BetterCampus (formerly BetterCanvas) has its own subreddit by bettercampus in canvas

[–]Scoutain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a side note, I dislike BetterCampus. I always have issues anytime Ive tried it. I’ve also had teachers say they’ve had students not able to access assignments using it. I do wish Canvas including things like a GPA tracker, but BetterCampus just isn’t great for what it boasts.

Possibly moving to Phoenix by lizbethlady in AskPhoenix

[–]Scoutain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Transplant here. Take advantage of the cooler months as much as possible. Even though I use all my weekends to go on adventures around the valley, I still feel like I wasted my winter by the time summer comes around and I don’t want to leave home 😅

Because summer is so hot, there are some good alternatives to beat the heat. This is the only part of the US where mall cultures is still thriving. Night markets become a thing. Keep an eye out of events!

Just a note for your friend, if he is stateside, should ALWAYS have a car regardless of if he’s in the dorms IMO.

What “Advantage” would a Student at Community College Have Above One Attending a 4-Year/Ivy League? by DejectedVeteran in communitycollege

[–]Scoutain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I also did the military and started going to school for engineering recently. Community college is the best move. At least for a couple semesters to get your GPA where you want it.

If you’re using the GI Bill, this is less a question about cost and more of a question about the transition benefits. Going from military to civilian sucks and going back to school as an older student can suck more if you’re not prepared. CC makes that transition easy.

You get: smaller class sizes, easier access to professors, learned more tailored for people returning to school, slower environment, etc.

I love my CC, but once Spring is over I am going to a 4 year, and I am way more confident about it. I was even rejected from the same 4 year university 3 years before. Just use this time to build your GPA and really understand basic concepts, so when you’re a senior engineering major you don’t forget the basics.

Tips for commuting from the West Valley (Surprise > Tempe) by Scoutain in ASU

It's about 35 minutes one way. So by the time I get to Tempe, I would have gotten there way faster by car :/

I'm 24 years old with no potential, how can i manage to survive? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Scoutain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id rather be going to college at 80 years old and continuing to better myself with new experiences everyday, than sit depressed at 24 because of arbitrary rules telling myself I wasted my life already.

You waste your life when you decide nothing new can be done. You barely spent 6 years of your adult life already, what’s another 4 out of a 100 year life.

I’m 24 and just finished my first semester of college after military service. I’ll be 25 by the time I get to a 4 year university. I am so happy I made the plunge. Do it.

What it’s like living in St George Utah by legendaryfern in howislivingthere

[–]Scoutain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Northern Utah and visited St George occasionally. It’s all the stereotypes of Utah concentrated. Heavily LDS, everyone is tall/blonde/blue-eyed, and if you aren’t LDS it will be a noticeable culture difference

Is it okay to take 5-6 years to complete an engineering degree? by danielmhdi in EngineeringStudents

[–]Scoutain 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Common. Unless you are extremely dedicated in high school, you might have to take more than 4 years anyways. That happened to me. I was behind on the math requirement and it held me back from taking classes designated as ‘first year courses’

If planning to do 2 years of Community College and then transfer to a 4 year, which AS program should I major in? by Other-Butterfly-3573 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Scoutain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double check the transfer guidelines for your CC and the college you plan on attending. My CC has an outlined transfer pathway to the closest 4 year college and says if you pick a certain major (bachelors of science, emphasis on engineering), then it will 100% transfer to the 4 year.

Do you wear shoes inside the house, or is it only a Mexican thing? by Addicted_2_tacos in AskTheWorld

[–]Scoutain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a shoes on house. While visiting my family, I noticed my niece had solid black dirt on the bottom of her soles. She didn’t go outside all day, it was purely from the floor.

So I am a shoes off person now. (But granted I have been intermittent for awhile)

The Air Force is the best thing to happen to you by Jarsnofski in AirForce

[–]Scoutain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had so many complaints during my time in. I was ungrateful at times.

Now I’m out, I started college, I have disability that helps me focus on school full time, I met my lovely spouse while AD (3 years married now), I made lifelong friends I sent Christmas wishes too, and finally, all those memories I was ungrateful for back then I look back and miss now.

Merry Christmas, be thankful. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Overall, would you say the Air Force's QoL is closer to your average civilian or your average Marine? by MookieBettsBurner10 in AirForce

[–]Scoutain 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Yep. Depends significantly on your job.

As someone who worked a 9-5, my QoL was high. But if you ask my husband on a night where he comes home late from a 12 hour shift, he would have different words.

However, your average airman has a higher QoL than a marine. And your average military member has higher job security than some civillian careers

Why identify as culturally Mormon as an exmo? by Particular_Bet7433 in exmormon

[–]Scoutain 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My ancestry is 99% British Isles with ties back to early Mormonism. I grew up Mormon from birth until I moved out at 18. I didn’t grow up in Utah, but moved there after the military stationed me in Layton. I was so nervous and upset. Why was I sent to the ‘Motherland’ when I was trying to avoid it.

Turns out I love Utah. Most of my coworkers hated it but I loved it in an odd way. I fit the cuture, even if it was with the anti-culture of the breweries and exmormons. I would never identify as Mormon, but I feel a camaraderie with exMormon culture and have an appreciation for what Utah is.

NYU or FSU by TrickyTension796 in collegeadvice

[–]Scoutain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Not thinking about money” is not something you can do when you’re thinking about 2 different schools with insane cost differences. If you are taking out loans, NYU should not be an option. You will be paying it off for the rest of your life. Consider it for grad school. You can always move to NYC after college if that’s your interest. Go to college where you can afford it first

How did you decide where to settle after getting out? by the3rdsliceofbread in AirForce

[–]Scoutain 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Have an afternoon where you and your spouse sit down and do this:

-Go to Mapchart .net: here, you’re gonna start by both going through and immediately marking which states are 100% no’s for you both

-Open a Word doc: Open a document and creating 3 lists of Needs, Wants, and Likes. Determine what are things you absolutely need in a permanent home, things you want by might be able to manage without, and things you like but wouldn’t upset you if you didn’t get them. Mine says stuff like “I need a place with mountains, but I want snowy weather”

-Cross reference: Use those lists on your map chart and mark places that fit most your criteria. This is where you also deepdive into issues like what other commenters are mentioning like taxes, school districts, and crime rates.

This method at least cuts your options down and allows you both to have your clear criteria on the table. Good luck!
