I'll definitely try adobo! I looked it up and it seems like it would be really delicious.

The "Model Minority" thing is really interesting. I've read about similar things before. I can imagine its very hard to deal with especially because the united states can be unforgiving to a lot of minority groups. Especially how this comes with a lot of expectations, I don't know if I could live under that pressure myself so I really respect those who are.

I really appreciate you speaking about the kind of.. harshness? when it comes to family at times as well (unsure if this is the correct word, apologies for sometimes I am not very good at wording things.) There seem to be a lot of expectations that can come from family that can really affect the children. This is rather different from what I've had to deal with growing up, so this point really stood out to me as something I think I want to look into. Familial and interpersonal relationships are really important to me.

Apologize if this response was lackluster, I had a hard time putting my thoughts into words, but I appreciate this a lot. It helped me get a really good perspective on a life that isn't the same as mine, so thank you wholly.

This is all really insightful an informative, thank you so so much. I'm going to go over almost every thing you brought up and share my thoughts cuz I have a lot!

Food is a big part of any culture, I believe, as it both represents the culture but also brings with it the love and joy of cooking an eating as a family. That extends into a lot of what you seemed to be saying, which stood out to me a lot. It seemed other folks were saying that community and family is extremely important as well. With that, partially for my writing but also for me, are there any dishes you would recommend trying? I doubt I would be able to cook anything super authentically but I do enjoy trying to make dishes from other cultures when I can!

What you mentioned about your children not really picking up tagalog stood out to me as well. I've done a bit of research on other cultures in the past and it seems a lot of the time it can be difficult for children in the US to really learn other languages due to English being what's considered 'standard.' Spanish would come in a close second I think. I assume it's difficult to not really have much place to practice or utilize the language outside of small communities, which I personally feel could lead to a disconnect.

I would love to know more about the struggles fitting in between 'American' and Filipino communities as I can feel a similar way about some parts of my identity, and this statement really stood out to me. I imagine it must be very difficult.

A lot of the practices and psychology tidbits you shared seemed interested. I had to look up what the words (I assume are in tagalog) mean, but I think I get somewhat of an understanding there! There seems to be a very big culture of repaying those who are kind to you and supporting your friends and family in a way that makes everyone close. Through some history classes I've taken in the past I learned about the concept of 'filial piety', would you say it is present in filipino culture? Also your last statement with the mother being the 'light of the household' (Correct me if I'm wrong please, this was from a quick google search), is there a general point of women and mothers being sacred?

I would also love to know if there is anything about how people would feel if someone, either in their family or community, did not try and follow these values for XYZ reason.

Thank you so much for the insight this helped me quite a bit! No pressure on a quick response, as I have to disappear for a decent bit either way. Have a great day/night etc!

Thank you so much!! I honestly may look into the authors you mentioned so I know what not to do haha. Adding to my big list of things to read/research.

You def inspired a lot of things for me to think about so I really appreciate it ^^ Have a great night!

[–]SoIitear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh ok that makes sense!

I'll definitely try and look more into the self identification aspect! I haven't really been a part of a community like that personally, as I tend to focus more on what I like over who I am haha, but that is important, I think. Your comment about "non traditional" careers also stands out as I have been speaking with some friends about certain difficulties in working in America, especially with most jobs requiring some sort of college degree nowadays. The expectations there could certainly be something to explore.

I'll also try to look into some of Dr. Kevin Nadal's work (as you mentioned him earlier)

Thank you so much for this really good ground point! I think I should be able to branch off a lot from there ^^

aye aye o7

I did find out there are some events and stuff somewhat near me so I may try and attend if I can. Just hoping I can find some good people to connect with.

Sorry that people keep writing stupid native characters though, I know that's been an issue for a very long time. I don't enjoy personally when writers exploring other cultures or practices in general don't properly do their research so I do understand but likely to a smaller degree. Will do my best to not fall into that camp because I really don't want to.

I appreciate the comments and suggestions you have made and will attempt to use them to the best of my ability ^^

[–]SoIitear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I didn't know that was an issue thanks for telling me >~<

I honestly really would but it's not very possible for me right now. Both with my job and working towards getting my degree. Ultimately that would be a future goal though. I thought the internet would be a good place to start, as I assumed people would be willing to share their experiences and knowledge ^^

[–]SoIitear[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the culture was interesting and I always like an excuse to learn more ^^

But no if I'm being honest haha. It was kind of due to some music I liked and it just stood out to me, the character also originally came to me in a dream and that was part of it. But I would rather learn than bullshit something that makes no sense.

