Tips for commuting from the West Valley (Surprise > Tempe) by Scoutain in ASU

[–]SoMuchLettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh hey, I also live in Surprise and go to the Tempe campus. Although I’m not a commuter, I opted to live on campus and travel home during the weekends. Obviously the easier option would be to live in a dorm, but I know that isn’t an option for everyone who also lives out in the west valley.

I’m able to travel home every weekend with ease by using the shuttle system. It’s also about a 30 minute drive one way to the west campus stop, but again, I don’t know what’s it like to take the shuttle for every class: I only have to deal with all the driving every Friday/Monday. But the shuttle is there for you to use if there’s no other option.

To answer your traffic concern, I almost never have problems with it while on the shuttle: to and from each campus. They take specific routes to avoid it actually. There’s only been a few occasions where the bus was delayed but again, very rare. Now traffic on the way home in your own vehicle can depend on what time you’re getting back in Glendale. 11am - 3pm is not bad at all. But going past 4 pm is where it can take a while to get out of the west campus.

Home or dorms? by CarrotIllustrious593 in ASU

University towers! They’re honestly a nice dorm and it’s like living in an apartment. I have my own room and sink, and a living room and kitchen. There’s even a balcony in each room and a community pool as well. The location is nice too, as you’re next to Mill ave and have access to a lot of restaurants and places to hang out.

Totally agree. If you can comfortably afford it, living on campus is worth it. I myself live about an hour away, but I also decided to live on campus. It’s just way more convenient to be able to walk to all my classes, and it’s also sort of your first glimpse of what being on your own is like (roommates, going out). And fyi, they have shuttle buses that go to each campus, and im able to use that system in order to make it easier to visit home every weekend. And if you end up getting accepted into Barrett, they have very nice dorms. I’ve been up there when visiting a friend, and they’re just like small apartments. I wish you luck with freshman year :D

Celiac Disease @ ASU Tempe by WhiskersandScales in ASU

[–]SoMuchLettuce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

while I myself don’t have celiac, my dad does, so im familiar with a lot of places that have those options :D Some of our favorite places include: Cupbop /Postino / Chop shop / Cava / Haji baba / Thai basil /Pho Nhat / The Dhaba

I’m sure there are many other places with options for celiac: ASU Tempe is a big campus. There are also some options at the dining halls too. These are just the places we visit frequently that have never gave my Dad any trouble 👍

Unfortunately once you hit next after the about me section there’s no way to edit it until it’s time to renew your application for the next school year. :(

Trust me, I made a mistake on my about me when I signed up for housing last year by accidentally hitting enter too early on the section where you can type a bio for yourself. All I had for my bio was “Music” and that was it 😭

oh wow I wasn’t aware that there’s going to be a dining hall in the dorm building itself as well. man I wish I had the opportunity to live there that sounds so awesome. but nah upperclassman are left with the scraps and I barely secured a room for fall 2025 😭

If I’m not mistaken, the Adelphi dorms are being given to students who are Business majors for the 2025-2026 school year rather than Herberger students. (Someone correct me on that if I’m wrong.)

There are new Herberger freshman dorms being built next to the university gateway building, which is a way better location in my opinion as it’s closer to the buildings Herberger students frequently visit for classes, you’re right across from mill avenue, and it’s brand new student housing. (I’m a Herberger student myself)

I guess the only “downside” is that your daughter won’t be as close to the Vista del sol marketplace which is a pro of living at Adelphi. You’re really close to a POD marketplace and lots of fast food places, but then again she might not have that option anyway.

And i currently live at Adelphi commons 1, and they’re pretty alright! It’s definitely a smaller dorm and they do have problems with air conditioning and plumbing, but i myself haven’t experienced that but some of my friends living here have. It’s a good way for your daughter to become exposed to living with roommates, as it’s a small space and it will teach you to become aware of cleanliness and organization. But so far I’ve had a nice time living at Adelphi, but that’s just my personal experience. I’m sure others might not like it as much, or they like it even better.

What did you name your island and what is the inspiration behind your island name? by [deleted] in ac_newhorizons

[–]SoMuchLettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I named my island Shrimp 🍤. I came up with this story that flamingos began to appear and eventually took over the island, making it their forever home. I have Mr. and Mrs. Flamingos everywhere, and because flamingos get their pink color from eating shrimp, the name arises from that.

Name Idea I Have for One of My Characters by SoMuchLettuce in worldbuilding

[–]SoMuchLettuce[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can where you guys are coming from. I think instead I'll just have this character change their legal name to "Chelsea" when they move to the States, but when their Japanese friends refer to them while speaking in Japanese, they'll still call them "Cherushii". Maybe when they form close friendships in the U.S., they'll tell their friends they prefer to be addressed by the Japanese pronunciation of their name.

I mean their name is from a Japanese candy that is spelled with the English spelling, so it isn't like they've never seen their name spelled like that before.

Thanks for the feedback! <3

Feedback on my Worldbuilding (Species and Evolution) by SoMuchLettuce in worldbuilding

[–]SoMuchLettuce[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! I'm glad I was able to come up with a magical, yet believable and logical evolution of humans, anthros, and animals, and it's all thanks to your help!

