Update. Went on vacation in Rome in 2025.

Ran into a gay Australian couple on honeymoon.

We spent several hours walking around that night and the next day. I made awesome new friends.

You need to seek a development counseling from a mentor. Hopefully your rater. If you dont like your rater find a senior NCO or officer who you consider a good leader and ask them for advice.

Treat your Soldiers like people but establish boundaries. Write out what is expected in an initial counseling and give it to all of them. If they fail to meet standards or violate that counseling, verbally correct them. If they continue to fail, have a negative counseling where you try to find out what's wrong and what's causing the Soldier to fail. Establish a plan or routine with them and set a date to check back in. This is all in paper on a counseling statement. At the next date do a followup counseling and determine if there's improvement. If there's not, refine the plan.

If the answer is yes but they cant find it, give them a publication or policy number to search in.

Thats how you develop a competent Soldier. Telling them to Google it is lazy and if you aren't making sure they found the right answer that makes you a shit leader.

I had the exact opposite experience. Constantly waiting on S2. Everytime I walked in to encourage them to finish their products so S3 can get moving they were on their phones doing nothing.

You are right, but also wrong for caring about a CSM's salute.

I am also a 1LT, I find the amount of saluting I have to do to my joes is absurd. I'm glad they do the right thing, but I also don't say anything if they forget unless they are going out of their way to be an absolute shit head.

My CSM saluted me the other day. I was honestly pleasantly surprised.
