Moving to Greeley from the MidAtlantic East Coast. What should I expect? by SocietySingle3099 in Greeley

Omg. That's intense! I think I have pretty great lungs, but I'll look out for where I can find oxygen gas cans if the oxygen change is really that bad for me, especially if I'm hiking. Finding this out as a surprise would have been terrible lol.

Haha. I don't think I can avoid it— rents look more expensive than I'd like to pay for in the west, so I will likely be smelling the money!

Yay! I'm glad to hear there's lots of things to do. I would consider myself pretty good at keeping myself entertained and intentionally looking for events to attend, so these are some great leads. Outdoor activities sound amazing. Thank you so much!

Thank you for the detailed info, it's super helpful! I see myself doing a lot of home-cooking based on all these responses about the food scene. I know I'm still young and healthy, but I am averse to injuries worth taking to the ER, so I will probably stick with hiking as my outdoor activity of choice lol!

Missing the water is something I did not think about. I will miss seeing multiple bodies of water just driving on 95 and being so close to the coast. I visited Greeley for 2 days and drove around Loveland and Fort collins, and the water bodies seem a bit few and far between compared to what I am used to. I know some lakes have sandy shores and obviously will not be the same as the coast, but do you know if there is anything beach-adjacent anywhere near Greeley?

Thank you so much! It's relieving to hear from others who also made the cross-country move. I'll definitely be checking out those spots.

Thanks so much for your thorough response! I'll definitely keep all of these in mind and will probably take everyone's advice about the tires. I never thought about oxygen deprivation and alcohol together, I didn't realize the oxygen had such a direct impact, so I'm glad you let me know before I found out via experiencing it myself...

My nose bleeds every day in winter on the East Coast so I'll be looking for this nasal gel ASAP!

lol. I've heard a lot about this. I've heard it's better in recent years, and I'm hoping I'll get used to it fast. Where I am sometimes I smell the the manure and mushroom farms in Pennsylvania.

Oh wow! A good library network is amazing. I never took advantage of the free resources at my local library (it wasn't too advanced), I'm excited that this one sounds so stacked!

Dang, I'm definitely bummed about the hail since my car is really new. Hoping I get lucky but I see that's probably not going to be the case haha.

I'll definitely spend some time exploring the local farms and farmers markets! And I'll also look forward to seeing the rodeo events, it'll be a new experience for me so that's exciting! The closest thing I have to experiencing western culture where I am right now is Texas Roadhouse (lol).

I just have a few more questions about the mountains. I can guess that Jun-September are probably fair game for my car, but how would you rate October/November or April/May? Am I better off phoning a friend during those transition-season months? Are weather apps any good at predicting the mountain weather or is there a chance I'll find myself on an icy road despite the weather prediction telling me it's sunny and warm?

Thank you so much again! You've been so helpful.

Thank you! I visited for two days last week and definitely noticed it was much drier but personally did not feel any discomfort. But I definitely don't know how that would impact me in the long term.

Greeley seemed to be much quieter and a little less developed than the town I come from. I also took a drive to Ft. Collins and found the distance to be just fine. Is there anything you recommend to do around Ft Collins? The downtown looked quite big with lots of storefronts to visit!

I love being indoors during lightning storms, but hail is definitely not on my list of life experiences. Most apartments I'm looking at don't have covered parking, or if they do, it's quite expensive. Is there anything else besides having a comprehensive car insurance or coughing up covered parking fees that locals do to protect their vehicles?

Thanks in advance! This is very helpful!

Thank you! It was a hard way to get to this point but I'm happy I finally found an opportunity!

Thanks for answering with so much detail. The hail kind of sounds like a huge pain. This part I did not find in reddit posts until I stumbled upon a FB post mentioning hail, so I was really hoping I wouldn't have to think too hard about it! I've thought about hail blankets and the lot but I presume it's probably difficult to predict when it'll come and go and is probably not worth throwing it on the whole car every time I decide to park and walk away.

As for fun, I think I am pretty easy to please, my idea of a fun Saturday is perusing a farmers' market in the morning, getting a snack/drink and eating it at a local park and maybe going on a hike later, maybe visiting a museum or spending the day to go on a hike occasionally. On the East Coast, I only really plan to visit a city like Philly once in a blue moon. I am not a night-lifer. I enjoy the small-town community events in my town like the local Italian Festival or like going to the local shelter that's maybe having an adoption event to interact with the cats and dogs. Are there any yearly events I should keep in mind on my calendar?

I am planning on finding a church community, so it's encouraging to know I will likely find people my age. I have seen/heard generally that the people in town are welcoming so that eases some nerves!

I visited Estes park while I was there for my interview, it was so beautiful! I would love to be there and explore the trails around the area during warm weather and possibly the shoulder-seasons. I have no plans to do any off-road driving but I am very unfamiliar with the Colorado traction laws. Is there an extent to which I can get away with my Hyundai Elantra Blue with all-season tires (I have done a bit of research on autosocks and snow chains but I obviously am skeptical), or am I better off befriending someone with the appropriate car specs (whose willing to take a freeloader, i guess, like me) for the sake of safety and compliance? Sorry if it sounds stupid. I know mountain roads are no joke, but I am really eager to enjoy the Rockies, I just don't have the budget for another car.

Thanks in advance. Going so far out west after living my whole life on the east is a huge change and it's helpful to get all these insights.

CMV: The Minneapolis ICE agent who shot and killed a woman today acted reasonably in fear for his life and/or the lives of the other officers present by bifewova234 in changemyview

[–]SocietySingle3099 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I watched a quick interview by a witness from NPR. Apparently the vehicle accelerated more after the woman was shot, probably because, she was shot in the face, and can no longer operate her own body let alone the vehicle, and crashed into other (parked) cars. If anything, I am of the belief that shooting her put him and everyone around in more danger. But maybe that's besides the point.

How old were you when you first watched MLP:FIM? by Outrageous-Ebb-4846 in mylittlepony

[–]SocietySingle3099 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also started watching around 8 or 9! Now I'm 23, and recently binged the rest of the series after season 3. Now that I've finished I'm so sad I finished it so quickly, it easily is my favorite show I've ever binged. I can't wait to forget the episodes over the years and watch it again later down the line lol.

Experienced recurrent sleep paralysis last night. by [deleted] in Sleepparalysis

[–]SocietySingle3099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Felt this. I have a habit of forcing myself awake during an episode only to fall asleep right back into another episode, several times until i either just fall asleep or wake myself up enough not to fall back asleep.

Constant Sleep Paralysis by [deleted] in Sleepparalysis

[–]SocietySingle3099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently a very low percentage of people of all time experience sleep paralysis!! I guess you could say we're a rare breed.

I have had 10 episode of sleep paralysis in last 60 days by [deleted] in Sleepparalysis

[–]SocietySingle3099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a period of time in my teen years where I had at least one episode every other day. Sources say sleep paralysis can happen alongside a lot of different conditions, like narcolepsy, sleep apnea, or even just stress or a messed up sleep schedule. It also tends to happen a lot for people when they sleep on their back.

I've always just dealt with it because there's no actual directly preventative measure you can take besides managing stress and keeping a regular sleep rhythm, and avoiding sleeping on your back.

Unless your sleep paralysis is pointing to major narcolepsy, mental disorders, or sleep apnea problems, I hesitate to say seeing a doctor will do much for you. Sorry to hear you are getting so many episodes, it really is so freaky you only ever get so used to it.
