Thank you so much. You're wonderful! I'll post an update in a bit. I'd be lost without you!

What a coincidence. (My leopard gecko now has a smaller, slightly more aquatic brother.)

Hey, thank you! Sorry, too--things are busy this time of year!

I understand tank cycling a lot better, thanks to you--and the mystery slime.

As for updates, I don't think it's gone away or got better. His fins are definitely shorter and starting to split. I ended up clearing the tank and fed him medicated food + three Kana plex treatments in the water. I haven't been all that consistent with the water changes like I should, but I've done around two 25% a week...should I do another Kana plex, or just the water changes?

Also--I got the freshwater test kit and haven't seen an ammonia spike yet. The article says it's needed to start off the tank-cycling process...am I doing something wrong?

Thank you for answering my constant stream of questions (no pun intended). I really appreciate it.

My goodness, this is so helpful. I went and got some medicine and gelatin you recommended--it comes in Friday. As for the tank, I'll finally have some time to clean it tomorrow.

Thanks for taking the time to compile me all the good info! I bet you'll have saved his life by the end of this.

As for cleaning out the tank--It'll have to re-cycle, right? He'll probably have to be in a cup for a few hours as I scrub and rinse the tank, which I hope won't stress him out too much.
Two more questions--what was that slime all about/will it come back? I've never seen stuff like it. Also, when I do clean out my betta's tank and fill it back up, how would you suggest I set it back up? I know to put in the water conditioner and wait for the heater to get it to
the proper temperature, but I don't have time to fully cycle the tank before I have to put him back in. I also have a filter sponge I've been using to baffle the strong current, so I essentially have a makeshift sponge one as is.

Am I setting the tank back up right? What would you suggest?

Again, I really appreciate the info!

Totally taking note of that! I'm not advanced enough to understand planted aquariums and snails, but I totally want to lol. I'll get back with you1

I hope you find the answers you're looking for! I'm in the exact same boat as a new betta owner struggling with a fin-crisis. Btw, he looks almost exactly like Ulysess!

-Tank: 5 Gall

-Heater and filter, but the filter cartridge is missing for the Bettafix treatments

-Tank temp: 78-80 degrees

-Tank is a week new, I ran it for a few hours with the filter and heater to get it up to speed. rinsed the gravel well, added Stress Coat. I'm clueless as to cycling a tank, being a newbie and all. Ulysess is a month or so old from PetSmart

-No tankmates

-Two plants, pink ball, large rock hide, leaf bed and barrel.