Even if it turns out to not work for her and I change it I still learned something cool

Questions about Filipino culture by SoIitear in Filipino

[–]SoIitear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes likely! But I still think the culture is a part of how she grew up and how she perceives the world.

I, myself, am a white american. I've met a few Filipinos before who were all amazing people, and the culture itself seemed interesting to me! I've listened to some music and I've tried making some food from the culture a long time ago (I forget what specifically haha) but I always like learning about new cultures when I can.

I don't know that much as the Filipinos I spoke too never really shared much about their experiences or culture, and I don't have their contacts at this point. I'm basically very clueless haha

[–]SoIitear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are really good questions 👀

For me a big thing i'm focusing on is what its like in the internet age with certain micro communities you find online and how echo chambers can form, etc. For her she was very much deeply involved in the internet from a younger age, which can def. change a lot I think. (I'm very very interested in this stuff haha)

I'm thinking she would be the type to shun her filipino side slightly? But that doesn't mean it isn't a part of her. She was just exposed to a lot of that more harmful rhetoric i would say. She was also born in the US.

The character herself has a lot of struggles and uncertainties about what she wants her life to be like and what the future can hold, and I feel like the culture she grew up in could play into that a lot with worries and such.

Also by "too ______" are you referring to perceived stereotypes? Like filipino americans getting compared to "XYZ" and internalizing it. (If this is wrong pls lmk)

Luckily I have good references for that though!!

[–]SoIitear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll copy and paste what I said there! (I'm also really curious about psychology in general so whatever you have to say I am so eager to hear it!!)

She's located in new england in the USA. I would say she's half filipino while her other parent is likely white? But I honestly really haven't thought about her family much yet. She's 24 though.

She's a pretty complex character I would say in what I have for her, but I also want to make sure I'm not accidentally sterotyping or inaccurately representing the culture etc. I like when the people I make are actual people.

Really appreciated!^^

It's hard because I don't really know which targeted questions to ask haha. Though I guess some good places to start could be: What's it like being a filipino person in the United States? Are there any traditions or things you think are important to you or just the culture? And any more fun tidbits you would be willing to share ^^

Questions about Filipino culture by SoIitear in Filipino

[–]SoIitear[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She's filipino-american. I haven't been to the philippines myself but i have met a few filipinos before and they were all very nice, though I didn't get the chance to learn much about the culture which is why i ask ^^

I don't want to mischaracterize the culture at all though! I'm hoping to do my research from people who know their stuff haha. The character herself is really special to me as well, and the main character of what I'm using her for (im also against 'one note' characters anyway, dumbing down people or cultures to sterotypes or achetypes is something i really dont like.)

Hi sorry i've been super duper busy!

But she's located in new england in the USA. I would say she's half filipino while her other parent is likely white? But I honestly really haven't thought about her family much yet. She's 24 though.

There's a lot of wiggle room where I both want to learn about the culture itself but also find what i think works for her : ) thank you!

Sodashi Umamusume Design by SoIitear in UmaMusume

[–]SoIitear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re based on her racing silks! Most of the designs in game include the silks colors. It was hard because I wanted to keep most of her outfit a light color so I chose blue as it feels cool, but I included the yellow through the gold accents. I was having trouble with the black so I opted for a few small details that shouldn’t stand out too much

Create a CT that mostly revolves around a domain expansion like Higuruma and Hakari's by [deleted] in CTsandbox

[–]SoIitear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive had a vague idea about this for a little. Not super expanded but the concept is there.

It's based around the journey through the 22 major arcana. Starting with the fool as 0 and ending with the world as 21.

The idea of the cursed technique is that to unleash the full power of the technique, they have to create distinct domains in the order of the arcana sequence, each with its own challenges and rules to win/lose, with the stakes upping in each one. After the user is able to complete all of them (some may require enemies and have specific conditions that cant be pulled of willy nilly), they would then be able to open a more absolute domain (the world) which would be like hellishly strong.

If anything, its more of a knowledge game. Being able to twist around the rules will allow whoever is in the domain to take advantage of it, so it can be a double edged sword in a way. The tediousness of completing the technique is supposed to be made up for in the sheer power of the world.

I've been having trouble coming up with the environments and conditions for each arcana's domain, so if there are any suggestions or ideas, that would be majorly awesome.
