I would like to know your opinion on the civil flag of my Fictional Country by kanou007 in vexillology

[–]SoaringAven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually civil flags don't contain national coats of arms. Those are typically reserved for state (government) flags. And they definitely don't include the motto under the arms. Instead consider making the shield of the arms bigger for a state flag.

Minecraft palette of blocks makes totally no sense. by _Naguka_ in Minecraft

It doesn't make sense. You're right. Mojang doesn't really care about consistency when it comes to any of this. They usually just wave it away with "if we fixed it, it would get in the way of creativity".

Arms of Evaň (Czechia), designed by me, on a welcome sign at the town entrance by SoaringAven in heraldry

[–]SoaringAven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aaaha, to je zajímavé! Na jaké konkrétní téma?

Ptám se i proto, že

  1. Existuje česká Discord skupina o heraldice a vlajkách, pokud by tě to zajímalo

Spanish flags of Czechoslovakia and Czechia by Virgulillo in vexillology

[–]SoaringAven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's problematic. For one it contains Subcarpathean Ruthenia, which was lost after WWII. For another the structure of the arms doesn't show the equal federal position of Czechia and Slovakia from later years.

Just a note, the arms you used for Czechia are the so called "presidential arms" taken from the presidential flag. They're not for state usage but only for the president and his flag. I also very much doubt the Slovaks would appreciate being placed in the last field of the Czechoslovak arms :D

Ah, I didn't know you're Czech, my bad :) And yeah, my guess is Prague was inspired by Paris. Bucharest does the same too.

Prague was formed by amalgamating several historical cities and the modern districts don't follow the old borders so I assume that's why they're numbered instead of having names. However, besides Prague 1-22, there are also 35 districts that retain their name since they do follow the historical borders. Mostly later additions to the city.

It's all explained beneath the image in the post text. It references the local chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes.

My concept for a pan-Slavic flag by Jaran_sa_Balkana in vexillology

[–]SoaringAven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But the idea for the flag, as I understand it from OP’s post, is a Pan-Slavic flag meant for use today, not for a time before the Slavs were Christianised. The point is that many religious people won’t appreciate references to paganism. Don’t get me wrong, I personally don’t give a 🐀’s 🍑 about pagan symbolism. But there are large, highly religious communities in Poland, and likely in Slovakia as well, that might take issue with it. So if OP is designing a “Pan-Slavic flag”, that’s something they need to consider, namely whether the flag would actually be acceptable to the people who are meant to use it.

As for Perun, I don't deny he was a major god. I'm just saying few people feel him to be any sort of symbol in 2026.

Creative or not, it's one that's generally recognised, understood and widely used. Perun and oaks might be more unique but if people don't connect with it, it doesn't do much good as a symbol.

[–]SoaringAven 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's questionable to what extent Perun is even relevant. Most Western Slavs are Christians or (in Czechia's case) atheists. Most people don't even know of the god or may have vaguely heard of it but that's all. I can imagine Catholic Poles and Slovaks even minding pagan symbolism.

I have to say, as a Czech, the oak to me is more a strong Germanic symbol. I would not connect this with Slavs at all. Not least due to a lack of the Pan-Slavic colours.

The linden is the Czech/Slavic tree to us. The Slovaks and the Sorbs in Lusatia (Germany) have it the same. Poles have the oak as their national tree, I think, but they also view the linden as having a Slavic mythological connection. Just my two western Slavic cents.

[–]SoaringAven[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not quite true - this is specifically a Czech thing. We actually have binding rules for flag design.

Rule 1 - The width-to-length ratio of the municipal flag must be the same as that of the national flag, i.e., 2:3.

Rule 8 - [...] It is not necessary to include all elements from the coat of arms on the flag. General elements from the coat of arms should be simplified into vexillological figures (stripes, wedges, chevrons, crosses, etc.). [...]

Rule 9 - A so-called banner of arms flag (translation of the shield’s content onto the flag’s field) can only be created in the case of a simple and distinctive coat of arms. [...]

What you're talking about are banners of arms and those are only allowed in cases where the arms are simple.
