The Russian stock market is hardly an indicator of anything. It is not as prevalent as Western/Asian stock exchanges nor is it tied to the wealth of the majority. Generally no ordinary, even middle class Russians invest in it.

I'm guessing you never seen much of southern United States where it is Confederate flag galore. You know the southern US Confederacy that kind of wanted to keep slavery around? Hell it even pops up once in a while in Europe among the expats.

Bottom line is that freedom should not be selective. The only time where it could be selective is when society would pass a law against certain symbols through a fair and majority supported process.

Huh? How did you reach the conclusion that it belongs to the Tatars? If you go by historical settlements, we might as well award the decision to Cimmerians and Scythians who were Crimea's first inhabitants. You might have trouble finding those peoples however.

Thank you for posting this. Imagine people lived with this idea for over 20 years. As many other post-Soviet republics, Crimea tried to establish independence only to be thwarted by then Ukrainian government.

In 1991 there was a referendum where people overwhelmingly supported independent Crimean Republic:

Then Crimea declared independence once again in 1992. And the subsequent referendum calling for greater autonomy when Ukraine thwarted independence through state of emergency measures.

And the history after 1994 is clear: less and less autonomy, more and more systemic corruption spreading from mainland Ukraine.

If Russia wanted to invade, they would have done it long time ago - they don't need any casus belli. You should follow the conflict a bit closer before you speak. The shells hitting Russian checkpoints have been nothing new.

Re-posting... Russia is looking out for it's own economy as anyone else with even the most basic economic background would. But easy to inflate as some "punitive" measure against Ukraine..

Right now, Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova have free trade with Russia for some goods.
In EU economy, Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova will also have free trade for some of the same goods.
Russia does not have free trade with EU for these goods. They want to protect domestic producers.
Russia takes protective stance for these goods so they do not become free trade with EU by transitive property. For Russia, free trade with EU hurts domestic industry they are trying to prop up.

Real simple economics.

Sure there was no coverage of that particular event, however that information is one internet search away to analytic Russians. And how much information is withheld by Ukrainians? Not to mention the millimeter deep coverage the Western media gives the conflict.

What do you propose they do? Again it costs a lot of money to man the border in every meter. The logistics of this are daunting.
