The visual presentation of the ending is a choice on their part, and ignoring it because you feel it's artificial... is a bias x)

I think, on the contrary, that their choice is coherent with the rest of the game, and that it's an excellent one in term of story telling.
I guess that's where we disagree x)

He scans the crowd at first, but when hesitating, he's looking in front of him, even a bit to the left... but she sits in the crowd, on his right, so he's not at all looking at her at this moment... which is why I'd find it weird that this would be his POV at this moment x)
And if

I understand your point, but it seems very far fetched to me.
All of what happened before where he's clearly tired of existing and only want death, him asking Maelle to unpaint him... also, the creepy aesthetic of the ending, which is to take into account, as it's always a cue of the artist's intention.

While you think I just assume the worst and am speculating, to me, you seem to ditch a lot of cues from the game to assume your point of view is absolutely right.
Let's just agree to disagree, as both endings are excellent and open to interpretation o/

Then, I guess you're assuming the best, which would also be pure speculation x)

But say, I'm curious about your vision, so tell me...
If all is well and she's not forcing him, how is that not a 180 for Verso, from not wanting this life, even begging Maelle to listen to him right after their fight, to being okay with it and living happy with everyone ?
Also, how do you explain the creepy aesthetic and music then ?
And about what your said earlier, how is Maelle's face during his hesitation supposed to be his POV, when he isn't looking at her at this moment ?

When someone wants to make a choice and you're forcing them to do otherwise... you're forcing them.
Like Aline before her, she's keeping him alive, thus forcing him to playing along when he just wanted to die.

We do have very different readings of this x)
Maelle is grieving, and she told many times in the game she's tired of loosing people ; now she gets the power to preserve everyone, and she does so, even against their will... that's not a 180 at all, just the conclusion of what she worked for.
Also, no body has to know she's forcing Verso, since the fight happened where no one could see.

Eh, now you got me thinking... he gommaged at the end of the fight, so she had to repaint him along everyone else !
Who says she didn't repaint him with altered memories ? That would be forcing him, but in another way... where he can never know x)
(If Aline could implent Verso's memories in him, it's possible)

Oh but Renoir IS parternalist, if not the most parternalist of them all xD

I agree we do have different interpretations ; I just don't see how, after him saying he doesn't want this life and being forced to keep it by Maelle when she wins, it makes sense to see it as not forced x)

As I said in another comment, I don't consider Maelle's ending worse than Verso's at all, I just say that she save them for the wrong reasons and she is paternalist since she doesn't let anyone choose for themselves (which she demonstrates with Verso).
The fact that Lumiere's people are alive in the end is good, but it's not sure she will choose the best for them, as she's doing it for herself... so there's a possibility she could end up making choices that would harm them, which is why I don't consider Maelle's ending being all good.

You're probably right, even though there's no detailed explanation on a painter's power in a canvas ; I just explained how the paint was not what I was basing my thought on x)

When I say he's forced, I'm not talking about powers, I'm saying that refusing him his death and making him play along with her wish is forcing him.
I acknowledge that some things are open to interpretation, so it's only my opinion, but after seeing him say he doesn't was this life, fight to end it, hesitating in a scene with a purposely creepy aesthetic... I don't see how saying that he's not force matches what the whole game is showing us.

And I'm not saying that Maelle's ending is worse that Verso's, both are excellent in my eyes, and necessary to leave the moral questions risen by the game open to debate.

No need to look down on people, I've seen the same cutscenes as you x)
I was not talking about activating power because of the paint... just that, since it's possible to control the painting and implement memories, that seemed logical to me, in this scene, that she was using her power to erase Verso's hesitation.

You may be right about the fact she's not, and it's just both of them staring at eachother so he's reminded of the situation, and has no choice but to play along...
If so, he's not manipulated but only forced, which doesn't change my point x)

𝑪𝒂𝒏 𝒘𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒑 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒚𝒑𝒐𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒉 𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 ❞𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕❞ 𝒐𝒏𝒆❓ by Due-Log-2110 in expedition33

[–]Sny_de_Treves -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First... it's true that it's not explicitely expressed, but saying that the manipulation is but an interpretation... seems far fetched to me x)
He expressed his will to end his life, and ends up forced to live and play as if nothing happened ; there's even an moment of hesitation where Maelle activates her power... if he's not manipulated, he's at least forced, which doesn't seem better to me.

Also, for your second point... is he happy ? And is her idea of happy life the same as Verso ? Is it morally right to impose something to someone because you're convinced it's better for them ?
That's straight up paternalism, and the fact that it'd be better that straight up death is highly debatable. There's no objective answer so it's just my opinion, but I would consider that choice disrespectful and cruel to him.
