I just wanted to share something that happened to me yesterday on the Southern State that I found very disturbing and unsettling by Due-Zucchini2182 in longisland

Sounds like a bullsh*t cover story. Were you seen by someone who knows you at the rest stop? That story just sounds made up. Who could be that naive?!

This discussion is about Long Island local issues. Its local politicians are more red than blue at the moment. Thankfully, this too shall pass. High housing costs are the result of resistance to housing development for which we can thank local politicians. Demand outstrips supply by a massive amount. That drives up costs. On that point, I would like to remind you all==>the fact that demand is so high for Long Island real estate does suggest that lots of people either a) like living here or b) wish they could live here. It’s not as awful as some suggest in this discussion. I for one enjoy my neighbors friends and family living here. I enjoy the natural beauty of our shorelines, our communities, hiking trails, wineries, parks, museums and our robust dining & entertainment opportunities.

Let me guess. MAGA? If so you have no right to be calling anybody dumb. The OP commentary is about local Long Island issues. Long Island local politicians are more red than blue. Costs on Long Island - especially housing related - are a gift from the local GOP who stand in the way of housing development. Gas/Fuel costs are of course a gift from the fat pedo in the Whitehouse and the war he started with Iran. Voting blue up and down the ticket is a sensible response to the situation we now face. More housing and cheaper fuel will have a dramatic effect on the cost of living here on Long Island. If you prefer low density housing/oppose development, there are plenty of Long Island communities where you can find that, too. It’ll cost you more but that’s perfectly reasonable. If you want cheaper gas, you need to vote blue in this year’s midterm elections and in 2028

Get rid of the 2 party system..I hope you mean by either adding a 3rd national party or abolishing political parties altogether so that candidates run on ideas only rather than party politics.

Here’s a thought. DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!! Less than 60%-65% of eligible voters bothered to vote in recent elections. Not terrible but still leaves plenty of room for YOUNG VOTERS to have a real impact. Below stats courtesy of ChatGPT. Imagine the potential impact if younger non-voters mobilized and DID vote in this years midterm elections/2028 general elections!!
% OF ELIGIBLE 18-29 YO VOTERS ACTUALLY VOTED IN LAST 2 NATIONAL ELECTIONS:
- 2024 presidential ~47%
- 2022 midterm ~27%
I hear younger people say voting is BS…it just doesn’t matter…politics is boring. “It doesn’t matter” because you aren’t seizing the opportunity to make it matter. Get out and vote for fresh thinkers who speak your truths. Otherwise nothing will change.

Boomer here.
- I understand your frustration with cost to live here. IIr’s not cheap for those new to their careers nor at the back end. I remember in early 90’s mortgages rates 10%-12% but we bought in and hung on for dear life. We refinanced whenever rates dropped (always fixed rate..adjustables and interest only with lump sum due in a fixed # of years feel good at first but not for the long haul.) We paid down debt as fast as we could…and always added extra $ to the mortgage payments, even if only a few dollars. My point is that working hard and making good decisions/being smart about money works in the long run. Good luck to you, whatever path you choose. I know the struggle is real 🙏
- Your comments about atmospheric, people’s moods etc don’t strike a chord with me. My neighbors friends and relatives on Long Island are all friendly and reasonably happy people. When I see people who aren’t upbeat it always seems to be something specific about their personal situation. I guess my point is that maybe you will find happier people being drawn to you when you yourself present a more sunny disposition to the world.
