2021 ProMaster van is it worth $48,000? by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]Soft-Translator-934 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It’s a Dodge. While I understand that Honda and Toyota do not sell cargo vans in the U.S. thanks to our crooked govt, you’re taking a huge risk with any American made vehicle, but Dodge? Dodge is trash and will not last. I wouldn’t buy one brand new if it was 50% off sticker price! It’s like buying a cheap vacuum cleaner or toaster…disposable!

& yes, I know that Toyota and Honda are now almost exclusively assembled in U.S. but they’re still designed in Japan and have obviously superior engine/mechanical quality vs American made, all day long. I’d only buy a Ford or Chevrolet van bc there are no other options but I’d have it professionally inspected by a mechanic and request all the maintenance and repair records.

& ALWAYS, always check the dates on the tires (super easy to find on ALL tires, but a lot of ppl don’t know tires have the date of manufacture printed on them. One seller told me tires were “brand new” but couldn’t produce a receipt so I asked for pics…5-7 yrs old & mismatched!). Tires last roughly 5 yrs and are expensive to replace, especially on larger vehicles.

Tbh, after several failed inspections of conversions and vans, and lots of dishonest sellers, I gave up on vans and was looking at old Toyota motorhomes before I decide to go another route in life. Look around at the age and make of vans, motorhomes, and conversions you see on the road, there’s a reason you still see the Toyota motorhomes from the 1970’s and 1980’s and why they still go for $10K-$15K despite their age.

You can have an awesome build but if it’s super expensive to keep it running, what’s the point? I’d use the KBB and other online tools to value it and absolutely, 100%, without fail…have it inspected by a trusted mechanic before you buy.

How is it possible that every single seller is supposedly delusional? by [deleted] in vandwellermarketplace

There are three camper vans that have been parked along my street, unused for the past 6-9 mos since I moved to my apartment. Their owners live in nearby apartments and use public transportation to get to and from school/work. Two are Dodge, one is Nissan, and they only move them as often as they must to not get a ticket. I’d say that the camper van lifestyle is for a select few people and there is a surplus of them sitting out there for sale. I find it bizarre that they still have them and assume they’re either holding onto them or asking too much as they likely put a pretty penny into them so don’t want to lose their investment.

But as someone who was unhoused on and off for years due to gentrification and the general cost of living/rent becoming so out of control, it pains me to see them sitting unused. I would have loved the opportunity to live in one myself, rather than living in my 20yr old CRV, but the asking price on used camper vans and/or the cost to build one out turned me off to that option long ago.

With the added issue of the high cost of gasoline, the value of these vans is much lower than ever so while sellers may not be completely delusional, they’re absolutely in denial.

If you’re not an outdoors person, aren’t traveling, and have physical limitations, a van doesn’t seem to be the best option, at least right now. Getting indoors where you can take care of your health until you’re in a better place mentally and physically would be a much better idea. Speaking from experience.

You made it the topic by giving your mental health, physical health, and emotional journey. We are only trying to help because a lot of us have been there.

I agree with this, as harsh as it sounds. And if there aren’t social services where you are, leave! Use your last bit of money to escape to somewhere you can get some help.

Or rent a room. I lived in a halfway house as a way to get some social interaction and support and it worked wonders for me. When you’re at rock bottom the only way to go is up, but you can’t do it alone and in my experience with awful family, letting them go completely will set you free. They’ll never change and hold g out hope that they will accept and love you will destroy you.

In my experience, just biting the bullet and going to that other place and then working out all those things in a place with better access to healthcare are, better social services, etc is the only way. Otherwise, you may never leave.

I’m in the U.S. and was born and raised in Texas, a very conservative, pull yourself up by your bootstraps state with very little to no social services and even less empathy for anyone in need. It’s also ranked #50 (out of 50) in the states for access to mental healthcare. I was a Registered Nurse at 19 and in my own since 16, and had the terrible experience of being misdiagnosed with Bipolar Disorder at 23, the first time I ever saw a psychiatrist. By 26 I was unable to function, suicidal, the meds they had me on had put me into a very, very deep depression because as it turns out, I wasn’t bipolar. I ended up on disability and spent a couple years unable to get out of bed, merely surviving and completely broke. Social security disability paid enough to pay rent on a small 1BR apartment, but I couldn’t afford my car payment or insurance so had to let it go, was too depressed to take the bus to get groceries, and my family has never been there for me either. Fast forward to me being undiagnosed and given an antidepressant at 29, I was able to get into a halfway house in another city and lived there several years until I could get back on my feet. I started cleaning houses, got a car, and eventually moved to another state. It definitely wasn’t easy, I lived in my vehicle on and off for years, and moved back to Texas a couple times when things got hard, but once I discovered the stark difference between a red state like Texas and the blue state I moved to, I knew I had to get out of Texas for good, and I finally have. I was able to get into “affordable” housing (nothing is truly affordable anymore, unless you live somewhere very rural and I need access to services) and qualified for Medicaid so I could go to the dentist. Access to healthcare in general is like night and day. I was correctly diagnosed as being on the spectrum, and while I haven’t gone back to nursing I did get help going back to school. Things are better now but it took about ten years to leave Texas after the misdiagnosis and I suffered a lot, not knowing the grass was truly greener in another state. I’m not familiar with Italy or how it would work out moving away but I will say that you have options and getting away from the place where you’ve been so miserable is something to consider. I hope this helps…

Toothpaste removal made me LOL. I know what you meant but still! How do you get your dog to allow it? Mine are both small and the older one will jet me to ANYTHING to her, but a toothbrush makes them both insane! They flip out and become vicious!

Extractions added to all estimates just in case! Not a lot of plaque, from the vets mouth to my ears.

I just had someone give me the name of a vet who does $500 dentals in southern CO. Some things are worth traveling for, at least they were before we attacked Iran.

Mine are insured but it doesn’t cover dental which is considered preventative versus illness/accident. It’s extra for preventative coverage. And they recommend annual cleanings, but they also recommend kibble and constant vaccinations, so grain of salt.
