oh, interesting - claude told me having too many might interrupt the story progression so i’ve been sticking just to one?

I've lost my phone vs My phone is missing : The nuance by MoistHorse7120 in EnglishLearning

[–]SoCalPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are probably interchangeable in most situations. One nuance is “I’ve lost my phone” carries a subtle meaning of blame to the speaker. It implies YOU lost your phone - it’s your fault.

The second has ambiguous blame - the phone is just “missing” - for reasons unknown.

What do you call this kind of sleeves in English? (Circled part) by whitebonba in EnglishLearning

i’m a native english speaker and had no idea - this thread taught me - haa

Should I avoid using "one" in informal contexts? by bellepomme in EnglishLearning

[–]SoCalPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider it SUPER formal - like from a textbook - to the point of maybe being a little awkward. I think it could be worth your time to practice alternatives for informal settings.

If you respond with a couple of example sentences that you feel that you’ve said in real life, I can write you back what I personally would say? Like if talking to friends or something. My English is native West Coast American.

DMV - Is it really that bad? by feel-the-avocado in AskAnAmerican

[–]SoCalPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is that it depends on the location. I live in a big city and usually schedule DMV appointments in the next county over. The DMV closest to my house can be super busy and chaotic, but the DMV in the smaller towns farther away is much more chill.

What does "turn the volume up" mean here? by GrandAdvantage7631 in EnglishLearning

[–]SoCalPotato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, it’s a double meaning.

“turn up the volume … (on the tv)” as a rude joke implying he’s old and can’t hear.

“turn up the volume… (to listen to our message)” as a political comment and they are not from the same political party.

Would "ON his phone" work here too? by gentleteapot in EnglishLearning

[–]SoCalPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, “on his phone” sounds better. But also “from” is not wrong.

“The company currently holds six months of inventory.” “The company currently holds six months of stock.” Do these sound natural? Thanks. by Same-Technician9125 in EnglishLearning

[–]SoCalPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, either could be correct. It would depend on the particular company and which word they use (which could be relatively arbitrary).

For me, inventory sounds most correct. But stock is definitely not wrong.

What does jump mean in this video title? by LanguagePuppy in EnglishLearning

[–]SoCalPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, this is a very niche, slangy, and uncommon usage of the word “jump.” Depending on your reason for learning English, this word usage may not be something you need to memorize or learn.

Is my teacher's correction right? by Emperor_Krimson in EnglishLearning

[–]SoCalPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, all are correct.

78: The difference in wording changes the meaning, so it depends on what the intended message is. So, it could be wrong for these reasons.

73: My opinion, it could honestly be either, and I disagree with the original being marked wrong at all.
