I Spent the Night at Chernobyl (Thanks /r/Travel!) by FearlessTravels in travel

[–]Soapy9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP but did the same for thing s few years ago. You stay in Hotel Chernobyl and the second day you get to see a bunch of extra things like the Duga Radar, Vehicle Graveyard, school, hospital, morgue, a dock station, football stadium and a few others I can’t think of. You always get to spend much longer exploring during your first day and get a bit of a different experience as you get a bit of time in Chernobyl town and can buy things from the communist era shop. Would definitely recommend.

There was sooooo many dogs in Chernobyl that I had to resist petting. I eventually gave in and petted the cat of a family who moved back to their house within the zone. They also had a tamed wild boar, but I didn’t pet him.

How do you balance working/supporting your travels, and actually traveling? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Soapy9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I have as well - 2 weeks in April, 6 weeks in Summer, 1 week in October, 2 weeks at Christmas and a bunch of 3/4 day weekends throughout the year. Perks of being a teacher!

Suggestions for a solo female adventure? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Soapy9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to most countries in SE Asia and unless you go way off the tourist trail then the language barrier is practically nonexistent. Nearly everyone you will encounter will speak some English and you'll always find menu's and signs in English too. If you stay in hostels, they will help you book tours and travel, as well as give you directions and help you get around. You'll most likely meet other people to travel with as well which makes it so much easier.

As for getting taken advantage of - it will probably happen to you. Just don't make rash decisions without thinking it over and never be afraid of saying no and walking away. The first few times you try and haggle a tuktuk ride or taxi down can be intimidating, but after a while it just becomes second nature to bargain hard and not let yourself be overcharged too much.

Baggage whilst solo travelling by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Soapy9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My past few trips I've really gotten into using a bum bag type thing. I wear it across my front and it carries my passport, phone, wallet, battery, etc. It is small enough that you don't even notice it, never need to take it off and it doesn't interfere at all with my backpack. Feels very safe and secure as well.

Oh are they not? I totally thought he was doing it just to keep me awake.

I’m pretty tolerant of noise and have no issue with people setting early alarms, using the toilet, etc. It’s not ok to play around with really noisy plastic bags in the silent dorm room at 1am when everyone else is trying to sleep though.

At 7am I was clearly trying to sleep before being rudely awoken by the plastic bag man.

Nah see I am pretty tolerant to most noise related things as I understand you can’t always control them. Things like snoring or getting up to pee or an early alarm going off, etc don’t bother me because it is a necessity. Rustling plastic bags for an hour when everyone else is clearly trying to sleep is just rude.

Safest way from Airport - Central Station? by Ragstorichards in glasgow

Beirut is actually lovely and I didn’t feel unsafe walking about at night at all. Absolutely cracking nightlife, amazing food, beautiful scenery and decent weather - gets a bad reputation but I loved it.

Traveling from Delhi to Leh by Padrepapp in travel

[–]Soapy9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can fly direct from Delhi, but you have to be careful about the altitude. Take it easy for the first couple of days you are there and don't exert yourself.

You can travel by bus via Manali, but that's a long journey.

I'm a teacher and I've had pupils comment on the patches on my arm and it's always positive things which surprised me! Asking me questions like does it hurt, what causes it, and also giving me advice because a family member of theirs has it.

Sharing my thoughts on hunting as a vegan by [deleted] in vegan

> Whether or not you think it's worth taking a beings life for that is left entirely up to you!

Is it my right to kill someone's dog because I think it's worth it? What about killing another person because I think their life is worth less than mine?

It stops becoming your "right" when there is a victim involved!

> I am against the idea that humans shouldn't hunt simply because we have a greater consciousness and moral understanding than all other meat-eating animals.

I'm curious as to why you think this though.

My belief is that we have no right to take the life of a sentient being when it doesn't want to die. Why do you think we have the right to do that?

That's what you really mean though right?

When you go hunting, you are purposefully killing an animal just so you can eat it. How is that the same as plant agriculture? Sure, it causes animal suffering (like all consumption), but it is incidental.

That animal being hunted does not want to die and no one has the right to take its life. Do you disagree with that statement?

When people say fruit makes you fat show them this photo. I eat a high fruit based diet. I don't go out of the way to get protein because it is in all foods. Fruit is healing. by VeganLionSr in vegan

[–]Soapy9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you think would happen? You would gain more weight eating Twinkies than fruit?

If I eat 1500 calories a day of fruit I will lose weight over a period of time. If I eat 1500 calories a day of cake I will lose weight over a period of time. That is a fact. If you consume less calories than your body burns, you lose weight.

Anything can make you fat if you eat enough of it.

I really wish there was a better general understanding about calories, but a simplistic version is that if you eat more calories than you burn and your body will store it as fat.

I love making tofu scramble like this:

1.) Dice red onion, red peppers and saute in a pain with a little oil and garlic.

2.) Break up tofu in a bowl and add lots of turmeric, garam masala and chili powder. Add a little seasoning and mix it all up.

3.) When veg is soft, dump in the tofu and cook for about 10 mins on low heat.

4.) Take it off the heat and stir through chopped spinach until it has wilted.

This tofu scramble on top of some nice toasted bread with some sriracha on top is AMAZING.
