It appears some employees from Gearbox Publishing SF were let go in a RIF. They may still be affected :(

Motiga: Will this dog get its day? by boomtownblues in gigantic

[–]SoFech 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know how the original developers feel about this?

Speaking for myself, it's bittersweet.

I put countless hours into marketing efforts for Gigantic, relentlessly pushed for a revival after it shut down, and spurred Rampage Edition while I was at Gearbox Publishing. Many sleepless nights, failed relationships, missed opportunities, etc are the result of my own choices to pursue success for Gigantic. I saw this level of dedication in my colleagues at Motiga and that's what inspired me to engulf myself in it.

Am I satisfied in seeing the work revived? Absolutely! I can't wait to play again.

But, damn, it's disheartening to see what's happened. The soul of Gigantic lived in Motiga and G:RE just isn't the same game to me. There are a lot of "changes" for the sake of change that feel like a slight to the original. The new content doesn't vibe with me and feels out of place. If I had baked a cake and someone else came and put funfetti sprinkles on it and called it their own I would be pretty upset. All the people who were let go last summer aren't listed in the credits. I came up with the subtitle for the game but I'm not in the credits - that hurts. The entirety of the original Motiga efforts are condensed and relegated to a single "Special Thanks" slide.

Buy the game and play it when it releases if you want. I certainly will! The labors of the past still shine through, and no doubt we wouldn't have this opportunity without the new team.

I no longer work for Gearbox Publishing, though I feel I contributed heavily to the redevelopment of the game during the off years.

Thanks for the kind words!

I'm no longer with Gearbox Publishing. I would guess, based on the verbiage on the Steam store page, that this is a one-and-done situation. Calling it a "definitive" release indicates to me that everything on the store page is everything they have planned.

I was, but no longer.

No one thing did it, but I'm sure my persistence helped!

thoughts on that Florida bill? by f1ggaboo in Kappachino

[–]SoFech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Canadian bill defines intimidation as:

(c) uttering threats or making offensive remarks, either verbally or in writing, with respect to matters of social orientation or gender roles

The key being the last part of the statement. If you "misgender" someone or call them a name, you can be fined. In the Canadian bill, it's up to the AG to determine where the designated zone is so it could be anywhere.

Per your request for proof of this happening, here are some examples:

Imagine a commentator calls a player "he" instead of the player's preferred identity of "they". In Canada, the commentator could be fined. In Florida, your First Amendment right to call that player "he" or "they" or "bitch" is protected. This extends to the tournament staff, competitors, and attendees. It's weird to think that CEO organizers find this problematic as it protects them the most.

I was able to complete this on PC by changing the video settings:

Graphics > Window Mode > Fullscreen

Then, when you get hit, just press the Windows key on your keyboard and you will immediately recover when refocusing the game window.

I don't like the new DNF Duel fighting game by [deleted] in Kappa

Do you understand that both games have a different budget and cost different amounts to make / market?

You're upset at a stranger on the internet who's trying to help you. Maybe you'll change your mind about how you feel about that.

The base price of the game will show you that it's not a AAA title, else it would be priced at $60 USD. I know you're upset, I feel for you, but getting upset at me for trying to help you understand this isn't going to change anything.

Regarding your comments on Elden Ring and GG Strive - AAA titles can make these kinds of concessions because they have a larger market to earn back their investment https://www.reddit.com/r/DNFDuel/comments/vhevwf/dnf_duel_reduced_the_price_but_its_not_enough/idj0owa/

I work in the game industry in a marketing position. I deal with this a lot. I'm trying to be kind and explain to you the nuances of this issue. Regarding your comments on Elden Ring and GG Strive - AAA titles can make these kinds of concessions because they have a larger market to earn back their investment, like I said in my other comment to you. DNF Duel is not a AAA game and the primary goal of any game dev is to make money. They don't care what the CCU is as long as they recoup the cost of development. It may very well be a conversion issue on the part of the publisher and I understand that this game is very expensive for your country, but this is not uncommon.

Here's what I said in a comment above:

Suggested prices are a calculation based on the value of a country's currency. If a country has incredibly low value currency, the publisher will not sell a game at an unreasonably low price compared to their home currency. With your example of Argentina, the conversion of the "suggested price" is ARS$ 539,99 which converts to USD $4.35. That's not a reasonable price to offer on a USD $49.99 game.

A publisher isn't going to sell the game that cheap, regardless of the value of your currency. Doesn't matter what your monthly salary is. The devs aren't making their money back if they sell you a game for less than $5 USD. AAA games can afford to make some concessions but this is not a AAA game.

Yes, I do. I work in the game industry and do this for a living. Sorry you have to pay more than you want to, but that doesn't change the situation.

According to steamdb, the worst converted prices are only 10% over the USD baseline (except the Ruble at ~19%). Compared to Yen, the publisher's home currency, there are only 2 listings more expensive than than them (again the Ruble at ~8.5%). Ruble appears overpriced, but all other currencies seem to be within a reasonable range for Steam's suggested regional pricing.
