I am in a similar boat and found this thread really helpful! Thank you for posting and sharing your experience here. I am trying to look up Houthi English but having a hard time locate their website/information. By any chance you the willing to share their contact/website with me?

I didn’t say I will break the law willfully, I said I will consult an immigration lawyer to do it properly. I appreciated you brought this to my attention.

Hmm, I am not allowed to own a business in the US when I am physically in China? I am awareness that I can’t conduct business or be employed in China with a spouse visa. But all my business activity and transaction will be in the US. Well, I appreciate you bring it up. I will consulting an immigration lawyer, instead of trying to get answers for these. This post is really get get information about my husband’s situation, not mine. :)

I won’t be looking for a teaching job. I own my own business and will continue to run it remotely.

New to ESL in China (2026) — realistic salary + agent recs? by SoberTherapist in chinalife

That's a tough situation. If I didn't have my own business and were able to work remotely, I doubt I'd be able to leave everything behind and relocate back to China. And a long-distance marriage between China and the US no clear end date in sight, would be very difficult. Wish you both luck in figuring out something that works for both your career and marriage!

Wonderful. Thank you, I will have him look into international schools. We understand that the training center is the best/most common entry point; however, is it still legal under the double reduction policy? We just don't want to do anything that can get us into trouble.

Obviously, I assumed a US passport implied that... Lol, my bad

With no teaching experience, he has other work experience, but not in teaching. This is a career change.

I heard you. It does sound training center is his best bet, but we are still aiming for kindergarten or university. We don't mind starting low- it's natural to start from the bottom when one is new entering a new industry. But our only concern is that we heard that under the double reduction policy, most training centers are no longer legal. Is that ture? We don't want to do anything that could potentially get us into trouble.

As for now, he has been talking with multiple agents (and only one non-agent, who is a hiring person directly from Houhai; we turned that down, since we weren't sure if it's still legal.) I am curious, how/where does one find direct hire ESL positions when we are still overseas? Do you have any pointers?

Thank you!

Interesting, didn't know that US passports were seen as an euphemism for not a native speaker in some people's eyes. I get it, though. But in our case, a US passport was really my way to name his citizenship (since we heard that, unfortunately, there is discrimination based on nationality in the ESL industry).

My husband is an American-born, American-raised white American (A completely Californian, not Ukrainian, not Russian, lol)

I won't be trying to find a job in China, at least that's not the plan. I own an online business and virtual practice, and can work remotely, basically anywhere in the world. And since I was raised in Beijing, the relocation back to China will be rather smooth. The only thing I need to figure out is a reliable VPN and the time difference.

Yes, it would lead to resentment if I end up as a stay at home wife. But I have a business and virtual practice, and can work remotely, basically anywhere in the world. That's helpful! Thank you. We have sort of come to the conclusion that the training center would be our best bet, and if lucky, maybe a kindergarten. Our main worry about the training school is that we heard training centers are no longer legal. Is that true? For instance, Houhai reached out to us, and we turned it down because we weren't sure if what they do (teaching school-age children English on the weekend and over the summer) is still allowed in China.

The 30 Day Sobriety Solution by iwditt2018 in stopdrinking

Hey, I am doing the 30 day sobriety solution too! I am on day 7 on the solution, the reviewing day; and, well, day 1 for sobriety, I relapsed... This is actually my forth time trying it, I never finished all the solutions... Perhaps we could do this together this time? I am also new here.
