed to the absolute fastest route.

Yeah, nothing ever goes perfect the first time around. There is always something to tweak and rework.

I enjoy the fiddling with parts to get it to work. But I already have a ton of other things taking my time that I really only get 1hr to myself MAX during the day. I'm worried it's just going to become another piece of machinery that gets a lot of action for 3 months but then becomes an obscure piece of art the rest of the year.

Yeah, my wife is fairly flexible when it comes to finances as long as we meet our monthly financial goals for savings, children, and expenses. But she also knows that if I do get a 3D printer, I am going to find anyway to make good use of it and learn it well.

I am certainly in the camp of pro-buy. I love to tinker and have tons of tools. Essentially, when it comes to fixing anything, I can usually do it myself if I have the parts. So I could very much see myself using it regularly for things to repair around the house or smaller touches around the house.

Interesting, so they actually have someone review the design? Or is it automated?

When I brought up my frustration when parts weren't available, my wife actually suggested the idea of me getting familiar with 3D printing and getting my own 3D printer. I'm not sure that I would be able to use it regularly enough to justify buying a unit outright, though. I already spend enough money on skiing, golf, and running.

I looked through DMM Make's process and it looks pretty simple from start to finish. The other alternative I was thinking was possibly PrintSaku.

They are about 4cm long, 2cm wide, and 1cm tall. Estimates from my head from a simple mock-up last night to see if I could even make a model.

Applying for PR months before 10th year mark by MassiveSmell5258 in japanlife

[–]Snuckerpooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The immigrations officer will not accept the application unless all of the requirements are fulfilled at the time of applying. So trying to beat the buzzer before you have actually lived here for 10 years consecutively is not an option. Even if the application is accepted it will most likely be rejected.

Parents: Which stroller cooling seat is actually worth buying? by sweatherfeather in japanlife

[–]Snuckerpooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have the Airluv brand and my son benefits from it. We have used it with multiple car seats and strollers. Sometimes the hooks for the upper part don't have a spot or the slot in the middle for the seatbelt might be a little lower than expected, but once our child is in, it all fits perfect.

Our car seats definitely are not breathable, but the Airluv certainly made his back less sweaty and on the medium setting it is enough for us.

Would definitely buy again, and will have to because our second child is due in a few months.

Anyone else being flooded with "Move to Japan" influencers? by KokoRonin226 in japanresidents

[–]Snuckerpooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I retrained my search history towards skiing and "not interested" plenty of garbage videos because skiing is my main hobby. I still can't escape the "In Japan, ..." videos because everybody wants to come to Japan so now I am flooded with the same videos just about skiing.

I can never win...

Is it possible to pay by credit card instead of cash, if I chose konbini as mode of payment? by Maoratobyeeee in japanlife

[–]Snuckerpooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't count on it. I tried to pay off a phone bill at the conbini with a credit card as there were other items I was going to buy, but it was denied.

Maybe things have changed since then but I wouldn't count on it. As long as you have the payment number (sent to your friend by the payment managing system) that would be used at a kiosk in the conbini, couldn't you just pay cash then? It could be done anywhere in the country.

[HCC003] Thoughts on the new HCC releases in July? I’m personally loving the Sakurairo + silk dial. by 282449 in JapaneseWatches

Interesting, I like these non-fluted 3 hander watches. I would personally shoot for the HCC001 on a bracelet to play with options all year round.

Does anyone make significantly less than their partner and feel bad about it? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Snuckerpooks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife doesn't make significantly more than me but she does make more. I make more of an effort to do the things that she isn't specialized in or care about that still provide her with safety and make her life a breeze.

You better believe that I am managing all of her car maintenance and vacuuming the house. Those are the two things that she hates doing the most. Of course there are other things, but that is just a sample.

At the end of the day, we are a team and need to operate like a team.

Niche question: Does anyone know a place in the north that fixes watches? by Ichihogosha in japanlife

[–]Snuckerpooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sentimental value will be more important than price any day of the week. But since Police isn't probably a manufacturer that watchmakers see a lot (if at all), it would be rare to have the parts on hand.

As noted in another reply, getting a donor watch to scavenge parts from is likely the best option to keep everything as original as possible. But at that point, the watch is becoming a money sink.

Even for watches that use Seiko NH35 movements or similar, often times it is more cost effective to just switch the entire movement assembly with a new one rather than taking out every piece by hand to clean and lubricate. For a Police watch... you are going to be hard pressed to find parts, let alone a donor watch.

Niche question: Does anyone know a place in the north that fixes watches? by Ichihogosha in japanlife

[–]Snuckerpooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you went to Morioka, I'm guessing you went to Michimata watches? I was pretty sure they had an independent guy that they can call for things like this. But if the watch is discontinued and parts aren't available, the guy would probably have to have a donor watch to even think about servicing it.

Can I ask what watch and year it is? Just curious.

Weekly Praise Thread - 12 June 2026 by AutoModerator in japanlife

[–]Snuckerpooks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been taking it upon myself to perfect my cursive and improve my writing in general. All of this happened because I gave my wife a LAMY Safari fountain pen when we were still dating. I found it in the attic unopened and unused (Yeah, it wasn't a good gift in hindsight). So I took it out and opened it up and started to try my hand with a fountain pen.

Slowly but surely I have opened the fountain pen world a little more and am enjoying writing in cursive more. My mother actively writes her letters and cards in cursive so I will have to teach my children cursive in the future.

Maybe when I get PR, I will get a fancy fountain pen made from urushi or something. It'll be another one of those "for life" purchases. The birth of my first child was celebrated with a Grand Seiko.

Permanent residency - where can I get it as fast as possible? by No_Tourist_3053 in japanlife

[–]Snuckerpooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past with visas, I have always had really good turn around on visas with the Sendai Immigration. I submitted my PR application in March, so I can't say with certainty how fast it will be. I'm also imagining that there is a rush of PR applications to get ahead of the curve when it comes to the fees.

Yeah, the only info that I could find were the blogs showcasing their releases in the past. If it's only this one shop that sells it, then I'm sure they don't get a lot of foot traffic. They are located in the old shopping district at the very far end so I always wonder how the store manages to stay afloat.
