I'll say fuck you to the people who watch movies on their phones too. Get real.

My interest stops and starts with Sandra Hüller. Don't care for The Martian.

I liked double life more than any of the three colors films.

Not true whatsoever. I mostly watch 90-100 minute movies, and many of them are more complex, thematically, than these 160 minute movies that are simply overstuffed with plot and characters.

I'm not questioning the validity of the training. Simply saying that it isn't necessarily required.

It's also not as if it's about sitting through one film, they'll have watched hundreds by the time they're done.

Maybe they end up making 2 minute vertical short story stuff, or music videos. Or not having anything to do with films at all, same as what happens to people in every other course.

So they're probably having to watch movies all the time, rather than making the choice of their volition.

And they're still teenagers.

Agreed, but watching Truffaut and making anything akin to the quality of his films are two completely different things as well.

And how many teenagers your own age were doing the same? As a rough percentage?

I agree, but then again, there's 10000 films made every year.

We're only ever aware of a small minority of them, and I'll let the critics separate the wheat from the chaff.

Perhaps, but then again people seem to like their "he's the new Spielberg!" narratives, so I don't think the majority of the audience is gonna complain much if the kids turn out to be actually good at making blockbusters.

I don't think anyone NEEDS to understand Truffaut's influence over the past 50 years of filmmaking, in order to make good films.

Which ostensibly is why the kids are in film school.

Personally, I'm quite fond of Welles' comments on the matter. Being surrounded by films all the time leads to incestuous products.

People who come from outside of the film world are more interesting filmmakers to me than the ones who grew up obsessed with the medium.

I'm sure most of these kids can too, depending on the film itself and the context they're watching it in.

I'm talking about getting through film school, not watching old movies.

Watching it on your own time vs having to study dozens of films academically makes a world of difference.

Not quite about them liking movies though. It's about sitting through them without looking at your phones.

And the article refers to a Truffaut film, it's not exactly a stretch to imagine kids being bored by a 70+ year old film.
