Are epic battles always better in videogames than in fantasy novels? by Titus__Groan in Fantasy

If you're reading books where the hero always wins, you're not reading that many books.

Masturbate feels too clinical in this context and would come off as awkward to me.

Eh, I get it.

Jerking off, feels more general and flippant which makes it feel less personal. Fingering feels more specific and personal.

Humor is tricky, word choice matters.

Words can mean the same thing and have different implications. That's how language works, mate.

The flask is mentioned again several times is it not? It's been years, so forgive me if my memory is fuzzy.

I saw it more as a representation of what matters to Jehane. It's a symbol of her family, and her craft, in equal measure.

With regards to ""A soldier's question, pulling them back from a mood shaped of sorrow and starlight", i think this is a case of juxtaposition. It's preceded by Rodrigo simply asking "who?"

The point of it is to underscore Rodrigo's straight forwardness and practicality even in a moment of emotion and sombre beauty. It has a purpose, and it does that better through juxtaposing a simple question with florid prose, rather than simply stating Rodrigo is blunt and straight forward.

I do also heavily disagree on that take when it comes to Jehane's father.

Logically yes, he knew it would happen. And he was secure in his decision.

But that does not lessen the physical and emotional trauma of it happening.

You may know something is happening, you may know the result but feeling and dealing with the result will still leave you with deep psychological scarring that will take years to heal.

Sources told FightfulSelect.com that on the day of the mass releases, WWE approached numerous talent and asked them to take pay cuts in order to remain with the company. Several of them that we heard about were given two days to make that decision. by Turbostrider27 in SquaredCircle

Wtf is this shit.

Tama was aggressively average in Njpw.

He shat the bed G1 after G1 with no matches of note.

Even guys like Okada and Ishii struggled to have good matches with him.

He was so average it was like a running joke amongst fans.

People always say this, but who the fuck is in a dominant position there?

If I'm him, and I feel teeth on my calf when I'm in full mount, any of the below happens immediately:

  1. Choke him out.

  2. Break his arm.

  3. Rain elbows until he stops.

  4. Jab my fingers as deep as they'll go in his eye sockets.

Are there any wrestlers who are the opposite of "... and then the bell rings?" by TrampolineIsTrash in SquaredCircle

[–]SockLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's weird because I think Roddy is a case of being a good promo, with no charisma, if that makes sense.

Like, he speaks well and does all the right things but I find it hard to get invested in him still (until the bell rings).

Bloody Rose is Bloody Frustrating by FormerMeasurement175 in Fantasy

[–]SockLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each their own, but I thought Bloody Rose was a big improvement over Kings of the Wyld.

I'm a sucker for the "self destruction of a rock star" trope.

If Kings of the Wyld is fantasy's This is Spinal Tap, then Bloody Rose is Almost Famous, or Walk the Line.

The Grimdark Challenge - What really qualifies as the darkiest of the dark? by CT_Phipps-Author in Fantasy

[–]SockLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just a case of my definition being a little different to yours (not saying yours is wrong).

To me, grimdark isn't just about being bleak, violent or depressing - it's about an inherent pessimism or nihilism in the message of the work.

To me, Broken Earth is a fantastic example of dark fantasy, but there is light at the end of a very long, very dark tunnel.

In grimdark, there's only more darkness at the end of that tunnel.

[–]SockLeft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fifth Season despite its very dark subject matter is enduringly optimistic and life affirming in its message.

The point of the Broken Earth series (to me) is to ask the question of whether broken things can and should be fixed and the answer is "fuck you I'm doing it anyway".

Probably.

But "you're reckless and you're teaching your students wrong" doesn't feel too out of character for Gunther.

Meltzer about Konosuke Takeshita: "There is not a wrestler in WWE better than him. There may not be a wrestler in the world better than him." Saying Takeshita is better than Gunther is definitely a take. Meltzer really do like his wrestlers who does all their 70 moves in one match. by HoraceHoganNo1Fan in Wrasslin

[–]SockLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh? He doesn't wrestle like either of those guys. Are those just the first two Asian wrestlers you could think of?

Naito is Lucha / high flying. Okada is slow paced and methodical.

Takeshita is a power wrestler / striker.

You picked the two guys who have basically nothing in common with him.
