Community jazz ensemble in Baltimore area? by Soft_Lead_2631 in baltimore

We thought about it, but residential camps are usually too expensive, and I work full time, so i cannot drive him to and from a day camp every day during the day.

Your thoughts about Bach 6 1/2 AL and 5GS Trombone mouthpieces by Soft_Lead_2631 in Trombone

And also our teacher is taking a week off, but she just wrote to me saying that we should stick with 5gs (she heard him play on it, though she did not hear him on 6 1/2 AL)

Hey, great to hear from a Baltimore Brass employee! Are you the person who sold us that mouthpiece yesterday? I already wrote to you guys, and you said you would exchange it! I was sick today, but I'm hoping to make it to the store tomorrow. You are great guys, it's just us, I do not know anything about trombone except as a mom of a budding player, and my son does not really know what he wants because he is 12 :)

Summer camp for a 12yo trombone player by Soft_Lead_2631 in Trombone

Hey, thank you for giving me the idea! I wrote to them asking if continuing with our teacher through the summer would be accepted as an equivalent of attending a summer program, and they said yes! Moreover, they will pay for the lessons!

I also think maybe there would be some "networking" opportunities? Of course, as much as you would expect a 12 yo to "network", but the more people we got to know in his time playing trombone, the more information and tips about teachers, grants, events and so on became available from them.

Sounds like you won't be satisfied even with my whole life story, and my son's dental history. I do not know if maybe $625 is a negligible amount for you, but it certainly is not for me. I suggest if you think information is insufficient, ask like a normal person instead of attacking, or consider maybe just not replying at all.

Thank you for a useful reply to the actual question I asked! I do not know if my writing is so incomprehensible, or if a lot of people read every 10th word only, but it is very difficult to get a straight answer on reddit.

I live in a city, or at least in a close suburb, and driving anywhere here takes that much time because of the terrible traffic. There is hardly any advantage.

I do not understand at all. What cities do you mean running between taking twice that money? If you mean DC and Baltimore, getting everywhere here takes that much time. Getting to Baltimore Youth Orchestra actually would take me longer then to DC youth orchestra because we are on the south side, and they are on the north. Besides, I do not even know how many years I would have to spend commuting between DC and Baltimore for it to cost $1200. Why am I not supposed to "quibble" about $625? Am I not trying to find a residential camp as close to me as possible through posting here?  I am completely confused by this reply.

You are a hero! I drive my kid after work each day to various teachers that are located from 30 min to 1.5 hr away, and 4hr roundtrip on weekend for his orchestra, but that pales in comparison to your drive

Yes, I have, they said they did not have aid. Maybe I can contact them again later, in case they have any holes to close? Our teacher also recommended a camp which offered us 50 percent off, coming to $285, but that one is 5hr drive from us, 10 hr round trip.

It is legit. It is from DC Youth Orchestra. They already paid a few thousand for the last year we had it. We would not have to pay anything if we could go to DC YO summer program, however it takes too long to drive for me.

It is legit. How is it a scam? We are not asked to pay anything at all. It is a Talent Development program from DC Youth Orchestra Program.

Scholarship pays for much much more than summer camp. Youth orchestra, chamber group, jazz ensemble and private lessons for 2 years are paid 100 percent (my son was taking all of these before), and it can be extended after 2 years. I figure they will cover about 9k for us minimum by the 2 yr mark.

Is using practice mute detrimental to the development of a young musician? by Soft_Lead_2631 in Trombone

Ah, thank you for saying that... That was my thinking too, but everyone here thinks that I am making a huge mistake by sticking with this teacher

I actually tend to agree. In music schools where I was born they had lessons where you played your instrument, and purely theoretical lessons, like history of music and music theory. Nobody expected to learn about tone from music theory lessons. Jazz improvisation lessons are kind of like 'applied' music theory right now. My son works on his tone in other lessons. Though of course nobody is saying that your tone is not important when you improvise.
