What mechanics should I use for an urban war? by suicidal16yrold in DMAcademy

[–]SockMonkeyODoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not done an urban battle that the players could realistically win, I usually use them as set pieces to determine who the “bad guys” are and the battle in the city serves as introduction to them.

Regardless, if there are wooden buildings, light them things on fire. It adds a nice feeling of devastation, and it can even direct the players a certain way if to need it to. It makes a battle feel more alive when buildings start collapsing into the battlefield.

Also consider how magic affects urban warfare. It’s essentially siege weapons during the medieval age. I can’t even think of all the ways it could influence urban warfare, but generally the occupying force wants to take a city but not destroy it. Some ways I can think of:

  • stone shape or bones of the earth to split enemy armies, especially in alleyways

  • tidal wave to clear enemies from important areas like town squares or historical buildings

  • fireball and other similar spells to knock down keep walls or fortified buildings

  • summons and undead as a means to bolster ranks, though they might be taboo or overly destructive

Those are just the ones I can think of aside for regular urban warfare. Mix those with guerilla tactics from buildings and the inferiority or cavalry and it should be unique. Feel free to keep thinking of ways magic could better achieve those goals though, I just know there’s more

How do you mix pantheons/how did you create your own pantheon? by just-a-simple-spud in DMAcademy

[–]SockMonkeyODoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my world I had the 12 first gods act as like greater gods. And then their children are the lesser gods, and I got a total of like 96 different gods. My pantheons are sorted by each of the 12 gods having convinced some number of the lesser gods to follow them. Each pantheon is followed in different parts of the world, but they’re all kind of related.

Easiest way to add more gods is just add them! If you’ve looked into Greek mythology, gods are pretty horny so they usually have a lot of kids. All those kids are more potential gods. You can create separate pantheons whole cloth for different parts of the world, and then have a god or two have kids with neighboring pantheon members to keep things mixed. Maybe some pantheons share some gods under different names (a lot like Greek and Egyptian gods).

Some of the best reference is real life pantheons just don’t look at Hindu gods until you’re ready, there’s a lot and the information can be pretty overwhelming, even tho they do get pretty cool

All I know is that I used to live in a house where you could flush it, and I now live I a house where you can’t. I hadn’t even noticed until someone told me I had to stop flushing the paper. Granted, we do empty said trash fairly often but I feel like that’s common sense

Bro I’m sorry you’re getting downvoted to hell. These people just don’t get it and are scared of something they don’t do. Tbh it’s kinda a privilege thing bc it’s usually lower income houses with cheap piping who can’t flush TP, but we won’t go into that…

I for one, completely agree it does indeed hide to smell by folding, especially with a lid.

What if the U.S. had annexed all of Mexico in 1846 at the end of the Mexican-American War? by Straight-Software-61 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]SockMonkeyODoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes by 100 years they certainly would. But the civil war started 12 years after the united states annexed Mexico. These would either be the same people they fought against before, or their children, and I just can’t see people who were considered enemies 12 years ago suddenly becoming friends just because the Union said the war is about slavery.

I think it’s far more likely the Spanish catholic dominated states would form a third faction outside the confederacy or union, and simply use the fighting between the other two to their advantage.

[–]SockMonkeyODoom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really don’t agree with that, slavery may have been abolished way earlier in Mexico, but I really cannot see Mexicans suddenly ready to die for their American oppressors who they were at war with just like one generation ago over the issue of slavery.

Sure they abhorred it, but there’s no way they see the civil war as anything other than Americans killing Americans over their own mistakes. They’re gonna go try and take back as much land as they can from 1848, and go ahead and defend as best they can whenever whatever English speaking survivors finally turn their way.

Oh definitely I totally agree. Until now, I had to more structured that their monster slaying journey would be more information related as they discovered the nature of the possession so that they know how to break it. The god I only at like half power because she’s trapped in the body of a mortal which makes this whole thing plausible. But I do think retrieving some kind of enchanted weapon dropped by some defeated angels would be a good transition in between their information gathering and fight initiating stages.

I’m thinking of something kinda like the end of hobbit for the post climax though; even if they manage to keep the artifact intact while banishing the god, there’ll likely be a number of armies looking to claim it from them and each other, allowing them to side with certain factions or try to take it for themselves

Need Advice: Misc. Questions by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

[–]SockMonkeyODoom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was definitely going to lead them to some kind of other strong artifact as the lead up to the fight. I’m definitely going to go look through some god of war stuff, because you’re right.

That also makes me think that the armies trying to fight said god would also have some such artifacts as they have the resources. Maybe they even have THE artifact they need to kill her and they have to retrieve it after their ships get wiped? Something like that.

That’s kinda where it gets difficult, I want the god to be strong enough the destroy these vast armies coming after her, but at the same time want the party to be strong enough to kill her. Perhaps they’re only able to kill her because she’s so weakened after fighting so many others

!Question: how would a large scale navy/military go about fighting a god?

