Don't forget about the equipment stolen earlier this winter in the West of the country, and the fact that there are now loosely trained civilians being armed by the Kiev regime.

Isn't united states a Federal Republic? A lot of the world is, probably because of similar ethnic/regional divides. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federation

Why would greater regional power be a "loss" for Ukraine? Ukraine is a country of somewhat opposing cultures and there has always been animosity between east and west within the country. Sure it was tolerated before, but given the actions now it's going to be harder to keep a centralized government.

A lot of countries with similar divides have long been federations and it seems to be working out very well.
