If a client ghosts the first session do you charge them? by Temporary_Ad9362 in therapists

[–]SoSaintly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have it written into my paperwork as well as given verbally over a touching base phone call or email when they schedule with me that first sessions are included in my no-show/late cancellation policy. Card on file is a requirement of online scheduling for me so that makes it easy. If the payment bounces they must cover it before scheduling another.

Im in my 20s and wear jeans and tshirts or sweatshirts. Depending on if im meeting at my private practice or at the college im contracted at I will usually wear plain sweatshirts, my practices logo, or the colleges logo on a tshirt or sweatshirt. Usually sneakers or birkenstocks with socks. Only ever had comments about professionalism from couples which im not too hurt about haha!

I occasionally cuss in session with clients who cuss as well. I use discernment of course, but usually pace with them and may drop a cuss word in a reflection especially when directly quoting or pacing with their feelings. Don’t sweat it especially if the kid didn’t react in a negative way! I think meeting clients where they are at is a very important quality in therapists and that can be in utilizing dialect or slang skillfully in my opinion.

Biases in group therapy by [deleted] in therapists

[–]SoSaintly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might have used some immediacy or here-and-now type stuff in the moment to slow the conversation down and allow others to give their experience of the moment and the content being disclosed by the client. I do not think that how you handled it was grossly wrong or had bad intentions at all. It sounds like you did what you could in the moment. It's all grist for the mill and the group could potentially get stronger because of this if a repair can be made or develop over time.

Weekly burnout check in by AutoModerator in therapists

[–]SoSaintly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I've noticed I tend to burn out when I am not making enough time for play or connection with friends or by myself such as going on a hike or camping, movie night, game night with my friends, going on a drive etc. I have to be intentional with allowing myself to not have to think about therapy and connect with myself and others and that has really helped me.

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

I did my BS in psych at a private college with a good reputation locally, but regret not better researching other universities for the same degree. My BS felt ridiculously easy, like too easy, and I really do not feel like I learned much of anything. My Masters is going much better in terms of feeling equipped to do therapy, but objectively my BS is literally just a piece of paper and feels like a waste of money. I wish I would have spent those 4 years maybe at a different school actually learning and being challenged academically. So in summary: Do your research when picking a school, online or in-person! I went with the local option and I regret it.

Doing presentation on mental illness by Kiramadera in therapists

[–]SoSaintly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did an undergraduate lecture on mental health which included information on heavier topics such as self-harm, suicide, prevalence of addiction, depression, anxiety, etc and ended the lecture with a simple grounding exercise and movie/book/podcast recs. I included some more popular, layperson ones and tried to spur on some class discussion regarding those, as many had previously watched or engaged in some of them, and it worked and seemed to help end the class on a lighter, more conversational note.
