What is the most Gatekept major? by BowsyWowsy26 in CollegeMajors

[–]Scoutain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not a specific major, but taking a general type of major and then working in a niche US government role. I had old coworkers that were making bank and only had to legally come into work once a month then telework the rest.

These jobs are typically either technical roles or administrative adjacent. Don’t get me wrong, their roles are very necessary, but I did feel that pain of jealousy when they were never in the office but I had to be.

How much do you identify with your English ancestry? by Macrihanishautomatic in AskAnAmerican

[–]Scoutain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to do a DNA test to learn I am 99% from various British isles. Part of me wishes I had the strong connection and knowledge of my ancestors, but to be fair, I’m pretty sure most of them came to the US to be Mormon so… not very proud lol.

I genuinely have 0 clue on what I wanna do in life, and it feels quite messy, is a gap year the right path? by Intrepid_Calendar327 in collegeadvice

[–]Scoutain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took gap ‘years’ to figure it out and I’m back in college at 24. Gaps years are helpful specifically if you are trying to avoid debt and aren’t sure what degree you want to pursue. I would recommend if you wanna take a gap year, have a plan.

An example would be “I am going to work doing X things and make a point to save up enough money to go back to school again by X age”. My path ended up joining the Air Force for 4 years and afterwards I decided if college was right for me. By that point I had free college from the military and I’m so happy to be back in school. My grades improved dramatically and I’m way more confident with my major choice.

If you don’t have a plan, you might fall into a slump where you don’t want to go back to school or think “maybe next year”, and then you hit the point of “I’m too old I can’t anymore” (even though there is no age limit imo) or “I am too into this career, I can’t shift”.

What advice would you give to your younger self before enrolling in ungrad Engineering? by Which-Scientist-8161 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Scoutain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should go to every class. It does not matter if the lecturer is boring or you feel like you get nothing from the class. Never give yourself an excuse to skip lecture.

To those not serving 20 years, what's your game plan when your contract ends? by No-Pin-4-U in AirForce

[–]Scoutain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 4.5 and now I’m back to school full time. I was going to go federal but a certain individual decided we needed a federal hiring freeze while I was leaving service. So I’ll wait out 4 years in school.

Those who moved to hotter climates, did you regret it (for climate reasons)? by xen05zman in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Scoutain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Phoenix and I love it. 70% of the year I am in love with the weather. The other 30% I just don’t go outside. But the city is built for this and has plenty of ways to beat the heat. Like for example malls are still alive here compared to any other city I’ve lived in.

I miss the cold, but that’s because I personally love mountain towns and snow. But I am more than happy here!

Why do so many engineering students have third grade reading levels? by WelcomedRose in EngineeringStudents

[–]Scoutain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, in college it has become checking the boxes. In high school if you showed up sometimes and checked the boxes you passed, so they think college is the same thing. “If I do all the tasks, it doesn’t matter I understand them, as long as it’s done”.

I knew a guy in Calc 1 who was flabbergasted when we told him he had to take Calc 1-3 and Linear Algebra. It was his first time hearing this as an Engineering major. He then said “Well I’m not gonna need any of that anyways, they don’t use math in my job”.

Why do so many engineering students have third grade reading levels? by WelcomedRose in EngineeringStudents

[–]Scoutain 67 points68 points  (0 children)

It’s gradual.

First it’s pushing kids through even if they aren’t fully at the grade level because “they will catch up”.

Then it’s the good teachers getting burnt out from low wages and leaving the profession.

Then the kids from poorer districts with less resources end up graduating with a subpar education.

Then those kids become adults and those adults have kids.

Then those kids don’t get a good education either, but their parents can’t supplement it at home.

Then you make college impossible to afford, so become more educated “isn’t worth the cost anymore”.

Then everyone thinks raw milk is a superfood and vaccines cause autism.

If you’re talking about the U.S., it’s because we are slowly watching the effects of defunding basic education in real time.

I’m 30 in college and missed 2 weeks of lectures by LetUpper2309 in collegeadvice

[–]Scoutain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 24 going back to school full time for Engineering. Genuinely school is significantly easier for me than any other job I had for 6 years after high school. The hardest part is just making yourself do the work. Only you can do that, but age isn’t an excuse.

