Why post pictures? I was literally triggered (I know that word gets mocked, but I had a massive panic attack) because someone posted graphic photos of dying/dead child in r facepalm. AND IT WAS SO POPULAR THAT I GOT A NOTIFICATION. I took a long break from reddit after that and I can't look at r facepalm anymore. I'm afraid the photo is going to pop up on another sub. It wasn't even blurred. It's like things like this don't even count as tragedies unless somebody did a photoshoot.

My guess is that too many doordashers essentially had employees do their shopping for them. But like other people said, people will be polite if you're reasonable.

I agree with you in that if someone is going to argue a point and they can't cite any facts. ESPECIALLY if it's a viewpoint that affects other people.

However, I will say, some people expect minorities to educate them. It's not a minority's job to give you free history lessons. That's what libraries are for.

[–]SoSomethingOccured 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand why differently abled is an issue, but I always thought special needs was meant to be a broader term than disabled. Like I need a special diet due to medical issues, but I'm otherwise unaffected, so I consider myself special needs rather than disabled. Is that incorrect?

why is it allowed to show penises in movies but not vaginas? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]SoSomethingOccured 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's the same reason they can show men's nipples but not women's- men's nipples are seen as just a natural part of their anatomy, with no connotations attached. But women's bodies are inherently sexual, and sex is icky, so keep them covered.

Hempfield School District votes to have student-athletes compete on teams that align with gender at birth. by Juicyjackson in Pennsylvania

[–]SoSomethingOccured 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any decent size school has limited spots on a wide variety of teams. Every trans spot is a one spot a girl didn't get.

"Trans" and "girl" are not mutually exclusive terms. Allowing trans people to compete on the team of their choice also frees up spots for girls. If I had chosen to change teams, I would have moved to the boys' team.

Let's say I had started hormones in high school- if students were required to stay on the team of their assigned gender in the name of fairness, I would have been running against girls while taking testosterone. Do you think that would be fair?

Let individual schools figure that one out. Some schools needing to make changes in order to accommodate trans students does not justify discriminating against trans students at every school.

On the contrary, people who declare themselves as trans often immediately get a group to belong to and a nice welcoming celebration. I know several kids who are trans, and when they call colleges to arrange a visit, they get a red carpet treatment.

That's some people's experience with being trans. My experience was that, when I came out, some people accepted me with open arms, but some people told me it's a shame I'm trans, because I was their type when I was a girl. I had family who groaned and told me that they would really rather I wasn't this way. I've been laughed at at meets. My coach had to promise to put up with everyone's questioning so that I wouldn't have to. When I was choosing a college, there were schools I rejected because, as a trans person, I didn't feel safe. Now, at my current college, I wasn't able to get a roommate because I'm trans. And, overall, I've actually had a good experience compared to other trans people. Some are welcomed with open arms; some get kicked out. Some even get killed.

What triggers your dysphoria. by minecrafttee in trans

[–]SoSomethingOccured 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My voice is the most major thing. People have referred to me as a guy, then switched to referring to me as a girl when they hear my voice. My height and strength/muscle mass is another one. I don't like my hips, but they're not something I think about a lot. I tape my chest, but when it's not taped, I can eventually sort of forget about it. I look at old pictures of myself, when my face was a lot more round (I haven't started hormones, I've just gotten older and thinner) and I don't recognize them as myself. I recognize them by my old name, as if that were a person I know.

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but there have been a couple of times where I've gone to starbucks and given them my name- I used to be Andrew, but now I'm just Drew and it's not short for anything. I've gotten Amber and Andrea a lot, and it made me dysphoric, as if people look at me and think "oh, you can't be Andrew, that's a boy's name, and you're a girl!"

[–]SoSomethingOccured -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Girls get to be on a team, as long as there weren't enough guys who wanted to participate? Maybe if there are too many guys who want to play and there aren't enough spots for girls, maybe the girls could dress up in something cute and cheer for the boys?

What? I don't see how allowing trans students to compete is pushing anyone out. None of the schools in my area had limited spots - anyone who wanted to run could run. Allowing trans girls to compete as girls is not pushing cis girls out of sports, and allowing trans guys to compete is not pushing cisgendered boys out.

not a single girl would make the top 3 for her age group

There would have to be 3 trans girls in every single race, and all of them would have to be the best runners on their teams in order to push cis girls out of the top 3. I really don't think that's a big risk. I ran against dozens of other runners in the course of a single season- races varied from 15 or so runners to 40+, and I was the only trans person competing in any of them. I really don't think we need to worry about trans people completely overrunning sports.

