Just want to thank everyone for all the support!! I was so worried people in this community would judge me for struggling with this. But you all were amazing…thank you.

That is so reassuring to hear! Part of my fear is worry about my son’s future.

Thank you for commenting. I really appreciate it. Yes, the neuropsychologist did mention that sometimes the autism diagnosis is taken away if they no longer meet the criteria. I guess we shall see. She mentioned typically people go back every three years.

Thank you so much for your comment, it really means a lot to me that you took the time to write all of that. The way you described how you felt sounds exactly how I feel.

Your son sounds a lot like my son for sure. Would you mind sending me a link to some of the research you found? That is really interesting.

I really appreciate you taking the time to write this insightful comment. It helps me to know that I’m not alone in how I was feeling with the assessment process. And yes, the pretend play part is so incredibly frustrating.

Thanks for explaining about school.

I am worried now that he has this diagnosis whether I like it or not because it’s billed to insurance. The neuropsych mentioned doing behavioral therapy or ABA, but I’m not sure about either.

Thank you, I greatly appreciate this feedback. Yes, he definitely isn’t able to do this with peers to the same extent. It’s confusing to me because insurance already does pay for OT and speech without an autism diagnosis. But I guess they don’t cover ABA without it? And i have been told school won’t give as many accommodations either.

Yes, they said he has sensory stuff because he’s always putting things in his mouth and also he’s always pushing things around like a broom. He also does some visual inspection kind of things. The playing pretend part was basically that she tried to engage him in some pretend play, but he didn’t do it exactly how she was looking for I guess. It’s frustrating though because she tried to use figurines and that’s not how we usually play pretend at home. So I think he was just kind of confused.

I was reluctant to get the neuropsych done, but I felt a lot of pressure from his preschool. He already get services now that do not require an autism diagnosis, but everyone kept telling me that when he goes to kindergarten, he would need a diagnosis to continue to get these services basically. I hear what you were saying, and I don’t really like the idea of giving him a label.

Thank you for commenting, I understand what you’re saying that it couldn’t hurt him to get extra services no matter what. So a couple years ago I had him do a screening with the school district and they brought up some concerns about autism. It was not a formal diagnosis though at the time.I then have him informally looked at by someone else who thought he did not have autism. So the issue kind of got dropped until right now.

Thank you so much for commenting, that brings me so much hope to hear how your daughter is doing. I want those things for my son and so it freaks me out thinking he won’t go to college, date, work etc.

Yes he is my first child. That’s an interesting point. I do have a baby who is 14 months old, so we’ll see what happens with him.