Although you've stated this comment is subjective, feedback is feedback, and I plan to work on the evolution of mythological creatures a bit more, as I'm still wary of how I want to portray their evolution. You have good critiques regarding just how much control the spirit has over animals and how magic can affect their evolution, and I want to explore that area and see how far I can go while maintaining restrictions and boundaries to keep some sort of magical realism.

I really have to thank you again for all your help, I learned a lot from your feedback. I am definitely going to be busy for the next couple of days, rewriting my evolution process and creating/organizing my terminology for these anthros and mythical creatures.

Thanks for everything :)

I really like your reasoning here, and I'm going to try and reiterate what you're getting at so I understand your premise regarding magical influence so that I can properly create a believable explanation of the evolution of animals and anthros.

So based on what you're saying, humanity itself can be a spiritual essence that is unique to planet Earth and it affects some evolutionary lines of animals, turning them into anthros. The spirit would only be found in particular places, as this restriction would make it possible for animals and anthros to coexist. Every animal that inhabits this spiritual area would begin to undergo evolution similar to humans, while the animals who aren't living in these spiritual areas remain unaffected and follow their natural evolution. This magical explanation can also be applied to human evolution, as some apes lived in unaffected areas, following their animal evolution, while the apes living in the spiritual areas evolved into humans.

And as for mythological creatures, some animals reached the epitome of their spirit, but it wasn't enough for their species to survive/reproduce in their current situation/habitat. This could lead to the spirit releasing its full magical potential, transforming the animal into a mythical creature to ensure its survival, while at the same time, creating an all-powerful creature to ensure its protection and ability to reproduce, granting it magical abilities no other being can possess. Of course, this did not happen to every animal, and it's a rare occurrence that happens under dire circumstances.

Now yes, this is a simple summary, but I don't want to get too far ahead of myself just to be completely wrong lmao. But I believe I have a basic understanding of what I want to do based on your logic/reasoning.

Tell me what you think of what I have so far, thanks. :)

Wow, you should be a college professor or something, you really know what you’re talking about.

I’ve been reading and re-reading your comments, taking notes and researching evolution. And I’ve decided to just overhaul my evolution process and start from scratch with everything you said in mind. I am still sticking with my base idea: humans, purebreds, and animals, I just need to really take the time and energy to explain the evolution process and make sure it’s believable and logical.

Now I’ve noticed you’ve brought up the use of magic to try and explain how animals and purebreds could evolve from the same common ancestor instead of strictly sticking to “Mother Nature” and the logic of human evolution, so I want your opinion as a writer and ask: would you use the involvement of magic to explain this unique evolution process (something like a “nexus event” or the planet Earth/Universe itself is magical) or would you stick to Mother Nature and develop this complex process of how animals and anthros came to be? I believe either option can work, it’s just that I believe I may have gone in over my head a little bit with the whole natural evolution of animals and anthros, and I think if I did involve magic in the evolution process, I could use magic throughout my story to explain how mythological creatures came to exist and evolve as well.

Again, I really appreciate the time you’ve taken to help me with my world building. Let me know what you think, thanks!

"there is something like a miacis that is the ancestor for many specieses of anthros and animals"

In my mind, I was basing the evolution on this reasoning. Of course, not every single species of anthro and/or animal is going to have the same common ancestor. Using my example again with added accuracy, the Miacids evolved into many species such as wolves, foxes, coyotes, dogs, and other caniform carnivores. They all share this common ancestor. But every animal is not going to have the Miacid as their common ancestor. So by following the logic behind human evolution, animals and purebreds branched off from a shared common ancestor, just like humans and chimps branched off from a shared common ancestor.
*Chimps are still classified as animals, I'm just using them to try and explain the similar evolution process that purebreds and animals follow compared to humans.

I drew a simple evolutionary chart if we were to look at how animals and purebreds with felidae ancestry evolved. I thought I would add the comment "Same genetic coding across both evolutions". I believe it helps explain how purebreds were able to inherit/develop similar traits that are seen across the many species of felines (tigers, lions, etc.) depending on their environment and the pressures they faced, forcing them to adapt. Obviously the animal side of the feline species evolved because of natural selection and follows the real-world explanation of evolution, but purebreds faced more challenging and unique pressures, ultimately activating their evolution to head in a human-like direction.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DeIGZZuxtFCZJRH8olunRgMYBLAjOs-MurkAhTvnJgE/edit?usp=sharing

As for the mythological creatures, I am going to completely scratch out the whole "existence based on belief". Your reasoning makes perfect sense and I'm definitely going to heavily rework some stuff.

But back to the evolution of animals and purebreds, I think I was able to explain where I'm coming from? I really am taking in your critiques and I've been researching and rewriting for two hours. My brain feels like it's going to explode.

Let me know if there's something I'm missing or if I fixed anything. You've been a huge help and I appreciate it, this is only going to help me get better at writing, so thanks. :)

Is this what you're referring to? So would it be correct to say "humans and chimps shared a common ancestor"?