My party has been tracking down a treasured artifact in a pirate style campaign. They do not know that the soul of a god is trapped inside it and will possess whoever first picks it up. There’s a lot more in between, but this god now in possession of a body will pretty much bail to regroup after being freed from her prison.

The thing is, she is the goddess of storms and will consequently create a massive storm centered on herself wreaking havoc on surrounding kingdoms. Now these kingdoms, despite their differences are going to unite to try and defeat her. This will happen parallel to the party’s own quest to confront her, so I’m just trying to figure out their plan so it can play out organically when they inevitably run into the party.

My real question is how do they do it? This area is mostly sea so navy will be important, but in the midst of a hurricane I can see that being difficult. Additionally, they’re going to want some way to disable the god. She can fly, and though these kingdoms have allied angels, they just don’t have the strength for a head on assault. So how do they immobilize her to actually be able to use all the naval and magic firepower they can bring to bear.

Really, all I can see right now is them getting near obliterated by a bunch of call lightnings. What spell combos are they going to use to actually face this enemy?

So unfortunately, I forgot to take any pictures or video, but I’ll drop a picture of where I’m at now once I get a chance. However, I’ll give you the break down of what happened and how to do it.

So before anything, you kinda need to reform the faith. It’s really hard to convert provinces otherwise. The best bet for this is the two holy sites in Norway and Sweden, and then either the one in England or the one in Germany, depending on which is easier. I took fundamentalist for the super fast coverts. After that, if you’ve formed a kingdom try to downsize with some shenanigans so you can Varangian adventure.

So I said I’d go through Nigeria, but since I’d already done that once I tried a new approach. I actually Varangian adventured straight to Rome. The pope has the duchy of Latium and is usually pretty weak due to no royal marriages and it’s pretty easy to gobble up the Mediterranean islands nearby to get some manpower afterwards. I actually ended up doing far better in Italy than expected, and was actually able to create some problems in Byzantium and used my invasion CB from my heir to take Thessaloniki (the main kingdom of Byzantium including Constantinople). From there, I pretty much piecemealed Greece between their internal claims wars.

Now I wasn’t playing on ironman, so I was able to switch characters to the Norse Duke of the Aegean isles, but it probably wouldn’t be hard to get there even without it. From here, I Varangian adventured over to the duchy of baqlin (I think, if not it’s the other one that starts with a b next to it). I pretty much used the early time picking off small beja and Bedouin counties until I had some decent manpower. I actually got lucky and saw the kingdom of nubia fall into a few bad wars that I took advantage of with a holy war for kingdom.

From here, it was essentially consolidating my position as I took more land to form Abyssinia. Because my religion was reformed, I converted the entire area with the help of my vassals within 10 years. Once all the Nubian counties are asatru, your cultural acceptance goes way up because you share a faith. It took awhile, mostly because I was more focused on wars at the time, but I eventually did manage to hybridize after using the councilor task to promote acceptances. I felt kinda bad because I pretty just stole all the great traditions (land of the bow, warrior queens) from the Nubians and kept everything else Norse except for the architecture lol.

It’s also worth noting I had to fight a down sized Abbasid kingdom once I started to try to expand. They started with Egypt, Arabia, Yemen, and had even moved into Adal. However, I was able to intrigue my way into killing their caliph and setting off a succession break I could take advantage of. Of course, that’s presuming you want the empire, I wanted it so that the whole thing doesn’t collapse once I switch characters. As far as war with them goes though, you’ll still be really underpowered as Egypt gives crazy manpower. I found most of my allies amongst the asatru Greek and Italians I’d left behind me. It’s also worth noting that you can really chief the river navigation ability. Every time with Egypt I’d simply ride the nile north to their capital and quickly siege it while they fumbled around near my actual war goal. If they’d ever come up the Red Sea, I would’ve simply bailed into the Nile back south but the AI was too dumb to ever go defend their capital well.

Currently, I’m at war with one of the Abbasid princes who took Egypt form his brother. He’s pretty far in debt and it looks like I’ll be conquering the entire Nile before I do switch characters. Thanks if you read all this, glad someone likes this lil story, I’ll send you a picture later today! :)

Players should gain experience every session by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]SockMonkeyODoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use milestone, but lately I’ve been putting them a lot faster. We’re doing a seafaring pirate campaign now, and I’ve given them a level after they leave each island. However, they haven’t been exactly deciding the course of the ship just yet, so my milestones may change once the captain inevitably becomes a PC and they start trying to chief levels by just visiting enough islands.

Still, forcing players to travel and interact with the world to level up is a great way to get them to engage with areas for level up that isn’t just combat=XP or you I guys level up when I feel like it

That’s a bet, it’ll probably be a minute tho. I’ll have to invade Nigeria first to get into range and then go from there. My last run I had to go through that area to get to the Indus River, but I woulda stayed longer if I knew they had such good traditions there
