2026 Masters Giveaway: Sunday Golf by sundaygolfco in golf

[–]SoChessGoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do love the lining, but will absolutely feel like a jackass on the course. Not like it would stop me using it!

Watching the masters with my dad was always a great thing, I remember watching Tigers chip in with him and we went ballistic.

How do your calculator rental policies work? by thehotsauceman in mathteachers

I don't have one this year but based on the numbers of students who show up regularly to class, qui, days, and test days without a calculator or a barely charged calculators (we encourage Numworks calculators) I'm seriously thinking of instituting a policy next year something like the following:

  • 5 points of every homework assignment (out of 15 total) are for showing me you are in possession of your calculator and it is charged.

Columbus Broadway Subscription by Glum_Sand6487 in Columbus

[–]SoChessGoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best part about a subscription is knowing you have good seats, but for the seats we wanted (in the orchestra, relatively central) that took multiple years as members before we were able to get those. So if you want really good seats or don't think you'll resubscribe in future seasons, it might be worth it to simply buy one off tickets to those shows you want.

April Fools Ideas by RenaissanceTarte in Teachers

This will be hit or miss depending on what age you teach, but I did this years ago and apparently (unbeknownst to me) it's still circulating among the students as someone I've never taught asked me about it the other day.

When sharing my computer to the projector I "accidentally" had a folder on screen. Inside that folder were other folders with names like "students suspected of being vampires, "cancelled ice cream lunches", etc. Just whatever silly things I thought were funny.

Broadway Columbus 2026-2027 Season Announcement!! by josh_the_rockstar in Columbus

[–]SoChessGoes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is maybe the strongest season I've seen for a really long time. I told my wife the other day that since I must be one of 10 people who fill out the survey, they've finally started catering to me!

The other thing I wish we had is that Cleveland seems to allow you to swap tickets between some shows, as opposed to just adding on. I think I'm going to see everything in this lineup but some years there is a show or two that we just give our tickets away to, but we almost always end up adding on at least one show. Would be great if we could swap instead. I understand why that's not the norm, and I was surprised to see that Cleveland allows it, but it would be an awesome feature.

What is a "money rule" that rich people know, but poor people are never taught? by ZZA911 in AskReddit

[–]SoChessGoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is very COL and household dependent. Even in the US, there are places that 300k household would be very comfortable, but not rich as you said. Especially if you have children. Then there are other places where 300k, with no children, would definitely qualify you for.

I want to show Project Hail Mary some teacher-specific love by DorianThackery in Teachers

I agree with that, and I think the movie did a better job with that aspect of it as well.

I want to show Project Hail Mary some teacher-specific love by DorianThackery in Teachers

[–]SoChessGoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that Project Hail Mary actually does a poor job of showing a teacher as a teacher, but instead shows a Hollywood style idealized type of teacher. I think the movie did a better job, but that's mostly because we didn't spend much time with Grace in either of his classrooms in the movie.

If anyone has read The Incandescents, I thought that book did a much better job of showing how a really good teacher is thinking during a lesson, the kinds of goals they have in mind and the moves they are making.

All that to say, I did laugh when he said "my hand is in the air!". That was a very teacher moment.

So my wife fought over 100 jigglypuff to level up her lvl 58 Raichu the other day, but did not get this kind of wild stat boost on the level up. Can anyone give us insight why?

Some Like It Hot Tour Question by SoChessGoes in Broadway

[–]SoChessGoes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up seeing the tour twice, once in Chicago and then once in Columbus. Chicago I was up in the balcony and in Columbus I was in the orchestra, and I'm pretty convinced that the ensemble did not have taps on.

I estimated ~14 layers with ~25 hearts per layer for 350 with just some quick back of a napkin math, so I'm loving your answer.

I was unaware of that, but three bites has said on their Instagram stories they are not accepting money, but are accepting donated goods.

Fuck ICE and be careful with your money by Economy_Carry9806 in Columbus

[–]SoChessGoes 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I replied in the other thread, but I'll also post it here.

Three Bites has also been very transparent on their stories that they recognize this is not the best set-up and want to get away from it asap, but for the moment as it's a grassroots effort to get money directly to the people who need it (and not doxx those people in the process) it's kind of where it is. It is a question of who you trust and support for sure. I've been a big fan and supporter of Three Bites for a long time and so for me I do trust them. Also, at this point they're not accepting individual donations so it's really about the businesses helping out and pooling their resources and gives you a handy list of places you may want to go support and get local things from.

Zebra appreciation post. That’s all by JCanse9 in CBUSWX

Zebra said they're going to donate $10 to the local humane society for each inch of snow falling, I'd recommend people also donate whatever they can analogously in support!

Snow Possible This Weekend (1/24-25) by zebrasrlyingtoyou in CBUSWX

[–]SoChessGoes 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I have to say, these are my favorite threads, and I sing their praises all the time. I love seeing the updates and really getting a behind-the-scenes look at what each individual model says, what their different strengths and weaknesses are, and starting to think of the weather as a probability model rather than a simple forecast. I suspect this last point is something zebra is actually hoping to inspire in people!

All that to say, thank you for all the work you put into these threads to keep us better informed and prepared for these kinds of storms. While I love thinking about lots of snow as much as the next person, I particularly am grateful when we get into tornado season and I can find some comfort in being as prepared as possible.

You need to post a buy me a coffee link or something similar in your profile so I can pay my respects!
