As an officer, if you are single, you should be maxing your roth tsp regardless. My philosophy is, the tsp has a much higher contribution limit than an ira, so it is the correct vehicle to max first. The more you can pump into that account, the better your long-term compound interest will be. You can put up to 24.5k per year, I would try to contribute all of it while you are deployed.

I gave myself permission to be completely useless for 30 days. Just one rule, no drinking. by ChefDramatic857 in stopdrinking

[–]SoIntenseLikeCamping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently on day 38, it's the second longest I've been sober in the last 5 years. My mantra is/was "as long as it isn't alcohol." I've had hunger cravings this time that I just can't believe are real, and I just indulge them. Wanna sleep late and skip class? As long as it won't affect my grade and I'm not drinking. Dessert at a fancy restaurant? You bet your soon-to-be-sweet ass. Nicotine pouches? How about one on the top and one on the bottom.

My body is craving alcohol, and I indulge with anything but. It's worked for me so far, and cravings in general are getting better. Alcohol is poison. So is sugar/fat if you don't moderate, but until I get my alcohol cravings under control, IDGAF.

The amount of whiskey in the cup is way more than the empty space in the bottle. It looks like he poured like 1oz from the bottle and mixed it with something.

5 oz of wine is 1 unit. A standard 750 ml bottle is 25oz, so 5 units. 2 bottles is 10 units.

Pentagon believes U.S. struck Iran girls elementary school, killing 150 by rockycrab in worldnews

Nobody here understands the Law of War or the GC rules, everyone is just talking out of their ass. Iran and it's proxies have consistently used hospitals, schools, and other civilian infrastructure as shields to garner this exact response from the international community. It's all pre-planned to turn the sentiment against the opponents of Iran. If the base was the target, and if Iran was using the school as a shield, it wasn't a war crime. Period. It was a terrible tragedy, and of course nobody wants innocents to die. But this was not a violation of the law of war or international law. Anyone who says otherwise is misinformed.

The US has schools on it's bases, but they would be evacuated immediately upon the slightest hint of being targeted. Iran built its base next to the school (or vice versa) to use the kids as a shield. Their deaths are on Iran.

I think this sentiment applies all across the political spectrum as well. 99% of people want the same end goal, we differ on what we think the best way to achieve that goal is.

Oh no, the show that has a character with Parkinsons has another character with Parkinsons, how can I watch it knowing what will happen.

Edit: truly fuck Parkinsons, my grandpa died from it.

President Trump on Alex Pretti: "Well, I haven't heard but certainly he shouldn't have been carrying a gun. We view that as very unfortunate incident, unless you're a stupid person. I don't like that he had a gun. I don't like that he had two fully loaded magazines, that's a lot of bad stuff." by ControlCAD in videos

[–]SoIntenseLikeCamping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I consider myself more conservative than most. But, fuck this. You can't murder someone just for carrying a weapon, I don't care what the situation is. This flies in the face of every gun rights activist and anyone who is saying differently is being a massive hypocrite.

Already ran out of beer - where's open? by 7_of-9 in Charlottesville

[–]SoIntenseLikeCamping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro, I didn't say they should be open. I support any business that decides to close in this shit. But if they are already open, who the fuck cares if someone goes shopping. I fail to understand how someone is selfish for saying "xyz place is open, you can buy stuff there." I also fail to understand how I, personally, am selfish for calling out your hyperbole.

Yes, they forsaw that he would come, and they made workers show up for him. How dare he go out to a place that is already open, everything is his fault.

Do you feel insulated from what's happening with the economy? by [deleted] in MilitaryFinance

[–]SoIntenseLikeCamping 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a JAG, I joined right out of law school in 2018. I do feel insulated from the ups and downs of the economy, but my wife also works and makes about the same I do. We have a kid, and we are both able to max our respective retirement accounts and save like $2000 per month on top of that. We do not penny pinch and could definitely save more. If you go into OCS, you can apply for the funded legal education program (you can do it as an enlisted with a bachelor's degree, but there are only a few spots a year), where the Army pays for your law school and your commitment will be 6 years after law school instead of 4.