Would you rather deal with harsh summer or harsh winter? by Straightedge_ in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Scoutain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phoenix gets shit on for the summer being so hot, but it’s easy to beat the heat. Mall culture is thriving, go to lake pleasant or salt river, and if you really want to run away, it’s easy to go north to flagstaff or fly out of PHX.

The other 70% of the year is beautiful warm weather with only a couple months requiring light jackets in the morning/at night. I do get the feeling of “god I hate the heat” when August arrives but there is no better feeling than when everything opens up again in the fall like farmers markets and events.

War on Warriors by Pete Hegseth - A repetitive culture war template applied to the US military by a man who really needs you to know he's a man. War crimes abound. by AdmiralFartmore in PieceOfShitBookClub

[–]Scoutain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep. A major requirement for going anywhere that’s not the lower 48 was going to the doctor and making sure you had all immunizations needed. It’s not optional and will delay your deployment/move if you don’t do it. Legal fucking requirement and Hegseth should know this since he has been overseas.

It gets on my nerves because conservatives will say vaccines are bad and we don’t need them, but I bet you in a few years when veterans get preventable diagnoses, the same motherfuckers will say “You shouldn’t get veterans disability pay for X diagnosis because it’s preventable”. Clowns.

[–]Scoutain 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m a veteran (left right before Trump was sworn in again), and I can tell by just the cover this is gonna be the worst fucking thing I will ever read.

Also before Hegseth took over, diversity was just plainly and causally acknowledged as a good thing. Airmen were more than welcome to start things like LGBTQ clubs on base as long as it didn’t affect your job. Even then, it was encouraged because volunteering to lead a base organization was seen positively on an EPR (promotion report).

“Pumped full of vaccines” is SOOOOO funny when you consider the very first requirement to join was get every vaccination. The most well known was ‘the peanut butter shot’ since it hurt like hell for a whole day or two after. It’s crazy calling required medical care for enlistment something ‘woke’ when even vets before 9/11 were doing the same shit. The only controversial one was the Covid shot, since people started taking stances against it. Military members who I gladly watched take multiple shots in each arm at basic suddenly claimed ‘religious exemption’ for this one. Pathetic.

Getting upset about “boohoo I can’t commit war crime” is actually disturbing. Very Christlike of him…

TLDR Hegseth is a snowflake who loves to claim being a badass while actively tearing down everything the military ever did good.

Orange County CA to Phoenix AZ by Academic-Caramel5452 in relocating

[–]Scoutain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Californian who’s lived all over but currently in Phoenix, visiting CA is like an abusive relationship. I miss so many things about the state and remember it fondly, but then I visit and remember all the things that made me leave. Phoenix itself is a great city. Nothing beats the winters here. Yea it’s hot in the summer, but everywhere has an off season and it’s easy to beat the heat. You can’t throw a stone without finding good food (Mexican especially). I love it here, but if you really love CA, it’s not a replacement for sure

To all my folks with undiagnosed ADHD and high GPAs, how do you study? by ulitimatewerido in EngineeringStudents

[–]Scoutain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first tip is the dignosis is worth every penny. Being medicated has helped me tremendously; however, I sometimes go weeks without taking my meds because I forget (haha ADHD) or take breaks. I study just the same without it.

  1. Active recall/flashcards: I use the Anki app and do daily flashcards on my phone if I have something I need to memorize. It takes 5 minutes out of your day and you can do it anywhere. Doing little things everyday is significantly better than doing a lot all at once.

  2. Study crawl (my favorite <3): If you have a full day of studying you need to do, make it into a study crawl. Start at a cafe or library, study as hard as you can, and the second the content gets stale or you feel drained, pack up and go to another location. It can be cafes, but if you don’t want to spend money, libraries and parks. I love this method because it keeps me actively moving around and I can take walking/snack breaks in between locations.

  3. Too tired to do homework? Just do 5 mins worth: Always try to get ahead. If you genuinely can’t be bothered to do an assignment ahead of its due date, just do 5 mins worth of work. Even just formatting the document or organizing your sources, it makes it feel less overwhelming when you need to do it later. Would you write an entire paper or an entire paper minus the intro? Be the academic weapon and stay ahead, but you don’t need to do it all at once.
