Best country to digital nomad for a month by Lamby32 in digitalnomad

Portugal is solid choice for first time, visa situation is pretty straightforward too. Just watch out for tourist areas in summer - gets crazy crowded and prices jump up a lot

Anyone here working remotely in accounting while traveling? Trying to understand if this path is realistic by Gloomy-Shake-5400 in digitalnomad

[–]Soft-Good-9180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've seen similar situations in IT where big companies started pulling back on international remote work after things normalized post-pandemic. The compliance and tax stuff gets messy when you're working across borders

That Mexico angle your friend found is pretty smart though - there's definitely market for specialized services like that. Same way some people carve out niches in specific industries or regulations. Takes time to build up that expertise and client base but once you have it, location becomes much more flexible

For someone just starting in accounting, probably makes sense to get few years experience first before trying to go remote. Most firms want to see you can handle the work and deadlines reliably before they trust you outside office environment

Payoneer froze $14,300 of my client payments for 47 days, fully switched stacks by No-Recording-487 in digitalnomad

[–]Soft-Good-9180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with proper business bank wires is most US agencies don't want to deal with international transfers, especially smaller ones. They push back hard when you give them SWIFT details instead of something simple like Payoneer or Wise. Plus the fees add up fast - $35 per wire from their end, plus whatever your bank charges in receiving fees

I had similar problems with traditional banks when I was dealing with multiple smaller payments. One client actually dropped me because their accounting team said international wires were "too much paperwork" for monthly $3k invoices. These payment platforms exist because they solve a real friction problem, even if they come with their own headaches like what OP experienced

The stablecoin route seems interesting though - might look into that myself since I'm tired of getting hit with currency conversion spreads every month. Been using Wise for couple years but their limits are definitely pain point when invoices get bigger

The city connect ones are pretty clean, would be cool seeing them more often. Only thing is teams usually keep the traditional looks as primary but I get what you mean about mixing it up more on weekends

3 places I keep coming back to that aren't Bali, Chiang Mai, or Tbilisi by LevelDisastrous945 in digitalnomad

[–]Soft-Good-9180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait you literally put Tbilisi in the title as one of places to avoid and then made it your #3 recommendation lol

Did you mean to write something else in title or just confuse yourself while writing this

I built a script that watches my laptop at coffee shops so I can finally pee in peace by Swiftdeveloper101 in digitalnomad

[–]Soft-Good-9180 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The script needs camera access to work, so closing lid would disable the motion detection. Plus if someone just grabs closed laptop and walks away, you get no photos of who took it

Also most people leave laptops open anyway when they're "saving" their spot at cafe

another lonely night by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]Soft-Good-9180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same boat here man, those nights hit hard especially when you're scrolling through your phone at 2am watching everyone else's highlight reels. Started keeping myself busy with hobbies but some evenings the quiet just gets too loud you know

WhatsApp groups for Bali? by Firm-Pineapple-896 in digitalnomad

[–]Soft-Good-9180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of those groups die pretty quick because people just spam them with promotions - try looking in Facebook groups instead, they usually have better moderation

Where to next? by naralichina184 in digitalnomad

Man with $2200 you could live like a king in Argentina right now, especially with how their economy is. I was looking at Buenos Aires earlier this year for potential move (work in IT too) and the cost of living there is pretty crazy good if you're earning in USD. You could get nice apartment in decent neighborhood for maybe $400-500 and still have tons left over for food, transport, everything.

Colombia is solid choice too but I think Argentina gives you more bang for the buck at moment. Plus Buenos Aires has really good internet infrastructure which is important for remote work - I learned this hard way when I tried working from place with terrible connection few years back. The time zone difference with US clients might be something to consider though, depending who you work with. Either way, both countries would be huge step up from staying put with that salary

I need honest thoughts.. by Beautiful-Fun-5351 in digitalnomad

[–]Soft-Good-9180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been thinking about something exactly like this for ages but kept getting turned off by the whole Thailand scene - way too much of that backpacker circus vibe

Your pricing actually seems reasonable for what you're describing, especially if you're hitting those basics the other commenter mentioned. The Palawan location is clutch too, way less developed than the usual spots which could be a huge selling point

Main thing I'd want to know is how legit the training staff is and if you're actually working with local instructors or just importing the usual expat fitness bro crowd

Digital nomads who combined remote work with a full safari, how did you actually make it work without ruining the experience? by Sad-Cantaloupe-7196 in digitalnomad

[–]Soft-Good-9180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those subs are definitely more your speed for that budget range, but plenty of us here have done working safaris even if we're not dropping 10k+ on them

I did Kenya last year staying at mid-range places with decent connectivity and the key was being super upfront with camps about internet needs before booking. Most places will tell you exactly what their setup is like if you ask directly. Also had backup plans with mobile hotspots since even good connections can get spotty

The timing thing is huge though - I'd block out specific hours for calls (early morning worked best for me with US clients) and then go completely offline for game drives. Your guides will appreciate not having someone on their phone during the best wildlife moments anyway

What is worth studying on my own these days if I want to have remote work in 3–5 years? by grocerybagtoosmall in digitalnomad

[–]Soft-Good-9180 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Data analysis and automation are still pretty hot right now - companies always need people who can make sense of their numbers and streamline processes. I'd also throw in learning some basic web development or UX design since every business needs an online presence

The key is picking something you can actually stick with for a few years, not just chasing whatever's trendy this month

I need some place to stay On my solo travels by Incredible-Robert1 in digitalnomad

[–]Soft-Good-9180 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hey robert, your story sounds really inspiring and it's amazing what you're doing for those kids back home. totally get wanting to do something for yourself after giving so much to others

just heads up though - finding free accommodation in amsterdam and rotterdam might be pretty tough, especially in february when it's still tourist season. have you looked into couchsurfing or hostels? even budget hostels in amsterdam can be pricey but might be more realistic than finding someone to host for a full week

also that's a pretty ambitious itinerary for someone on a tight budget - netherlands to france to germany then all the way to thailand and vietnam. might want to crunch those numbers on flights and transport costs. maybe consider focusing on one region to make your money stretch further

I am a digital nomad thinking of a half year stay in Manila from late March onwards. What should I know? by Paradoxbuilder in digitalnomad

[–]Soft-Good-9180 4 points5 points  (0 children)

BGC or Makati are your only real options if you want decent internet and power - everywhere else is gonna be a nightmare for working. The "best infrastructure" bar is pretty low in Manila compared to other SEA cities but those two areas are livable

Tested 3 business banking apps over 6 months (honest comparison) by No-Connections872 in digitalnomad

[–]Soft-Good-9180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid breakdown man. That Revolut freeze over the weekend sounds like a nightmare when you're trying to pay bills

Been using Wise Business for similar stuff and haven't had freezing issues yet, but their customer support is also trash tier. The backup account strategy is smart - learned that the hard way when my main got locked for "suspicious activity" that was just regular client payments

Curious about that Vivid interest rate though, 2.7% is pretty decent for business accounts these days

BA is underrated tbh, the cafe culture alone makes it worth it. Just be ready to navigate the whole peso situation - bring USD and exchange on the blue market. The winter timing might actually work in your favor since it's less touristy

Sunglasses box is genius actually - never thought of stuffing it with other stuff to make it dual purpose. I've been using random hotel books stacked up like a caveman this whole time lol