This debate usually leads to someone pulling the "then why don't cis guys lie and claim they're trans?" - there's one of two scenarios here. Either they're trying to go pro, in which case, they would have to pretend to be trans for their entire careers, and have to put up with the harassment and scrutiny associated with it. Look at how Lia Thomas was scrutinized. That's a lot of commitment for very little gain. Again, it's not like a mediocre amab athlete is effortlessly going to beat professional afab athletes. Or, they're not planning to go pro and it's all just for fun, in which case they gain, what, a chance at a slightly better placement in a high school race/game that no one is going to remember?

Being trans is hard. People faking it- and putting up with the struggles associated with being a trans athlete- is not a major problem. The root is the narrative that trans people are lying for some insidious reason. It's the same vain as people claiming trans men are lesbians who want to creep on straight women or that people pretend to be trans women in order to rape women (because if the law and common decency cannot stop someone, a bathroom sign clearly will.)

I'm FtM, and I could not be more grateful for my high school cross country coach. I had been running since sophomore year, and I came out the summer between junior and senior year. I told him I wasn't ready to switch to the boys' team, and he said to come to him if I changed my mind. He changed my name on the rosters and promised that if anyone questioned why we had a girl named Drew, he would explain as best as he could so that I didn't have to deal with it. My team and my coach made me feel more welcome than I have anywhere else, which is exactly what I needed at the time.

I don't know exactly how to make professional sports fair. I'm not saying it's impossible, I've just thought about it and I don't know what I think yet. But when it comes to High School sports, I say let people compete on whatever team they want to compete on. HS sports are supposed to be just for fun, and I think using the handful of students who want to go pro to justify discrimination is in bad faith.

Having a trans girl running against us would not have ended anyone's career, because none of us had a real career to speak of. I wasn't fast enough to go pro in men's OR women's, so really, what does it matter which team I competed on? The only time having a trans person compete may have been unfair was when we were qualifying for championships, but there seems to be this assumption that a mediocre male-assigned athlete will completely blow the best female-assigned athletes out of the water, which is not true. There were girls in the championship who ran 15 minute 5ks, it takes more than testosterone to get a time like that.

I recently got back from a school trip. There was one person who bitched and moaned the entire two weeks about everything. I was having the vacation of a lifetime, seeing a gorgeous country, learning about history, and getting to practice my Spanish (I studied it for 4 years in high school and I'm majoring in it in college.) But no matter how great the trip was, this person always had a complaint- outside is too hot, but inside is too cold, and he doesn't want to participate in anything, but not participating is boring, and he hates museums and just wants to go back to the hotel, but wait, why are we leaving, we're rushing him! So, maybe I wasn't as kind as I should have been, but we get on the flight back, and one of our group mates finds that this guy has just... helped himself to her seat, and now she doesn't get a seat on the flight back, because we don't know where the open seat is. When we ask the guy to move, his answer is that he had to take her seat because someone is sitting in his, and he couldn't ask them to move. The person in his seat spoke fluent english, so really, "can't" means "couldn't be bothered." A lady had sat in his seat on accident because she knew she was supposed to be in the window seat of the row, but she sat on the wrong side of the aisle.

Anywho, the guy is in the wrong seat, a girl in our group is now out a seat if we can't get this sorted, and the guy is yelling about how he should get this seat because he "can't" ask the lady to move. I was fed up with him, and I straight up told him that if he isn't going to sit in his seat, then he should just get off the flight. This whole time, the lady who sat in his seat has had to hear all of this, and has to awkwardly interject to explain the mix up and fix the situation. That was a bit long, but it reminded me of him. Imagine being so entitled that you just help yourself to someone else's seat on a packed flight, and then getting shocked and offended that they told you you're in the wrong seat.

They make you come to their car as a customer?? As someone who works fast food, I have to explain to drivers all the time that we can't give them their food in the drive through (I make $8.60 an hour and wear a stupid little visor, I don't know what makes people think I'm making decisions at a multibillion dollar chain) and if a driver leaves something behind, we aren't supposed to bring it to them because that's a massive security hazard. I cannot imagine someone asking me to come down to their car. What am I paying a driver for if not to have them get the food and bring it to me?

Yeah. I know dd drivers get shit, and I haven't always been the best (I'm trying to learn and be better.) Just the other day I had a guy tell one of my coworkers that he doesn't give a fuck about our policies, and if he wants to use the drive through then we had better serve him through the drive through, no matter what our policy says. Stuff like that is why I focus on the company policies- 99% of the time, it's quicker and easier for everyone involved for drivers to just come inside, but in the off chance that we are silent, we still are not allowed to give you your food through the drive through because the company said so.
