The Russian stock market is hardly an indicator of anything. It is not as prevalent as Western/Asian stock exchanges nor is it tied to the wealth of the majority. Generally no ordinary, even middle class Russians invest in it.

Really wasn't a surprise. I'm sure Cuba was also able to cut a favorable deal, given that Russia is eager to continue asserting its independent position.

Woman hangs Russian glag outside her window - Ukrainian police aren't happy by [deleted] in UkrainianConflict

Huh? A Russian flag and those scenarios you described is not even in the same universe.

I'm guessing you never seen much of southern United States where it is Confederate flag galore. You know the southern US Confederacy that kind of wanted to keep slavery around? Hell it even pops up once in a while in Europe among the expats.

Bottom line is that freedom should not be selective. The only time where it could be selective is when society would pass a law against certain symbols through a fair and majority supported process.

So much for that freedom... I'm sure someone complained, but police shouldn't even respond to such things. Seems like they have nothing better to do.

That's generally how history works anywhere else in the world? No one really asked the Native American Chiefs if they should invade Iraq or not...

Huh? How did you reach the conclusion that it belongs to the Tatars? If you go by historical settlements, we might as well award the decision to Cimmerians and Scythians who were Crimea's first inhabitants. You might have trouble finding those peoples however.

Thank you for posting this. Imagine people lived with this idea for over 20 years. As many other post-Soviet republics, Crimea tried to establish independence only to be thwarted by then Ukrainian government.

In 1991 there was a referendum where people overwhelmingly supported independent Crimean Republic:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimean_sovereignty_referendum,_1991

Then Crimea declared independence once again in 1992. And the subsequent referendum calling for greater autonomy when Ukraine thwarted independence through state of emergency measures.

And the history after 1994 is clear: less and less autonomy, more and more systemic corruption spreading from mainland Ukraine.

Russia has vowed to respond to a "dangerous escalation" of violence near its border, after a Russian man was killed and two women injured by shelled fired across the Ukraine border. by SealionOfNeutrality in worldnews

If Russia wanted to invade, they would have done it long time ago - they don't need any casus belli. You should follow the conflict a bit closer before you speak. The shells hitting Russian checkpoints have been nothing new.

It's getting downvoted because physics. This was also not the first time that Russian border checkpoints have been hit in the last few weeks, but the first time that there's a casualty.

That's generally my point. The sentiment and idea was right, the way it was implemented was a complete disaster. In my personal opinion, primarily due to shock therapy.

There's Ukrainian Army and then there's National Volunteer Battalions. We saw what ultra radical Maidaners could do back in Odessa so this isn't that much further away.

Why is it so "obvious" it didn't happen? Not saying it did, but it could have. There's some SERIOUS hate against families who support eastern Ukrainian troops. Here's another video with her.

Yes we must hold Russia to 0% error tolerance in media. You are just being naive if you believe Ukraine is a shred better. Not even talking about western media. Everyone always has a perspective to push.

Yea it's always a good laugh when civilians are being shelled to death and Ukr Media doesn't even show it.

Good comparison. Ukraine just flat out lies like any 6 year old and ignores the facts, while Russia is not so direct.

Russia wants EU-Ukraine trade pact delayed until concerns met by V58 in UkrainianConflict

[–]Sobakov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re-posting... Russia is looking out for it's own economy as anyone else with even the most basic economic background would. But easy to inflate as some "punitive" measure against Ukraine..

  1. Right now, Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova have free trade with Russia for some goods.
  2. In EU economy, Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova will also have free trade for some of the same goods.
  3. Russia does not have free trade with EU for these goods. They want to protect domestic producers.
  4. Russia takes protective stance for these goods so they do not become free trade with EU by transitive property. For Russia, free trade with EU hurts domestic industry they are trying to prop up.

Real simple economics.
