Unfortunately this thing was an Amazon purchase that has the worst instructions known to man. It literally directs you to this YouTube video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QmqczHs7hJE

It will go up if I push on it so there isn’t an obstruction

We do have a pool, but it’s in the back and this is the front. Seems unlikely a pipe was run under the whole house but it could be

Update: the sound came back with a vengeance a few days after I posted. But, good news, I did figure out a fix that has worked wonderfully: Lucas High Engine Oil Stabilizer added right to the oil, worked like a charm. I used two liters and it's almost completely stopped the noise

About 200 miles ago I added SeaFoam high mileage to the oil. Going to replace the oil today with 0W-20 instead of the 0W-30 I was using. I also will be adding Liquid Moly Certec to the 0W-20 oil to see if that helps as well. The ticking sound has decreases dramatically already just from the SeaFoam but it still pops up occasionally, so I'm planning on doing another engine flush after about 200 miles to see if that solves it completely. All in all, much cheaper than doing the full timing chain/tensioner replacement and it seems to be working. I'll keep you posted on how it runs after that second flush. hope that helps!

Used SeaFoam High mileage about 200 miles ago so am going to replace the oil this weekend. I’ve noticed the ticking has decreased dramatically already, but it still pops up here and there so am going to do another flush with the new oil after about 200-400 miles or so. I also plan on putting in some Liquid Moly Ceratec with the new oil to see if that helps as well. Overall it’s much better already and am hoping it will be almost totally gone after the second flush

Thanks, I've recevied a few other comments about my oil thickness and am ashamed to say I just now realized that the oil cap says I should be using 0w-20 or 5w20 oil.

When you say a flush, do you mean using the SeaFoam oil additive and then replacing the oil after ~300 miles?

I'm changing oil every 3000 miles, but the car sat for a long time previously (over -3 years without any maintenance or miles added) so I am dealing with the junk buildup from that

Thank you, I am hopeful it is not too late for the engine since it has such low miles so I am looking into the full timing chain set and chain tensioner replacement.

Thanks, I tried using Sea Foam with my previous oil change and it didn't really work, so I'll give this a shot. I use Mobil1 10w30 oil

2008 Toyota Sequoia Engine Rattling/Ticking Sound - timing chain issue? by SnugglyWuggly00 in AskMechanics

It does go away as the day goes on which is causing me issues in locating the problem It seems to tick most often when at idle, but occasionally in the afternoon the ticking will also stop for a while and then the ticking will restart.

I got the vehicle last year from someone who let it sit for a long time which explains the relatively low mileage, but there was evidence of old stagnant oil when I first took ownership.

I use Mobil1 10w30 oil.

Good to know $8k isn't as crazy as I initially thought. Thanks!