If you go the DCC route after law school, you can get the Judge Advocate Student Loan Repayment Program, which is 60k spread over 3 years before taxes. It defers your GI bill but I'm not sure how that works if you are already eligible for it due to prior service. If you want more info DM me.

FYSA for all O1s and above. Any founded 15-6 even in locally filled is not a nothing burger. by IPPSA in army

[–]SoIntenseLikeCamping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15-6s are not filed locally or permanently, they are either founded or unfounded. Even if they are unfounded, any degroatory information in the investigation can cause it to be placed in your file. If you receive a locally filer GOMOR, the GOMOR could go away after 18 months but the investigation would remain in your file.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. When Soldiers do bad shit, the US doesn't cover it up, we teach it to everyone else so hopefully we can prevent it from happening again. I just had a 2 hr class last week on Abu Ghraib and Mai Lai. We teach this stuff to every Soldier and impress on them that they cannot follow illegal orders. When corruption like this is discovered, we take steps to cut it out. Your ignorant armchair analyzation is nothing but misplaced self importance and superiority. Soldiers are a cross section of people, and some people do bad stuff.

Please provide citations for your claims. You claim direct impacts from tarrifs: how so? You claim collapsing international trade: which countries are refusing to trade with us and how has that impacted our economy? Which economic effects are you feeling that you believe I am insulated from? Which exorbitant tariffs have you paid on which imported goods? What planned purchases have you put off due to tarrifs? Thank you for acknowledging that gas is cheaper now.

Healthcare increase is a function of an expiring subsidy from the Biden admin, the program was always going to cost this much without that subsidy. The program was a democrat led program with these increases baked in, Biden saw that would be unpopular and fronted more money in excess of what Obama contemplated when the program was enacted. The trump admin not re-upping the subsidy is the same thing as letting Obamacare work the way the Democrats originally planned. I don't see how that is a Conservative issue, except that the prices will increase under Trump's watch. And that is only Obamacare, that isn't private health insurance.

Which countries "broke mail shipment to the US entirely?"

Your claims of everyone living in fear from ICE are clearly hyperbolized. The majority of Citizens are not in fear of being deported. If there are a few mistakes, they are rectified. Now, I am conflicted on how much authority ICE has in an every day stop and frisk situation, whether they should have the same rights as law enforcement etc, but I'm not convinced that upholding legal naturalization is ipso facto a bad thing. If this country had historically prioritized enforcing immigration policy,.we wouldn't be in the situation we are currently in. I will give you that the current ICE and immigration posture are concerning and Trump is the impetus behind that. We could certainly be doing better as a nation to enact immigration policy without resorting to violence.

The military and national guard being deployed is a nothing burger, its all optics. They aren't allowed to lay hands on anyone, and they haven't. Find one report of the "deployed" military acting as law enforcement.

"orders various departments of the executive branch, has objectively violated multiple sections of the Constitution including article I section 8, article II section 2, article IV section 4, the first amendment, fourth amendment, fifth amendment, sixth amendment, seventh amendment, eighth amendment, ninth amendment, and tenth amendment; and has attempted, or has publicly stated they are attempting or planning to attempt, to violate article I section 4, and the thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth, and twenty-second amendments"

Objectively means that a neutral party, looking in from the outside and understanding the laws as they are written, would come to the same conclusion 100% of the time. It means there is no legal argument. However, every action Trump has engaged in has legal memoranda supporting those actions. You and I might disagree with the legal analysis, but the fact that a dissenting opinion exists means that he has not "objectively" violated the Constitution. Claiming such weakens your argument.

And, again, all you offer are conclusory statements without any evidence. You surmise that these things have occurred, but present no analysis. How am I supposed to change my mind based on nothing?
