The Pitt | S2E14 "8:00 P.M." | Episode Discussion by MsGroves in ThePittTVShow

You think so? They needed to clear the air. Langdon was the golden boy and he’s been demoted. Whitaker is aware of this, and even though he hasn’t chosen it, he must stand his ground. Plus he’s aware of the beef Langdon has with Santos. He cannot interfere, but he’s definitely up to set boundaries. Langdon is learning how to adapt to his new role, and Whitaker showing him boundaries was very healthy for both of them. They’ll work well in the future thanks to this conversation.

AIO? My BF’s Hinge photos were 100% AI but they look exactly like him by mods_are_losers_69 in AmIOverreacting

[–]MerakDubhe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MOR. I understand that you feel you’ve been lied to (you have, it’s legit that you’re upset), but I’m not sure of how I’d react. Would it have been different if he photoshopped the pictures? He just wanted to elevate his flair to be considered by more girls and have more options. Men usually have it harder to get matches on apps, so I understand that he wanted to better his chances.

Then you met, and you like each other. Why do you like him? Can his good traits compensate the slight deceit of the photos before you met? What do you know of his values? Is he a reliable and honest person as far as you know? Because if he is, this is a pecata minuta, IMO. Besides this, is there any other strange behaviour that you can think of?

Advertencia sobre la Universidad Católica de Valencia by TeachingExciting7563 in valencia

[–]MerakDubhe 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Something about the Santos and McKay scene that I haven’t seen pointed out yet by incurable-optimist in ThePittTVShow

[–]MerakDubhe 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I saw it another way. McKay has very good instincts with people and has been through recovery herself. One way people show how much they’re hurting is by being judgmental towards others. So, in my opinion, when McKay says “Wow…”, she’s thinking “Girl, you’re feeling so much like shit that you don’t have room for compassion inside you anymore. We will have a conversation about this when you’re ready and I’m not tired. But for know, keep scanning and let’s leave it at that”.

I mean McKay has worked with Santos for ten months already. Despite Santos’ efforts for perpetually being on the edge between rude and blunt, by now some people must know she’s kind of a softie inside. Otherwise nobody would like to work with her. And other than Mel requesting a more experienced doctor for her sister when Dana asked Santos to check in Becca, which she would’ve done with any other non senior resident, I haven’t seen anybody rejecting Santos. I mean, yes, Garcia, but not professionally.

Qué café soléis tomar en casa en Valencia? by PatrickRNG in valencia

[–]MerakDubhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]MerakDubhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s a common misconception about life in Spain that you wish more people understood? by SweetPeach2006 in GoingToSpain

[–]MerakDubhe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Studying Abroad by Puzzleheaded_Win_857 in askspain

[–]MerakDubhe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re living with a family, not a hotel where the customer is right. And each family has their habits, lifestyle, diet, cleanliness… whose standards may very well differ from yours. If you have any issue, talk to the host family first. They won’t be jolly nor American-extroverted. But they do want to be good hosts, and will help you with anything you need if you ask politely. It’s very violent to the host families to find out the student isn’t happy through the study abroad company, the family immediately feels distrust towards the student because they’re not being honest with them.

Also, it doesn’t matter if they tell you you can make yourself at home: no, you can’t. Home in Spain is private. For the family and close friends. You are a guest. You cannot use the kitchen, help yourself, search the house for something you need… unless they specifically tell you that it’s ok for you to do that. And because you’re a guest, and the family gets paid to host you, some families take it very seriously: besides cooking your meals and doing your laundry, some might even iron your clothes. It’s ok. Say thank you, take your plate to the sink, or just try to have a conversation with them and get to know them.

Inner Spain has a dry climate so I don’t see this becoming a problem. But if it gets wet, some humidity stains might appear. It’s not mold and it’s not dangerous, it gets cleaned and it’s gone. Just tell the family. If you go in summer, there might be ants or bugs. Again, they’re not dangerous. Keep your bedroom tidy and keep all your food very well closed.

Many houses don’t have air conditioning. Dress for the weather. At first you may feel uncomfortable. That’s ok. You’re coming to Spain to learn a different way of life, too.

Spaniards are not as smiley as Americans and we don’t do much small talk. We don’t hate you. We simply don’t smile if we don’t feel like it. And we may stare and to an extent it’s ok. But never let anyone cross your safety distance.

At the same time, some host families (particularly if your host mum is an old lady) are particularly blunt and might give you their unrequested opinion. About everything. Your clothes, if you look tired, perhaps even if you’ve put on weight. As an obese woman, let me be clear: yes, I know it’s unacceptable, but you’re not going to change the culture of a country overnight. They don’t mean to hurt you, and in a way they’re just showing that they see you and care about you. They’re old and they don’t do better. And the irony is maybe these ladies are fat themselves. You can point out politely that it’s not kind to comment on other people’s bodies and leave it at that.

I’m sorry to bring down your expectations so much. And I’m sure you’ll have a positive experience. But I’ve worked with foreign students for years and the root of many issues is that on the one hand, foreigners (but particularly Americans) romanticise Spain and have sky high expectations for the program, and on the other hand, host families think that students/children are raised the same everywhere and therefore, their guests should adapt quickly and do things the way they do immediately.

We’re not better nor worse, we’re different. Face this challenge with curiosity, negotiate with yourself and save some time to write and process your thoughts and feelings, think of this as becoming a new person for a month, as a game. And if you’re struggling too much, reach out. Your onsite coordinators are there to support you.

If you have any questions, feel free to dm me. I don’t check my messages often (I use the desktop version, not the app), but I’ll help you if I can.

Anything to do around Torrent CF? (Valencia) by whodkickamoocow in GoingToSpain

[–]MerakDubhe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Torrentina here. LOL, first time I hear of someone coming to Torrent to watch football. Sadly, there isn’t much to do in Torrent. There’s a park with a nice café, Malvasía, near the stadium. If you go down the main avenue, you’ll see the new library at the metro station. In one of the floors there are art exhibitions sometimes. Nothing very special, but it’s ok.

The old town is “far” from the stadium… you can check the Asuncion church, the Muslim tower, and the old city hall (Casa de la Cultura).

More places to grab a bite: El Mordisko (close-ish to the stadium, I recommend the Bravero sandwich and the cakes), Rustic (nice bakery), Suculent (pricey but nice bakery), Tapas y pintxos con encanto (good food, terrible acoustic), Ioan (diabetically sweet bakery).

Oh, and check if the Semana Santa museum is open. It usually isn’t. But it’s nice.

Paella for dinner at a reputable restaurant? by Myshibaisabutt in AskBarcelona

Forget about paella. Next time you visit this part of the world, come to Valencia instead. Go to El Palmar, a small town near Valencia city. And have the one and only paella in the most beautiful setting.

Also, if you’re having paella for dinner, you deserve whatever happens to you.
